I know its a hard race. But "not feeling it" seems a bit soft of a reason to pull out. Yes it hurts, it sucks, but you spend $100k and many weeks in preparation. Pull out when the bike or body is broken, otherwise just keen going!

I’m not sure if you’ve done the Dakar, I haven’t, but I’m pretty sure a person doesn’t go to all that effort and get to week 2 to just toss it in for no reason. The mental and physical strain from riding and perhaps seeing mates badly injured can affect the way you think and perhaps he got to the point where he couldn’t keep riding. Respect for getting to that point and giving it a go.
