I’m new to setting up LED’s. Just did Chris’ Closet Light Setup for my son. Amazing ! I’m wanting to put LED’s on his 6 Floating Shelves in his room and also around the small wall the shelves are on. Do I just connect everything parallel ? Are there separate channels on this controller ? Would I be able to have the LED’s going around wall separate from the LED’s that are on each shelf ? Lastly, I guess since the LED’s on the shelf are only 24”, whatever animation is being run, it’ll just travel the 24” on each shelf and repeat ? Thanks. Trying to learn. I'll have to grab one of these, but in most cases with my projects I am working with raw power from the wall or a transformer not plugging it into a power brick with PD. Now for portable projects running on battery banks, yep this is perfect. It says it supports direct power from a power source, but I just dont see a quick and easy way to do it with a harness or terminal. So if I am soldering, I may as well just do what I have been doing and build my own. Or for the same cost the QuinLED Dig Uno does have the connections for power without soldering.

Hi Chris. Another great video! I need a controller for WLED house number project by my front door. I have a 65W PD USB-C that will be powering this. I will be using 5-7 feet max of 12V strip. What is the most I can set for the maximum current mA with this controller and the power source I am using?
@MagWLED3 ай бұрын
Most 65W USB-C PD adapters should support 3A @ 12V, so 3000 mA (if it's a good quality adapter). The current calculation in WLED is just an estimate, though, and the actual current draw depends on the LED strip. If you want to find the absolute max, set the strip to all white at max brightness and keep bumping up the current limiter until you start seeing the brightness drop again - this will happen when the adapter has reached its maximum current and the voltage starts dropping instead. Some adapters support beyond 3A, but the fuse will trip if you go much beyond that.

12V is max, if you want it powered via the USB-C port (you could alternatively power the strips from an external power supply with a common ground, of course, but then I'd probably recommend one of the QuinLEDs). It's possible to design a controller that e.g does 20V USB-C PD and then boosts it to 24V, but at that point you'll need an expensive power supply anyway, so it might be better to just go with a regular, non USB-C, option.

I have a few questions: What is the benefit to using 12V LEDs? Just lower current at the same power level? Did your Power Bank run USB-C Power Delivery as well? Or does the controller have a buck-boost to power the 12V strips?
@MagWLED3 ай бұрын
Outside the context of USB-C, the biggest benefit is less voltage drop and thus longer runs without power injection (you can get power supplies that can provide lots of amps at 5V). USC-C power adapters are current limited to 3-5A, so by going 12V you also get the advantages of longer runs _and_ significantly more power.

Was it a WLED project or just bare LEDs? I would "guess" that an ESP32 connected to WiFi might draw enough current to keep many Powerbanks active even when the LEDs are off, but yes - it can sometimes be a problem. There are a few that have a special "low power mode" where they stay on when just a low amount of current is drawn - probably made for SmartWatches, Headphone and such. I think Xiaomi and Samsung had some in the past, but I guess there are more brands offering such a feature as well. But often these features are hidden in the manual and require to be manually turned on by pressing the powerbank button multiple times or holding it or such. And one big downside can be that some still turn of after a few hours. I guess for very low power projects it's still the best to use a minimalistic DIY Powerbank which has the needed buck/boost converter, charging protections and such, but don't turn itself off. I've tried years ago to make a little USB Adapter with a timer and power resistor to "waste" some energy on purpose every x seconds to keep a normal powerbank active. It worked, but was almost impossible to universally "optimize" it for best effciency. Some powerbanks required a current draw of >70mA every 2 Minutes to stay active, others >100mA every 14 seconds.
@ChrisMaherDIY3 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! Battery packs are tricky and I have yet to find a perfect solution. These work great while the lights are on but if you turn the lights off, because of the relay switch which is designed to save power on standby, it causes battery packs to reboot, thus turning the lights back on automatically after 10 seconds to a minute depending on the battery pack. You can disable the relay switch and this solves the problem but then while off, the lights will still be drawing power and draining the power supply. Lol long winded reply but this controller is perfect for battery packs but I would only really use them for projects where I plug the lights into the battery pack when I want to use them and when I'm done, i would unplug the lights from the battery pack. Perfect for people wanting to deck out a bike with leds, but not perfect for where you are wanting to put the power supply in a place not accessible and where you will need to turn the lights on and off a bunch of times. Hope that makes sense!

@@ModernRemade Another workaround for powerbanks with more than one socket can sometimes be to insert a second device into the other socket that "wastes" some energy. A small light, fan or whatever. It's not a beautiful solution, but sometimes it can be a decent workaround. But that might also depend on the power bank. Some keep all ports active if one port draws enough current while others shut down ports individually.

Chris I have several types of WLED controllers - some GLEDOPTO , an ericity, and a couple of others (chips) - ALL of them have issues where they come on by themselves. Have you seen this?

Is this just a normal ESP32? In other words, can you flash it with other sketches not WLED? Thanks for the videos.

Yes, an ESP32-C3 that can be flashed via the USB port.

Ironically I make my own RGBW controller but using the ESP32-S3 or C6. Note the 3A limit for current requires that, for most applications, the LED's should be powered from a separate 5V/12V supply sharing a common ground. A 10mA limit (for a 300 light chain) may be sufficient for testing / development but for deployment I find this limit unsatisfactory. My latest project, for Christmas trees, involves deploying the lights randomly across the tree then using a connected camera to map the light positions (on the tree) into memory - in this way I can generate a coordinated light display animation regardless of LED positioning. I also repurposed an LED TV screen (gutted the hardware and light panel) and substituted LED strings (with multiple controllers of course). Used for Halloween and Christmas primarily but also to amuse the kids (who at age 8 and 10 are better programmers than I am!)

How about these with a 24v or 48v strip? I keep killing WLED ESP32 boards, I think the power back feeds. I need something with complete safety isolation. Maybe QUIN led?
@MagWLED3 ай бұрын
Although you can power MagWLED-1 via an external power supply just fine, it's designed for USB-C up to 12V. There is no barrel connector and you'd need external, fusing and it does not tolerate voltages above 12V. The QuinLED boards are excellent choices if you want external power and higher voltages.

Interesting but limited to 36W @ 12v? Wouldn't cut it for my needs. Still cool for small projects and those who don't like soldering.

Hey Chris, how hot does your MagWLED run? I bought one from Amazon and plugged it in and it gets really hot. I could not get it working. Sending it back. EDIT… as I was writing this I got distracted. I checked my email and the seller is refunding my payment and also sending out a replacement at no charge. Pretty awesome.

An additional I2S microphone would be cool for some effects, but I can feel why the creator would skip that for production in larger quantities. I did some of my own boards in the last years and it was quite annoying how often the good microphones got out of stock or had to be changed to another model. Beside the additional costs for good ones.
@MagWLED3 ай бұрын
Yes, that was the main reason for not including one. There are break-out pins for I2S / I2C, but that requires soldering.

I wish someone offered a no solder solution for a direct audio in. So I could feed sound from the TV, receiver or other audio output devices directly into the light effects of WLED.

Looking for a micro controller to drive a variable voltage output at up to 3A. (1-12v) I want to be able to program it to read a temperature sensor, and vary the output based on a table of data. Would this be able to do that?
@MagWLED16 күн бұрын
It depends on what you mean by variable voltage. The output voltage can be configured to be 5 or 12V, but it will be constant (DC), not alternating (AC). Both are up to 3A, assuming your power source supports it.

I found a ESP32 expansion board that allows 5v or 5.5-16v via a 5521 barrel jack for a couple bucks - but doesn't have the PD 5v/12v switch or common LED strip connector like your $30 version.
