Elandré Schwartz performs ‘Tougher Than The Rest’ by Bruce Springsteen

Elandré Schwartz is a 21-year-old singer from Despatch, a small town in the Eastern Cape and he recently landed a record deal with the help of Bok Radio when they saw a video of him online singing “Tougher than the rest” by Bruce Springsteen and Josh Turner’s “Your man”. They are currently working on an album that will be released soon. Elandré’s debut album ‘Kleindorp-dromer’ is now out.

I am writing from Northern California. Just stumbled upon this by complete chance. Just wanted to say I was totally blown away by the truth and commitment in this young man's singing. In American country and western circles, they say someone sings "the bottom out of a song" when he or she really touches the emotional core of something and puts it all out there for the audience. I think he achieves exactly that.

I have represented most new artists "pro bono" to help them retain their copyright interests in their songs. This song is covered by EVERYONE and his is one of the very best I have heard. What the fluff did I just watch .. and hear?! Right, that language! I didn’t even know that existed! I’ve never heard anything that confusing before! 😵‍💫 I seriously can’t figure out how that language came to life in the first place! Usually you can hear parts of other languages (neighboring countries often have similarities in their languages) which can be a clue to where in the world this language belongs… Well there’s always an exception, and my guess couldn’t have been more wrong 😂 And like that wasn’t mind blowing enough, the dude let’s out this voice of an old man, with so much depth and life in it and sings so effortlessly a song that can only be sung right by the man who made it.. until now! The language you're referring to is Afrikaans. Its very similar to Dutch as the Afrikaans were Dutch settlers. It was my grandmother's language and it's very close to to my heart.

I like Elandré's version far better than Bruce's version, much more feeling. But I prefer the more underplayed version sung by the late Theuns Jordaan. And, many Afrikaners are tri-lingual. Listen on KZbin to Dozi singing Wale Fela.
