The dutch word "eens", literally means 'once' rather than 'now', the usual implication of urgency comes from that since it only needs to happen once, it shouldn't be that much trouble, and since it isn't too much trouble you could do it just now.

'MAAR' in the middle of a sentence, translates to 'just' at the beginning of that sentence. (unless it's used as ', but...' or 'only') - Pak maar een boek = just grab a book. Also 'maar' can mean 'only' or 'but'. - Ik had er maar twee = I only had two. - Ik had er twee, maar zij had de derde. = I had two, but she had the third one. 'EENS' means 'sometime' or 'please'. Not pressuring, but a request or a promise. - Kijk eens = please look - Lees die tekst eens voor = please read that text out loud - Ik zal [not zou] morgen eens kijken = I'll take a look tomorrow. 'NOU' has many, many uses. Combining them with other words like 'nog' changes the uses. - ben je nou nog niet klaar? = are you still not ready yet? - stop nou met praten = now stop talking. (or:) stop talking already. 'TOCH' convey annoyance in these imperatives: - Hou toch je mond = stop talking - Doe toch normaal = don't act so weird But at the end of a sentence, it's a request for positive confirmation/compatriotism, often translated with: 'right?' 'isn't it?' - hij deed toch normaal? = he was acting normal, right? - ik hield toch m'n mond? = I was being quiet, wasn't I? Then there's also the conclusion-variant: - Dit is toch de beste optie = this is the best option, after all

I think "eens" translates more closely to "once", but has a broader role. When you say "eens" you're talking about a strictly delimited activity. What you're saying also has some truth to it, but I feel like that's almost more of a secondary meaning. - Kijk eens = look at this for a moment. - Lees die tekst eens voor = Read us that text for a moment. - Ik zal morgen eens kijken = I'll take a moment to look tomorrow. It doesn't always mean the activity is short though; that's just the case for these sentences. But take for example the following: - Ik wil eens een marathon lopen = I want to run a marathon sometime. It lacks the immediacy and brevity of the first three sentences, but it still talks about something you want to do, and then move on from it. That's also important. That last sentence is not something a professional athlete would say, because they run marathons as part of their job and lifestyle. Instead, this is an exception. Hence the meaning of "once". It doesn't necessarily have to mean "once" though--you can add qualifiers to it to increase the amount as well. It's just that once is essentially the default. For example: - Ik rijd eens een paar rondjes op het circuit = I'll drive a few laps on the racetrack now. Still strictly delimited, but not just once. It gets more complicated if you add "wel" though. "wel eens" can talk about something that's a habit. That doesn't line up too well with my perspective on this at a glance, but I think this can be translated to mean "at least once", so it does still retain that same meaning at its core: - Heb je wel eens alcohol gedronken? = Have you had alcohol at any point in your life? - Ik groet de buren wel eens = I occasionally greet the neighbours.

Oké, het lukt me maar niet om een tegenvoorbeeld te verzinnen. Het gaat niet lukken, zag je dat maar in. Maar je kunt het ook uitdagend/bedreigend gebruiken: zeg dat maar tegen haar. Als dat gezegd wordt kun je soms maar beter zwijgen. Ik heb het maar een paar keer gedaan en het kostte maar twee minuten.

'Toch' can also be used in a sentence like "Daar moet ik toch een keer naar gaan kijken", meaning something like "I need to take some time in the near future to finally look into that". So for something that you could've done some time ago, but you didn't.

'Toch' generally indicates a contradiction. As in your example : "Daar moet ik toch een keer naar gaan kijken", meaning "contrary to where I usually pay attention/look at, I should start paying attention/look in that other direction (you just mentioned)".

Its funny because you can use them all in the same sentence, for example "Houd nou toch eens even je mond", doesnt change the meaning, but now that i think about it the longer the sentence becomes, the less annoyed it is, for example "Hou je mond!" is much more aggresive/annoyed than "hou nou toch eens even je mond". The latter suggests that youre kind of starting to get annoyed and warning the other person a bit that it might escalate if they dont do what you say. Of course, the tone in which you say it is the most important factor, and can both lessen and increase the impact of the sentence.

Hmm. The 'eens' one is interesting. In my experience as a Dutchy, I've seen it this way: It can indeed mean 'at once'. But it's more just 'once'. So Kijk eens would mean look once, not perse look at once. It's also kind of implying that it will be over quickly so you only have to look once. Fun fact, you can also say 'Kijk eens even'. That would mean something like 'would you look at that' implying something impressive or shocking.

