I Absolutely LOVED the impression!! Hilarious !!! Brilliant !! I did have a question regarding insulation on your sleeping bag. I am pretty sure that is a down bag you have to save weight. However would you recommend synthetic insulation if the conditions were Wet and cold?? Or do you think down can handle most conditions nowadays with the DWR treatments??

P.S. I wish I knew these tips when I went on a trip when I was younger. Hiked High Point in NJ on a June summer day. It was about 85deg F most of the day. Around 7pm it went down to about 73deg F. Went to bed around 9:30-10pm in a summer synthetic bag ON THE Ground. That’s right. No pads or tent at ALL. (Temp was 69deg F). Figured it would be Ok. Woke up at 2am Shivering Uncontrollably. Temps dipped down in about three hours to 19deg F. Layer of frost over Everything. Luckily I had extra clothes and a winter hat I brought. Will Never do that again.

Ear plugs make the sleep so much nicer. I carry the cheap foam plugs and they are part of my standard kit. I grew up in the east and the crickets get so loud its hard to sleep. I use them all the time here in Colorado for the wind and you can't forget the coyotes. Camp foot comfort - some extra warm socks and sandals that don't fit between your toes. The boots can be quite cold and restricting for warmth. Decaf tea for. warm up so you can sleep. Some though sharing this morning

I enjoy placing the food and bag cozy (coozy sp?) against my chest and stomach in my jacket while it’s rehydrating. I don’t think my body steals too much of the warmth from the bag, but it’s a good trick to maximize the warmth from a hot meal on a cold trip. Everyone should try it at least once.
@JiminiTrekАй бұрын
Just a few more, some of which you did, but didn't call out: pick a campsite that is a little more protected / less scenic. put the fly on the tent, if it's optional, especially if it's clear out. Heat up water for your towel bath. Wear the beanie to bed (actually helps me keep my earplugs in!) wear the puffy to bed or keep it handy to layer on top. Wear socks in your camp shoes. Wear (clean) socks to bed. Give down sleeping bags plenty of time to rise. Use a tool to get stiff bear cans open in the morning. Protect your water filter from freezing at night! Keep butane warm at night if you want that coffee on a truly freezing morning. Also tips that are just good for 'it's colder than i expected' which is more likely in the fall but can also happen in middle of summer.

I am not sure what watch you have, but I use a Garmin "Tempe" to determine how cold it got at night. I usually attach it to my hiking pole or guyline outside the tent, and it will show the min/max temperature over the last 24 hours when connected to a garmin watch. It's also less than 10g (making it a little lighter than the ThermoDrop for the gram weenies). Really helps with refining a sleep system as weather in the rocky mountains rarely seems to be consistent with the weather forecast.

@eric_hansonАй бұрын
Altitude is tricky and doesn't always affect your body the same way every time. Going from sea level to 7,500 in one go can definitely make your body sick especially if you compound it with dehydration and excessive effort. When going into high elevations, give your body time to adjust, don't have really aggressive days, hydrate with electrolytes.

To quickly and meaningfully add R-value inside your sleeping bag, sleep in long johns and your puff jacket, and a beanie. Use a n95 mask while you're at it which will keep your face warm, and completely minimize the condensation inside your tent, as most of that is a result of your breathing vapor.
@tbusterutubeАй бұрын
You probably already know this but instead of using the insulated bag for your food after you pour the hot water in it, try putting it under your coat or hoodie when it’s cold like that and then you have a great heater for your hands and body. It’s a multi purpose meal and gear all in one!😮

I thoroughly enjoy your content, and have watched Miranda and Rainer and quite a few others, but I've never done thru-hiking especially in these kinds of areas, but I've noticed a lack of fires in the US. Are there rules/regulations? Is it because a full tang knife and ferro-rod or a lighter or matches adds a few ounces? Although under the right circumstances the same thing/lighting a small fire for heat could be achieved with your propane stoves easily, so I just don't get it. Why no fires if no burn bans?
@SuperLogandogАй бұрын
It’s part of the “leave no trace” philosophy, taking wood from the area is detrimental and burning also has an impact. Cheers
@eric_hansonАй бұрын
I frequently backpack in sensitive environments. This is one of them. Trees grow so slowly above 11,000 feet that fires are banned here. I also just have found I like not managing a fire on most backpacking trips.
