Wow, Defyn, you managed to get that exactly _backwards._ The AAC was so impressed by the Navy's new zoom-interceptor that they had Grumman make them one. But being the Army...it had to be...different. Hence, the heavier gun loadout (which meant a longer nose; which was better), and stuffing a turbocharger into it. But then the turbo blew and they were forced to bail. A normal outfit would have said, "Well! Let's see what went wrong and fix that. Build us another one, please." But this was the Depression, and the US Army was the 20th smallest in the world--so they just said, "Oh f^&k it; throw it in the trash. We didn't really care anyway." Like an Emo-kid who broke his favorite toy. Some days I really wonder how the f^&K we managed to win WW2; Honest to God.🙄 P.S. That is a fun fact. During the entirety of WW2 it was officially either the Army Air Corp or Army Air Forces. It's name was changed to Army Air Forces during 42 but was still technically under the AAC even though the AAC ceased to exist. The reason for the change was so that the Air part of the Army could have its own acquisition logistics that the ground part of the Army couldn't interfere with.
