doing this today on my 69 c10. At some point someone put a later model 305 with an internally regulated alternator AND an external regulator. Add that to the suspect alternator and my subs and amp were always going into protect mode from voltage dips. Hopefully with new high output alternator and eliminating the external regulator it will be good to go. Great vid.

4:20 When you pry back the "keeper" tabs on the female brass terminal connector you MUST be very careful to NOT be too ROUGH or HEAVY handed with them. Don't pry them back VERY far either they WILL snap off. These are the keeper tabs that the video instructor mentioned 3:31 about halfway through the video that you push down on to cause them to "disengage" on the inside of the original alternator's ( white ) plastic connection plug. SO BEFORE you insert each wire into the plastic connection plug for the NEWER style, internally regulated alternator - you HAVE TO pry the "keeper" tab, of each wire, back outward so that when you insert the wire into the new plastic connection plug it will be "kept" in place. You'll feel it "click" when you've pushed it in far enough. That will indicate that it's inserted far enough and will stay inserted. You can gently pull back on each wire after you've inserted them to TEST whether or not the keeper tab had indeed "grabbed onto" it's companion mounting surface inside the plastic connection plug.

So looking at my wires on my alt, and I think this is wrong. In the plug position, meaning the number 1 that one they have wired, with a wire going to the back post-power of the alt. In yr diagrams that wire should be the number two position. My Gauge reads only 12:3 volts only.

The beauty of GM alternators is that they're all the same size dimensionally through the 70s and 80s, except for diesels. The easiest way to pick one, is to get one from a truck. 1979 would be a good year. If you have rear defrost or power windows, get a high amp option. If you have no electrical options, a mere 36 amp alternator will be fine.
@mongrott4 жыл бұрын
You'd want a 63 amp or lower from an early 80's squarebody/g body etc.. The optional 80 amp truck alternator is NOT the same dimensions, it requires a different bracket

@@chriscraft77022 Oh, I agree that internally regulated is great, but when I can rebuild one for $20 with bearings and brushes made in USA, I would rather spend $20 than spend $50 for one that's made in China on my personal vehicle. Internal regulators last a very long time, its just a pain of one does happen to die. For a customer's car, internal is 100% the way to go.

I am having issues with it charging, I did almost everything you did, except my alternator only has one smaller brown wire coming out of the clip, besides the red cable going to the positive side of battery. I connected the brown wire from the alternator to the original blue wire, my GEN light is only on when the key is ON, but turns off after I start the car. Once I start the car; it only charges just over 13 volts. Is that good? I am not getting 14+ volts like you are.

It's been running the fan right off the battery pretty well, but at night with headlights and wipers on, the voltmeter in the cab showing 10V barely. It's not that low at the battery I'm sure, that's just the drop through the harness, but it probably is an overall discharge with that much load on the old alternator. Amazing that it's held up so long.

Did all this and the volts meter was reading 15-16volts on the battery so I figured it was charging the battery... Everything checked out good lights and everything worked as it should.. I went out this morning and nothing no lights not even a click when I try to turn it over... completely dead all around.. could it be a bad alternator would it drain the battery with engine not running if it was bad? I know I didn’t leave anything on. It’s a brand new battery! Any help would be appreciated I’m stuck. Didn’t have time to mess with it today I’m going to try to jump the battery tomorrow.

I had a 1966 Chevy 2 (Nova) station wagon back in the late 1980's it had a bad voltage regulator and putting the new one in and "balancing" the strength of the magnetic field in the ( external regulator ) was a pain in the ass. I said to myself: there's got to be a WAY to put the more modern version of A/C Delco, internally regulated alternator on an pre 1973 Chevy ( or other G.M. vehicle ) I was thinking about it again tonight 3 am, Saturday August 14th, 2021 and looked it up on KZbin. It's so simple ! A MILLION thanks to you for this great, great video. I don't understand why ANYONE would give this a thumbs down. - Jim in Buffalo, Ny

I have a 70 Chevelle that I want to convert. What alternator should I get when I do the conversion? Do I simply do a search for the same style I have but internal regulated?

@@chriscraft77022 How many Amps should I get? I see 80 Amp and a 100 Amp. I'm running 2 electric fans and a regular radio.

@@spaceace78801 it depends on the amps the cooling fans are pulling.. i have a 100 amp alternator upgrade video.. you are opening a huge can of worms with those cooling fans.. hopefully that video helps..
