We use Mustad O'Shaughnessy 7/0 and 8/0 sizes.

I’m in the northwest and we don’t have any ballyhoo so I’ve been trying to do this with Herring or sardines. but they the head and the body come disconnected at the bottom of the gills when I hook them. Do ballyhoo do that too or am I doing something wrong?

A note from Jim himself, “Typically, we do not experience any issues with ballyhoo separating at the gills. I am not familiar with rigging herring or sardines as trolled baits but you may need to add a small stitch between the gill plate and body if that keeps occurring. I know they can get soft sometimes from my experience with them bottom fishing. It may even be worth ordering a small quantity of ballyhoo from Baitmasters and trying them out. They deliver all across the country.” Hope this helps!
