On mine, I replaced all the bushings, springs, shocks ball joints and tie rods front and rear. Was like a new car. I never upgraded the alternator. I suppose if it needed replacing I'd think about it. 37 amps is plenty for me and my car. Perhaps you are putting more stress on the belt.

I did basically the same thing except I used the newer pulley and fan. Worked just fine and the 10si/12si only outputs 63 amps stock. I used to rebuild the things as well as starters and electrical systems on automobiles.Good kob though.

I believe the alternator fan on the Corvair is reverse rotation, so you may want to check that.

Not really a '1 wire' Alternator! On a Corvair, it is VERY important that the 'Gen/Fan' light on dash works! This light on when driving tells you that the alternator is not turning hence the cooling fan belt has come off/ broke.
@AutoAnatomy2 жыл бұрын
What's interesting is that my Gen/Fan light works (somehow), even though I didn't hook it up. I was told that on some cars it needs to be hooked up and some it will work without. I tried without and it worked, guess I got lucky. Sean
@tomhughes64862 жыл бұрын
@@AutoAnatomy When you say "it worked", did you test it with the fanbelt off, and did the light actually stay on? Or did you disconnect the wires going into the alternator, and did that cause the light to come on?
@Rick-O-Shay60 Жыл бұрын
@@AutoAnatomy Here again proves you don't have a One Wire alternator. Try unplugging the two prong field plug on the alt. and you will note the alt light on dash will illuminate. Luck has nothing to do with it. With a One Wire alt will not operate the warning light on dash because it loses the signal from the alt. that turns off the light. The warning light will stay on with a One Wire even if it is charging. One Wire alternators are not ideal for street because of this. They were actually designed to work on commercial vehicles such as tractors, etc.

Kinda looks like your old alternator was an upgraded one based on the color difference between the front half and the rear half. And the windings look pretty much the same between the two, not sure how the new one would provide more power. Nonetheless, this will be my go to video for if and when I need to do mine. Thanks!

Ours has a generator, is the mount different for a generator vs. the alternator? Also, do you have a part number for this gm one wire alternator?

No idea about the generator, but I would assume it would work the same way. I picked up one for a 1978 Camaro from RockAuto. Here is what I got: www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=3379887&cc=1035188&pt=2412&jsn=1

Double the charge rate is a great idea but the OEM wire is only #10 so kinda light for the extra amps. You might want to run a second wire over to the battery. Also, on the wiring harness on left side near the carb has a molded plug and if there's a poor connection in there (probably!) it will melt the plastic by the heavy wire feeding to the front. Ask me how I know this and I will tell you I had to source another harness section from a donor car because the melted plug would not fully seat and just made more heat. Adding more amps might make that condition worse. That wire feeds the wipers, heater blower, and the headlights. IOW, 95% of the car's needs. Clean it up or it will bite you later.

Good to know, thanks for the info!

The only thing I would've done, clean the front housing, and run a heavier gauge wire off the output. You double the amperage, should double the road between.
