I was in Germany in 2005 and we had the same issue. Not getting hit in the face lol but the local guys were quite forward with people they knew were tourists. We were not allowed to go anywhere alone. I think you did the right thing because not standing up for yourself makes those guys think it’s ok and it’s not!
