For me (as a home assistant user) I think a small usb power brick powering the esp32 and a normal smart switch on the power supply is the way to go. Automation - when WLED is on, smart switch is on. Now we’re not messing with mains electricity and still saving the most power.

The only issue is that wLED Integration in HA will complain when the controller is off. Not the end of the world, but if you look at your dashboards as much as me that is a nogo.

@@sirgoodenough65 I think Adam was saying the separate power brick for the controller which will never be turned off, so HA won't have a problem with the controller being unavailable. The smart switch would have the LED power supply plugged in.

Another option is an old PC Power supply, as long as it is ATX. An ATX Power supply can supply a standby 5V line, which runs your ESP device, but low power consumption. The ESP can trigger the power on signal directly as the power on wire just needs to be pulled to ground, no significant current draw from it, to turn on the power supply. I've run my LED's with wLED like this for a long time and it is probably more power efficient than a separate power supply as an ATX PSU draws very little in standby, but can crank up the amps when fully powered up.

There is a potential minor problem with the first solution. If the fan is running, it needs to cool the PS components. Regularly switching off the PS when the fan is running allows HOT components to remain hot as the fan is switched off. This heat may destroy or shorten the lifespan of internal PS components. (Just a thought) 🙂

This was actually the first thing I researched once I got my dig uno. I was very happy thst there's a pin available to do that and it's documented by Quindor with both options (interrupt just output to the LED strip - vs - separate power supplies and stopping the AC). I went with this separate power supply option and very happy I did so. Nice that you made a video about it.

This has definitely come in handy. The only issue I hit, was not having another convenient spot for the 5 volt power, without adding another outlet outside along with a larger waterproof case. I ended up running a poe 5v splitter to give me the ethernet connection and the 5volt power for this all in one, just tucked it into the existing abs box. Worked perfectly

Excellent video my 3,000+ bulb LED strip lights will sit unused 99% of the time and using a relay to shut off power to the power supply is a great idea.

Just did this. Easy to get 5v from a USB adapter and cable. Just chop one end off. Works great, just make sure you get a relay with a 5v coil.

Multi-relay user mode and save more $$$ and power on any ESP8266 or ESP32 board. Works like a charm! For TV ambient light, use the TV usb feedback to feed into another multi -relay mode (inverted pin mode)

If I use a 5v power supply with constant power to these three terminals. And then have my 12v power supply hooked up to a wall switch to power off. Would this allow me to keep the board running and then power of leds via the switch?

I believe cycling power also causes stress. When a component heats and cools the causes stress/wear. Some things actually perform well running at a constant load. Think highway miles vs city miles on a car.

Upon trying this out I find my only 5v relay board is a piece of crap that only triggers when pulled low. It has a jumper, but the jumper only disables the relay coil completely, rather than switch it to a high level input. In the video DrZzs shows leaving the GPIO 15 set on invert. Un-checking the Invert allows my relay to function.

Wouldn't it be better to use a USB adapter to power the esp32 and have your power supply connected to a smart outlet? I guess it would be about the same concept, haha, That's how I have a few of mine set up so when I'm not running a holiday show I can still incorporate WLED with my home automation

let me know how it goes. The first problem you may run into is the sonoff may only have 1mb of memory. Make sure you use one of the memory limited versions of WLED.

like always..quality job,thank you,i have the same wiring setup but with a big concern if something goes wrong to the relay circuit could feed back Ac current to Dc side and fry our boards,some of the relay modules have VCC,JDVcc pins so we cant use an external power for the relay,so that said if we want to protect the boards will need 3 power supplies one for the leds one for the digquad and another for the relay

I use a tp link outlet plug that completely turns off my power supply conveniently programed and controlled with their iPhone app. They can be purchased on sale for $5 each. I have 13 to control 13 power supplies on my light show, Cheers!

I have the 5v external supply to control the external relay to turn on and of the 12v power supply. How do i set the timer to turn on the relay at 5pm and turn off the 5v supply at 10pm?

Cool! Relay kill the whole power from transformer. What the maximum length and awg size between esp32 and relay module? Cos I like to keep all transformers in same location near switchboard.. ideal having relays module with each transformers and esp32 elsewhere closer with leds strips. Kept getting flashing leds due Signal data on long run cable, even add level shifter and 2.5mm2 and 4mm2 size cable! Again what the maximum length and size between level shifter to leds strips (WS2812B)?

