Extinction Explained: ABA Insights for Behavior Modification

In order to use extinction effectively, we have to understand the function of the behavior. How can you remove the reinforcement for the problem behaviour?
Most important to remember: YOU CAN IGNORE THE BEHAVIOR WITHOUT IGNORING THE CHILD! If you're going to use an extinction procedure, make sure you can be consistent every time!

So this was used on my daughter one occasion introducing a new food and a second occasion taking medicine the second occasion was today and she cried for 3 hours. She was kept in her High Chair by her mother with a syringe toward her face. A psychologist was watching via phone the entire time My daughter takes medicine from me and her father with very little problem. He has not been diagnosed with autism in fact she cognitively a head

Hey! I'm not sure I understand - if there was no problem taking the medication, then why was it such a struggle? I definitely recommend using trusted professionals when implementing something like extinction

Sorry I sent my comment to soon. So if a child is having a meltdown because he can’t have the toy, how do we redirect without giving him attention. I am just looking for examples. Thank you so much. I really enjoy this channel😀

Hi! If it's a recurring issue, then there would hopefully be some proactive strategies in place that you could redirect to (eg: token board, visual schedule, etc). Otherwise, you could redirect back to what the child should be doing, directing to another activity, etc. without saying "No, stop screaming" or addressing the actual behaviour at all. So if a child wanted the toy and when it was all done, the child had a meltdown, I would try my best to help the child move on without giving them the item or addressing the meltdown. There are different types of attention and you want to withhold the type of attention that is maintaining the behaviour. You can attend to the child and also ignore the behaviour. Does that help?
