***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out new videos every week! We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.
We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites.

Thank you, Kevin, for lots of details. Forwarding to my son (50 yrs) so he'll be prepared for fall plantings. He started getting an interest in gardening while recuperating from a serious auto accident. He got a mini greenhouse and will start plants early, 2025. Heat this summer (105°-107°) did cost some losses, but glad he's trying. ATLANTA SUBURBS...

We're down here in southwest Georgia. We have been having 95-100 degree days. And then really rainey days. We have twenty tomato plants. I've managed to get 4 gallon bags in the freezer for canning in a couple months. When i got home from work yesterday, every tomato plant was brown and dead. All i can do is pull them out and restart them. Our peach tree had over a hundred peaches on it 9ne day and the next day, every peach was on the ground.

I'm now planting, with a purpose. Make a list of the veggies that you buy/eat all of the time. Then check the extension office, if you don't know when they grow in you area- OR if you can grow them. Next, check the rainbow- red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple ( beets come in the purple list- not red 😆). Growing veggies in each of the colors, is a fantastic way to get those vitamins and minerals into you, and your family. Do the same for fruits- this is a good time of the year to dive into that fruit planting. Stark Brothers is the BEST place to do this, and that is because you must put in your zip-code, and they will NOT sell you anything that won't grow in your area. God's design is the best place to start with our foods. If you ever took a deep dive, you will find that the foods that grow well in your area, and the time they grow, lines up to take care of your nutritional needs for that time of the year. In the south, we get vitamin C through oranges in the winter, its a short season. Winter is a short season. Up north, cabbage is loaded with vitamin C, and imagine that, it grows very well in the N and is STOREABLE, in the N. A quick note on cabbage- if you cook it, fully, it will kill the vitamins, so, look for recipes that lightly cook it, or find recipes to eat it raw. Fermented saukraut is one heck of a good food too- NOT canned! Make it fresh, and keep it keeps in the fridge for( I think 3 months) We are fearfully and wonderfully made! Time to plant with a purpose. It's FUN! 😀😀

It's still 110° here in Bakersfield CA, but I'm replanting green beans, cucumbers, and zucchini, and maybe more tomatoes this weekend. It's usually hot here until November. In August and September, I'll plant peas, carrots, brassicas, chard. October, I'll plant cilantro, parsley, dill, and onions, and then garlic a little later in the year. I'm not always motivated to garden the end of summer and early fall, but putting up shade cloth over my garden has been a game changer. Last year I had it up, but only at 6 ft high and it was cooler, but stuffy under it. This year it's up at 8' to 10 feet high. That has really helped. The breezes can get in better.

I took full advantage of the outdoors to start my Fall/Winter crops in trays! We have horrible battles with chipmunks, birds and squirrels when direct sowing. I only have a pop-up type greenhouse, but it worked perfectly atvkeeping the soil warm and safely away from critters! And I loved not having to harden off anything... I would just take them out and set on the patio so they could experience the breeze to strengthen their stems. Also - germination was so guick! Mostbrhings emerged in 2 to 3 days... and NO ELECTRICITY was used! I am tempted to skip 50% of my indoor sowing next year and plan out my Spring garden differently. I think that will bell ease me into the growing season in a more relaxed manner. I normally feel stressed or have anxiety about planting out because of our unstable weather (Eastern Iowa - 5B) Thanks for this video! It helps reassure my decision.

I’m wondering if you find the black landscape weed blocking material makes the garden area even hotter? I have used it too for a large area in my backyard for grow bags, GreenStalk planter towers and galvanized raised beds like yours. I mulched natural wood chips, but after two years, weeds and grass grows in the wood chips. I’m planning on recovering with just the fabric, but wondered if it just makes the garden hotter. I live in a similar climate to yours, in fact my neighbor is from Ava, MO, and will be there this week. I’m in Independence, MO Zone 6b

If you use woven fabric it does not. We’ve done experiments where we use a thermometer to test the soil temperature and the soil is cooler UNDER the fabric than it is outside of the fabric.

They were plants that we got from a local Amish greenhouse. Here is a video from when we planted them. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eHzGhoSDap18jas