It looks like you're passing main power through the board still. Can I run a separate 5v psu to the board, and run 5v directly to the lights, with only the data line running from the diguno to the lights? So I'm not running the main power lines through the dig uno?

I think this is a good idea for those of us using 12volt LEDs. A small 5v psu to the Dig-uno/ESP32 with our bigger 12v psu straight to the LEDs. Am I missing anything that would cause a problem here?

Great info. The MEAN WELL RS-15-5 5V 3Amp looks like a good small power supply for a hardwire installation. Now, if am am using two sets of wires from my 60A power supply, to the two sets of terminals on the Dig-Quad, does that mean I need two relays? Thanks!

Love this idea! Question: For Method #1, the DigQuad has that green block with the 3rd terminal being a data output to run a wire to the data input of the relay. Where do you connect a relay wire on the DigUno? Do you run a wire from the Q1 pin on the DigUno to the relay? Thanks!

Hey DrZzs I didn’t see this question in the comments… Is there a way to delay the relay from turning off the power supply? The reason I ask is that if the power supply fan is running, it means that the PSU is still hot! And turning the power off while it is trying to cool down may also shorten the life of the power supply. David M

I get what you're saying but there's ultimately from the power supply's perspective there's no difference with the relay solution here, vs simply pulling the inbound power plug out of the wall. Either way the power is cut off and it will passively dissipate the remaining heat. If this is a concern maybe some active cooling like a fan or case fans in the enclosure on a separate power supply may be needed to keep moving air around the PSU?

@@_tim I agree with your response if you simply pulled the power plug out of the wall. However, that’s not what happens when you turn off your lights via the WLED app. Doing that only stops the lights and the power supply continues to run (hence the subject of this video). My point is that pulling the plug from the wall -and- leaving the PSU running BOTH may reduce the longevity of the psu. Which is why I suggested a delay of the psu shutdown. However… That being said. The power supply will likely outlive the lights, controllers, wires, connectors, etc. The lights and controllers because of obsolescence. And the rest due to corrosion. So I guess that answers my own question.. -lol Good day @Tim 👋

Using a USB HID relay with win10, is it possible to control the lights of the Wled such that when relay is on the LEDs are white and when relay is off the LEDs are displaying preset color? How to do that with the Uno?

Thanks Dr Z for your great explanation. I would like to control a couple of relays for dumb led static displays that could be turned on and off with Xlights and sequenced. I have tried looking it up and have not had any luck.

hmmm, I don't know how xlights does that, but I'd expect there is a way. Have you tried asking our Pixelheads in discord? discord.com/invite/drzzs in the LED channel. Those dudes know everything.

Hello, I used the same AC setup and relay but looks like my relay always get stuck closed ( Maybe relay contacts welding together?) but doesn't get stuck if I use DC. Have you ever encounterd this issue? Thanks.

@@DrZzs No worries, it seems like there is a huge inrush current and melts my relays when I turn the power supply on. This might be because I'm using a cheap ebay power supply haha. Just gonna stick to dc side relay for now. Thanks forthe tutorial :D

This definitely makes a lot of sense on a DigUno with a single power supply (switching power to the LEDs rather than the DigUno). I have two questions. If you have multiple strips fed from a DigQuad, is the relay is closed if any/all of them are on, and if it only opens back up when the last strip is turned off? I could see that working well when controlling the primary power supply with a relay. Also, is the power saving as drastic on 5v LEDs like WS2812 or SK6812? We know that 12v WS2815s are inefficient because they use resistors to get the voltage down for each LED. Thanks!

Let me jump in here. Yes, WLED intelligently turns on/off the relay. So if you have multiple strips/ports/segments once 1 goes on, it'll turn on the PSU and only once all are off, it'll turn it off. Regarding power draw, all LEDs generally use about the same idle current, ws2815 isn't too much less efficient in this case (uses internal regulator) vs ws2811 resistor or regulated version.

What size 5V power supply (Watts) is required just to power the DigQuad relay circuit and the power relay? I plan to power the LEDs with 12V power from the power supply?

Almost nothing. 0.5 amp would be enough

Why not just hard wire your power supply to a light switch and just turn off the switch? I love playing with relays but they just seem unnecessary in this application? My other question is; I run 90w uncooled power supplies on my lighting and never need to run a fan to cool them off. Why is your supply needing such cooling when running

The benefit of the relay is that it turns on and off through the WLED UI. You certainly can use a light switch, you’d just have to switch in on/off manually. I would be curious about the power use of those power supplies you’re using when the LEDs are idle. Fan or no fan, it likely would benefit from being powered down completely when it isn’t required.

