5:58 what do you mean 0 compares? How does it sort if it is not checking the values of the elements?
@kittybeans81923 жыл бұрын
To be clear, the Bucket Sort (which I called Banshee Sort for some reason) does *use* the value of the elements, but those values are not compared against the values of other elements. Instead what's happening is a complicated form of translating the value of an element into the index of the element. For example, Let's say we have a list of 100 integers, ranging from 0 to 99. Let's suppose some part of that list is, ...36, 23, 74, 18, 92... What the bucket sort does is, first, create some number of buckets, which are just little stacks/queues/lists/whatever themselves. Let's say we make ten buckets. These buckets are numbered 0's, 10's, 20's, ... 90's. So the buckets are for multiples of 10, the "Bucket Multiple" Then bucket sort iterates over the elements in our unsorted list, ...36, 23, 74, 18, 92... and simply appends them into the bucket they belong to. It finds the index of the correct bucket by dividing the value by the Bucket Multiple, rounding down to the nearest integer. So 36 goes to the 30's bucket, 23 into the 20's, and so on. This sorts everything correctly! By multiples of ten that is. To completely sort everything, you run the algorithm recursively on each bucket, so it creates ten more buckets for the 0's bucket, giving us a 0's bucket, a 1's bucket, a 2's bucket etc. Essentially, sorting the contents of each bucket by multiples of 1's, and since these are integers, everything will be sorted correctly. All without comparing any element to any other element.

It sounds like the Dynamic Range sort is meant to be used in conjunction with another sorting algorithm. It gets a very screwed up list near done, and then the second sort finishes it up.
@kittybeans81924 жыл бұрын
That's right! the Dynamic Range Random sort is great for quickly getting a list to be nearly sorted (as in, every element is very close to where it should be in the sorted permutation), but it gets slower over time. Insertion sort, however, works faster on lists that are almost sorted in exactly this way. So there's potential to use my DRR sort for a bit, then swap to insertion sort, to sort a list somewhat fast. I don't expect it to be faster than Quick Sort, but if for some reason QS isn't an option, this isn't too bad.
