reading other people's code (especially random internet spergs) can be very annoying and draining imo that's probably why she had a simple challenge with some pre-defined functions. Just having the challenge be "sorting" also leaves it open for a lot of creativity whereas something more complex and detailed may not maybe

I'd wasted an embarrassingly long time on this, so I'm glad you posted the video mergesort: I wrote this, and I'm not too proud of how long it took. I used distinct function names in another .py file, so that I could write tests for both submissions. Apparently I was an idiot when copying this to the submission file you provided. Oops cheatsort: That's not a for loop, that's an assignment using a generator function. I did not need to call the print function after every iteration, as there is only one "iteration". Since there are [1..N] unique numbers I can just produce a sorted array without any need to look at the input numbers, I only need to know N. I bet you this'll run faster than anything else, and yes, I do feel like a smartass. BTW I did write it, but it IS cheating. With that said, your input was pretty cheatable 😊 This was fun, thanks for the roast and the bonus content!

Thank you for the mention of tabs, something we all have a strong opinion on! Any way I look at it, that's what the tab button was invented for. And 4 spaces is the correct depth because 2 is barely visible (and you're not using 8 tabs or anything unless you're writing HTML...), 8 is just crazy (looking at Notepad...) and who the heck wouldn't use a 2^n number of spaces for their tabs?

Damn, if I knew about it sooner I might have written a sorting algorithm that only accepts Kanji as input (else it will print 分かりません🙇) and sorts those by amount of strokes used. Nihongosort or something like that, however I guess to truly deserve that name all Japanese writing systems should be respected. Maybe curviness of strokes should also be a factor in sorting but that depends a bit on font as well... HMMM.

I like your philosophy re Windows vs Linux. For me, it depends what Im using the computer for. All my server devices, and my media devices are all linux based, my main PC that I use for gaming etc, is Windows. I don't see it as a case of one being better than the other, they each have their strengths and weaknesses.

People who use single letter variables don't go to heaven.
@johndubchak

Question: Is a novel-inducing variable name (known as, cousin of carpel tunnel) truly "better" than a reasonably sized (much smaller) name? When I see looooooong variable names, it suggests to me, inexperience. That the developer cannot see context within the code. (Not being critical, just looking at the extremes and wondering about the middle-ground)
@gorak9000
@gorak9000 3 ай бұрын
The thing that's most frustrating about perl is it's so unreadable and annoying, but for super simple stuff, it's like 10x faster than python - that makes me so sad. It almost makes me as sad as pythons reason de etre is supposed to be "there's only one way to do things", when in reality there's always 10 ways to do things, and the least obvious way is actually the efficient way. I feel like coding in python for 9 years has made me a super sloppy, super lazy coder - I should've stuck to my guns and wrote all my stuff in c/c++. It's also super boring coding in python for 9 years - the only way I can feel anything now is to tear apart raw firmware binaries in Ghidra and work backwards to manually modify the binaries, re flash the roms, and see my changes actually working!
@AlexHerlan
@AlexHerlan Ай бұрын
At this point single letter variable names are certainly out of vogue, and because of modern day compute restraints aren't a consideration when it comes to efficiency. Arguably anyone who still does use them would be the more experienced programmer though, having that mentality drilled in to them.

I see Windows, I leave. Well, in this case I heard it. There is no skill issue when it comes to Linux. It's piss easy. What you have, just like everybody else, is a laziness issue. But sure, enjoy your "productivity" while Windows sends everything you do to not just Microsoft but also third party data collectors. It's a great way to help implement the social credit system. Just don't forget to then cope at the end with "I didn't know" or "everybody did it", and of course my personal favorite "I was just following orders". I rather not be the corporations' female canine, but as you said, to each his own. Oh, and Linux is for children and video games. If you want to take security seriously you gotta use OpenBSD obviously.