@@DrZzs Thanks for your reply. I have the undercabinet lighting tied to a wall switch so when it is off there should be zero power to the ss. transformer. I am enjoying your exploration of amps in the led world. I come from a pretty basic electric education of amps equaling heat and I have a hard time wrapping my head around these 18ga wires handling any amount of current..:) My guess is it's overall "power" that the primary concern due to the low voltages? I'll keep watching, I'm sure you've already explained it somewhere..:)

These are fine. I'm in the middle of putting together a controller box with a dig-quad and a similar PS. The first thing that came to my mind was a photoelectric switch that would turn on or off the AC power to the whole panel. Since it's a system that I only want to run at night I figure that is the simplest solution (other than pulling the plug). I'm probably also going to add a timer to shut it off after 4 hours and a physical switch to bypass the PE switch so I can make it run during the day for setup/troubleshooting purposes. Any reason you can see why my KISS system would be a problem?

Yes, but it can be a small phone charger type thing, only powers the dig and the relay, not the lights.

but my digquad get power from the 12v meanwell psu. what im trying to understand is will i need 2 ac powers one for my 12v and one for my 5v. i just dont see where the5v psu is being powered from in the video so it makes it a bit confusing still trying to wrap my head around it all.

Question: I'm planning on hooking up some WS2815 12V LED strips to a bare metal power supply like the one in this video, but the power supply will in turn be connected to a Meross smart plug that I can turn off and on using Alexa. So if I were to turn the smart plug off, that would cut off power to anything "downstream"--including the power supply that supplies power to the LED strips. Do I still need a relay in this situation?

Yes, this is solution avoids needing a relay. The thing with this solution is it depowers the controller, so you're rebooting it every time. The question then is what does is WLED's default behavior on boot up? By default I think when you boot up the controller it leaves the lights off. However, I think you can program the controller so that WLED will run an effect on boot as default. I think the only downside is you can only set one effect (at a time) that you want at power on, it won't do a "run last effect" or anything dynamic like that. But that limitation aside, the solution does work.

What about just using the sonoff basic? And set it to hold the button to stay on (instead of toggling when pressed) at least you have got a nice cover for it and you might be able to share the 5v of the sonoff as well. Or would that not work, since the 5v of the sonoff is basically always on? As a bonus you might be able to create a switch in homeassistant that you can toggle at will :)

After failing to get WLED working on a v1 Basic, I'm going to use a d1 mini for WLED and power it using 5v from the Sonoff. To get automatic switching of the 5v power supply that WLED on the Sonoff would've given me, I'm thinking to just use the relay pin from the d1 mini to gpio14 on the sonoff as it already has power and a common ground.

The sonoff basic has a mains switch. It will work if you use the sonoff basic to power the LED Controllers supply, but it will not accept the wLED firmware and actually work. Several reasons. The power supply is just big enough to power the relay and the esp. Hardware connections to the relay and button are not configurable. etc.. etc.

What does the PSU supply to the sonoff? is it too little to supply an extra ESP?

@@Jeroen_a Yes, it barely runs the 8285 that is there now. This leads to the instability of that device. I use a bunch of them. You start to run into trouble when you add a few I2C devices even.

@@sirgoodenough65 I ment running the controller just from the 5v line of the sonoff. Not flashing it with wled or so. But since it supplies too little this cannot be done. Then 2 separate (or one with multiple relays) Sonoff will do too. You can then completely shut down both or force reboot the controller just by toggling. Just remember too automate the switches.

no. if you connect power to the green terminals, that power is routed to the esp32. No jumpers or anything else you have to deal with. it's automatic.

The fuse is in the way (on purpose) as it is not designed to be run that way. Check out Quinled.info for details.

Is the draw when off only on the data line, and if so, could the relay be placed on the data line?

The draw is on the power lines of the LEDs, the data line is actually still alive with the main power supply turned off and the board still online.

I added a relay to my dig uno. It is working great but my WLED is now defaulting the LED settings back to 30 LEDs. Anyone have this issue?

That's fantastic. I think i'd do as others have suggested and skip the relay component for some HA smarts and a smart plug, but this is fantastic!

