This was fantastic! What a treat to have you doing videos like these in the off-season. I knew about Woj's past with LeBron & I assumed he got the James Harden trade wrong because Simmons' agent Rich Paul meddled behind the scenes and Windy got the scoop instead. But this angle is one I did not think of and quite frankly should have. It makes perfect sense for Woj to protect Sean Marks from the bad press of a botched Big 3 experiment.

A really well-done video, and one that underlines what I think is an increasing issue in journalism - the rise of the relationship "journalist". Basically the person who pretends to be super-critical and analytical, but clearly has gained most of their access and insight through relationships they will not betray at any cost. Besides Woj, there is Stephen A., Wilbon, etc. that just can't realize how ridiculous they look for criticizing all the people they don't have relationships with, but immediately jumping to the defense of the people they do. For this reason I have really just come to loathe the "breaking news" people (Shams, Woj, Schefter, etc.) because you realize they are just mouthpieces being used by the people they think are sources. I think this is where Zach Lowe has really come to shine. I listen to him all the time, but never get even the slightest sense that he has biases and people he is protecting.
@yajeel
@yajeel 2 жыл бұрын
I would agree with you on Zach Lowe aside from anything to do against the Celtics or about the Lakers.

i believe its also referred to as 'Access Journalism'. All that matters is access which skews their objectivity and principles.
@michaelheim1149
@michaelheim1149 2 жыл бұрын
@@njengakim I've definitely heard it called that as well, but in my mind that actually sounds more nefarious than what I think happens in most cases. For instance, with Mike Wilbon, he is open that he considers Magic Johnson a friend and has worked with him for many years. So - when the stories came out of Magic using bullying and intimidation against Lakers employees when he was the GM, Wilbon and Stephen A immediately did a fluff piece interview with him that basically defended their friend and called into question the honesty of the other employees. In that case, I actually don't think Wilbon was thinking that he needed to protect his source so he could continue to stay on the inside - I honestly think he just saw people going after his friend an jumped in to help out. Overall, however, I think the result is largely the same. I'm not going to believe a single thing or a shred of analysis that Wilbon has to say about Magic. He's shown that he is incapable of being objective, so I just know that going into any time I hear him talk. The most hilarious was the flip he did on Daryl Morey. Longtime PTI listeners will remember how Wilbon used to absolutely slam Morey as bringing analytics into basketball. Then he met Morey, hung out, and considers him a friend (he has said all of this). The part that is hilarious is that he now continues to rail on analytics, but will absolutely defend Morey to the death.

@@yajeel well he is a Boston fan. Despite that he gushes about the Celtics, I don't this his reporting is entirely inaccurate when it comes to the Lakers. The Lakers were a dumpster fire last year and were 11-11 when Lebron and AD played together, so let's not act like they were a championship tier team that got hobbled by injuries. That roster is hot garbage.
@fenixchief7
@fenixchief7 2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelheim1149 case in point man. You think Wilbon isn't that kind of guy so you're saying it couldn't possibly be as shady as all that in regards to him. So even in the face of evidence that he is two-faced, you choose to speak highly of him and in his defense. Its literally the same thing as Woj and Dumars. Woj wrote a bunch of shit showing the Pistons in a favorable light because Dumars was a close working partner.

Woj is basically the PR rep for nba teams. Currently he’s getting paid behind the scenes to do PR for the nets. On the flip side shams is the mouthpiece for the players. Shams will never criticize the players. Woj will never criticize the organization. Case in point the most recent shams report about Ben Simmons where he denied Ben Simmons leaving the group chat with the nets. We don’t know if that’s true or not. Shams refuting the report doesn’t mean much to me anymore considering he never holds the players accountable

Not really the case. Woj gets into bed with certain organizations and players, all dependent on who will give him the scoop. However, when the Suns didn't extend Ayton he gave super favorable reporting to Ayton and criticized the Suns.

You could easily just view that as a credibility issue. Whether its deserved or not, people see their names as credible and are more likely to buy in when they see them. Its also entirely plausible that these reporters were merely given access to sources through Schefter or Woj, who oversee vast, league wide contact networks. If Woj or Schefter is going on air, they're not likely gonna be fielding calls or emails from their sources, are they? I have a much larger issue that bias flavors the reports rather than who passes the reports along. I wouldn't take the word of these reporters as fact when we're calling into question the journalistic integrity of people who they're supposedly writing stories for, would you? Hell of a catch 22.

In my humble opinion I really don't care about the ESPN and other big sources, i understand that they have a business to run, but they talk so much BS and only care about their ratings. I love to hear from people who really care about the sport

San Antonio mafia?! This is derogatory for a very competent group of people. Those guys worked their butts off to reach the positions they are in now. Including Marks. Who wouldn´t try to accomodate DeAndre if that was what KD wanted? Who wouldn´t trade for James Harden? Lebron forced GMs hands throughout all of his career, and that's how it is. Woj or not aside, the portrayal of Marks and all of the SA guys in this video is laughable.
@ThorfinnMacbeth
@ThorfinnMacbeth 2 жыл бұрын
wait, whats wrong with the portrayal? surely one slightly questionable word by a guy for whom english is a second language does not a portrayal make? (Mafia is not really an English word but the idea of calling a close knit group the "x,y,z mafia" is a pretty common sort of phrasing in contemporary American (thus KZbin) English)

@@ThorfinnMacbeth english is my second language too, and I still don´t like the way it was used. Maybe mob would be the better word. Not mafia. Especially when you´re referring to a greatly respected group of people in the NBA for the incredible work they've done while creating the most winning culture. Anyway, I like the channel even though I don't agree with the Sean Marks assessment.

Woj is a brand for ESPN. Since he didn't release the info first, they wanted time to pass because they definitely never want woj to be second. They'll even tell people like Windy not to release info before woj

Great work!!!! You're really onto something here and I hope hoops channels keep pulling this thread. Woj isn't a bad guy at all but he def has a crafted persona developed by ESPN to be their "trade insider". It's not that different from a WWF wrestler who is given a character to play by management.

Are you really arguing the Sean Marks is a bad GM? Any GM in the NBA would have traded Jarret Allen and picks for Harden without hesitation. And also any GM would have signed Deandre Jordan if it meant you’re also getting Kyrie and KD in free agency. Your argument alone on Sean Marks made you lose credibility in this video.

Honestly, I think Woj bombs are getting too extreme nowadays and are bordering unethical. It sours relationship between the team, players and the fans. Trade excitement also dies down because Woj keeps on giving out these leaks before a legit signing happens. I think there should be a limit. Woj is literally paprazzi but for sports media.

this was a 10 minute video? damn it felt short. Super well made--good job! an intriguing and fresh topic. Learned things about Woj I didn't know of before--just thought he had good insight into things didn't know it was through networks and tactics like this. Also didn't know NBA did a sneaky investigation into this to find out who was leaking the info. Coool!!
