Matt Smith has been cast in the role of the Doctor in the iconic BBC series Doctor Who. Smith will be the 11th Time Lord and will take over from David Tennant who leaves at the end of 2009. He will be seen in the forthcoming fifth series that will be broadcast in 2010.

Matt has acknowledged the small amount of backlash (of course, every new Doctor has received some backlash of some sort) his casting got. I wonder what he feels about the fact that he has become just as adored and beloved as every other Doctor before him after what had to have been something of a rough transition, following the wildly popular David Tennant and coming on as a new Doctor with a brand new Companion as well (something that hasn't happened since the show came back). Damn. That's the question I should have asked him at Philly Comic Con.

It definitely must have been daunting to not even have the continuity of the companion or showrunner, as much as it's exiting to start something new. Matt is always asked his thoughts at convention when someone new is cast and he's always so incredibly supportive and hypes them up. I think it's his way of making sure no-one else has to face the backlash he did so they get the best shot of being the Doctor. I feel bad I ever doubted the guy honestly, watching the interview back in hindsight and see how much of his mannerisms perfectly fit into his performance says it all really.

I remember hearing about when Tom Baker started Doctor Who. He was working construction one day and the BBC called him and said they were making the announcement the next day, so he went to his boss and put in his notice. When they asked why, he said he got another job. the next day the entire crew found out and they were flabbergasted.

Wild to watch this now! I remember it was a big scandal when they casted him. Everyone was up in arms about him being so young and skepticism was at an all time high following Tennant. I remember seeing the Eleventh Hour and then being blown away. Now most people consider 11 & 10 to be the best Doctors. They made a good choice gambling on him like that. Great actor.

I remember when this was first broadcast five years ago, Matt's face appeared on the screen and I said aloud: "What a weirdo." And yet he grew in to one of the most unique incarnations of the character. It's the same with Peter Capaldi, really; when he was announced I remember groaning because I couldn't imagine a man of his age filling the shoes of a Doctor who was so vibrant and bouncy, but the promo stuff I've seen of him so far have been enough to change my mind already. I can't wait for the premiere tonight!

Judging from just the pictures of Smith and his 30 seconds of film at the end of the last season of Doctor Who, I'd say I'm not too thrilled about this new Doctor; however, I would be lying if I said I wasn't at least a little curious now. The 11th Doctor is the BEST DOCTOR! So many people didn't like him in the beginning because he was the doctor replacing David Tennant who was very well liked but he 100% took on the role and replaced the 10th doctor perfectly! Yes, they were different but the 11th doctor was exactly how I pictured the doctor. The 10th doctor had so much emotion and was such a flirt so I get why people liked him, but thats not how I imagined a 903 year old man who travels through space..... the 11th doctor is. Sort of a mad scientist, super quirky, some eotion but not crazy emotion, and like a child llike enthusiasm. Matt Smith had such a beautiful sense of wonder that made him out of this world just like the doctor should be. WE LOVE YOU MATT SMITH!!! ❤❤❤❤

You really can tell, he's worried about what the public reception is gonna be. I'm sure everybody working on the show at the start of the Moffat era was. I know he filmed Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone before The Eleventh Hour, and that was a really good call, because Matt Smith having some comfort with the role definately helped cement him as the new Doctor after Tennant left.

I will admit, when Matt Smith was revealed as the Eleventh Doctor, I wasn't sure if maybe he was too young. I think I felt like that partly because it had only been a year since I became a Whovian and still had much to learn about Doctor Who. But then of course, Matt was only three years younger than Peter Davison was when he became the Fifth Doctor in the 80s. Then when Series 5 came along, I thought Matt was cool. And after those first few episodes, I felt he had made the character his own. Then in Series 6, I thought he was even better. So because of how I was initially unsure about Matt's casting, I'm giving Jodie Whittaker a chance as the first female Doctor and reckon she will be great too.