@DrZzs if my power supply's voltage fluctuates between 11v & 16v, would I need a buck convert or does the Dig-Uno have a built in converter to output a stable 12v signal?

that's a great question. I don't think it regulates the voltage that goes out to the pixels. Why so much variability from the power supply? The pixels will probably be fine with the fluctuation for a while. The low end might cause some dimming or data problems at the ends of the line, and the high end may cause some extra heat in the pixels and may lead to some failure at some point. Maybe the thing to do is get a more stable power supply if you can.

In your case forget the relay and just use the Sonoff to turn everything on and off.

on the AC side, very very little. 1/2 amp on the DC side is all it needs to provide.

by puck do you mean power supply? The esp32 takes very little power. A 0.5 amp 5v phone charger would be enough.

Neat trick, now if only I can find a relay board with a higher current capacity than 10A; my power supply draws upwards of 15A of input power when the lighting system is at full throttle.

it draws 15amps of 240v? the 5v/9v/12v side is a controller, it just powers the control circuitry for the relay. Its rates to 10 amp 250vac, 10amps 125vac. If you're using an power transformer to turn mains voltage into 5v or 12v, and you have the relay turning off the mains supply to that transformer, then running say 12v 10amp transformer will only be consuming 120watts of power. for a 240v mains supply that is half an amp, or a bit more depending on the transformer efficiency. You would be pulling closer to 10 amps if you had say a 1700watt 4 slot toaster that would be pulling 1700/240 = 7 Amps or mains voltage. So unless your lighting system is a space laser visible from the moon i think you should be okay. You would have to be running 2400watt of led power supplies, which would be the equivalent 200Amps of 12V worth of led transformers to all on one relay to technically exceed the relays limit.

true, but you also shut down the WLED UI. By using the relay you can just shut down the power supply for the LEDs while keeping the WLED controller powered up and connected to the network. There are plenty of people who do it the way you describe and are very happy with it. Thanks!

Justin, I'm just revisiting this again after a few years. We used to say that we had to always connect all the grounds. Does having a separate 5V supply for the board mess with common grounds? I'd try it myself but my test string is flaking out so I can't tell if the results are from the string or different grounds. They are plugged into the same receptacle box, so they are connected on the AC side.

@@DrZzs It worked. Unfortunately running a lightening (Halloween) simulation on my SK6812 RGBW apparently damaged the strip (300 pixels, 60/M 5V) but it will run fine after cutting out 1 bad pixel and reducing the power to

@@DrZzs I'm joining this conversation quite late but just to be clear you advise connecting all grounds (5v and 12v) even though they are different voltages and therefore coming from different power supplies? I was planning on using POE to get a 5v supply to my DigUno and then a dedicated 12v supply for the LEDs not run through the Uno at all.

Dr.Zzs… I’m Running 600 ws2811 12v leds thru a Dig-Uno. How can I keep 5v on the ESP32 and relay the AC of my 12v power supply off? Or can I only make option #2 work with the 12v ?

I was worried about using one 5vdc and also one 12vdc power supply. I found the answer on Quindor's page. Just use the (always -on) 5vdc to the aux power input pins (see 10:15 in the video) and run the 12vdc power thru the DigUno's screw terminal inputs as usual. I hope it works...

Relays are the only way to go and have used them in every set of wled controllers I have. BUT in the 1st example your calculations fail to consider the wattage from the 2nd 5v supply. The total wattage cannot be 0w. Its 0w from the 12v supply PLUS the wattage from the 5v supply. Sorry to be picky. 😊

I really didn't think anyone would care enough to notice that. I was wrong ;p I did show the power draw of just the Quad without any LEDs connected. It was 1.45 watts (0:57) The 5v source I used wasn't running off the Sonoff plug.

@@DrZzs In an adjacent room when someone turned the ceiling fan off it would turn a few LEDs on my DigUno (ver2). I set up a relay on the power side of the LEDs. Found out that I had to set the GPIO relay to 5 rather than 15. Now it works perfect!! Thanks for your tutorials!!

The only issue is that wLED Integration in HA will complain when the controller is off. Not the end of the world, but if you look at your dashboards as much as me that is a nogo.

I added vscode via docker compose, any help configuring ssh connection would be greatly appreciated... Terminal in vscode shows me as user abc@2f69326953... HELP!!!

any phone charger will do. The relay needs very little power. 0.5 amp or bigger is sufficient.
