Absolutely beautiful!!! I've had a little success with an almost bokeh-like experiment on a painting yesterday. I was trying to achieve a "universe" behind my main subject. Schmincke Paynes Grey (blue shade) really loves to whoosh so I used that as the main color. I used some watered-down liquid gall soap (here in Germany it is used to treat laundry stains and is quite inexpensive). I dropped it sparingly into the background and it created the bokeh look. I've noticed in the art store in the watercolor section that you can buy gum arabic and gall in small bottles (no idea of the price, as I didn't know what to use it for other than perhaps if I were so industrious as attempting to make my own paint ... ha-ha). I really had a great time experimenting.

Really good painting this winter Cardinal. It’s absolutely beautiful and expertly done. I’ve always wanted to paint and just scribbling around with the huge pile of art supplies I purchased before I knew anything at all about any of them I’ve found watercolor is my favorite medium to use. I was hoping our local Community College would have art classes but it seems they mostly deal with computerized graphics & such. Your lovely painting and greatly detailed tutorial has inspired me. I think if I pause the video & back up a few times I might be able to get an halfway decent likeness. It will look like Primitive art compared to yours but at least I will have given it a go! I am now following you as a Patron on Patreon and have my paints, paper, & water ready to go. Thank you so very much for sharing your sweet gifts with others. Goodnight and let’s get painting! May your holidays be blessed. I look forward to painting with you and learning so many things in the process.

Oh, Karen!!! I'm from Kentucky, and the Cardinal is our State bird. Your painting, and technique is outstanding! This is absolutely beautiful. How I wish to be able to attempt this creation in watercolors. I'm learning, and haven't tried the masking fluid. I looked on your description for the photo of this particular Cardinal, but couldn't locate. You've inspired me a great deal. Thank you! I'd love to create this Cardinal as a Christmas gift to my sister who resides in Illinois. You are wonderful!!😘👍💖🎨🌈

Just lovely! The table salt really worked well in the Prussian Blue. I wonder-is that because it’s a more granulating color? Especially under the cardinal’s tail-that looks like frosted pine needles. Also-I have a cardinal piece I did with white gouache spatter for the snow. If I use the bokeh technique on that completed piece would it work? I see you added branch detail after the bokeh-I could do that; there is room. Thanks for your input!
@KarenRiceArt3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ann, thanks for your comment and questions... I think you are right about the Prussian Blue... I also mixed it with black, so that might have also helped. I was so pleased with the results! I think go for it with you finished piece. Make sure you to a photo first... just in case! Start in a corner, that way if you don't like it, it won't notice as much! Good luck 😊