Generally 'eens' can be translated as 'once'. "Once (in the unknown but possible distant future) the truth will arise (above the murky/dark water in which we can't see anything)"

A Flemish tv-show was called W817: wacht eens even... 3:41 Doe maar can also be used as in: "doe maar paprika" as a reply to "welke chips dan?". In which it translates as "make it paprika", at least implying it's your choice, but indeed it's more that it's the best out of the options. The more southern you go you can also say "doe maar eens aantrekken" instead of "trek maar eens aan".

If even is used literally the result can be 'humorous'. Like turning the light on and quickly off again, if somebody asked "kan je even het licht aan doen?" So it kind of a dangerous word to use, and it will reveal who hasn't grown out of their teenage years.

As a native Dutch speaker, this perspective is completely new to me, never thought about it this way. But it's very interesting! You can describe the function of 'maar' a bit like 'just'. 'Maak je maar geen zorgen' --> 'just don't worry'. 'Ga maar naar huis' --> 'you can just go home'. 'Nou misschien soms toch maar gewoon eens even' would actually be correct in a sentence, even though it would render the sentence pretty useless. I would personally place 'toch' before 'soms' in some cases, depending on the context.

'maar' is the contradiction your parent won't allow you when they say "go to bed & i don't want to hear you & no BUTS!!"(BUT i wanna play with my LEGO...) maar=but, it's a contradiction. The cases wherein it can be 'just' is not like 'just' as in correct right goodness or justice,... it's just as in 'only'. "only a little" is "maar een beetje" but in your example "ga (maar) naar huis" the word 'maar' is meaningless. These are a few of the most beautiful words in the Dutch language, because with them you can give a specific emotional meaning to your sentences that you cannot do the exact same way in other languages . Another one is ‘hoor’, like: ‘Dat vind ik niet leuk, hoor!’ Which means: you don’t seem to realize it, but I really don’t like what you’re doing! ‘Maar’ can also be used as a consolation. For example, your child gets hurt and you say: “ah, kom maar hier” or another example: “kom maar bij mij. Ik bescherm je wel”. ‘Maar’ used like this is one of the most tender and protective words in Dutch. Another meaning of ‘maar’: if only; “was het maar zover!” If only that special moment in time was here already. Or “Had ik maar naar jou geluisterd” If only I had listened to you... Here is a conversation you can only have in Dutch in terms of emotional meaning: “ Dat vind ik niet leuk, hoor! Hou daar nou toch eens mee op!” “Sorry, ik wist niet dat ik je hiermee pijn deed! Had ik nou maar eerst even nagedacht voordat ik dit deed. Gaat het?” .... “Ah, kom maar hier, ik zal het niet meer doen, ok” .... “Nu is het weer goed....toch?” “Ja, maar het was wel even vervelend, hoor!” “Maar het is al goed.” “Gelukkig maar!”

Toch is sort of the equivalent of the question tags like "..., isn't it?" etc. :) Toch can also be used as anyway. Hij heeft het toch gedaan - He did it anyway. (But: Hij heeft het toch maar gedaan - He accomplished something, he did it! :P ) Fun!

The words 'nou' (now) and 'soms' (sometime) are an internal contradiction in this sentence though. Hence I wouldn't say it's propor, though it still seems to be gramatically correct.

@@BlacksmithTWD it's a proper sentence in the sense that you might actually hear someone say it. I realize nou and soms are logical contradictions. But these words are often also used as filler. Nou can also indicate general discontent. Ex. "Waarom zat je nou op de grond te poepen?!"

@@cerdjee4918 No, the fact that one can hear it uttered regularly doesn't mean it's proper. Just like how the word 'literally' in english often gets abused as emphasis rather than actually meaning literally. Stephen Pinker (a linguist professor) made the joke that this is often done by members of AWFUL (americans who figuratively use literally). The fact that many people tend to use words they don't know the meaning of as filler doesn't make it that all of a sudden those words are being used properly.

These are challenging words! What about : “Nou hoor”, “Nou zeg!?”. Then ‘nou’ doesn’t mean ‘now’, but more disbelief. Same with “toch”. “Ja toch?”, you say when you seek confirmation on a statement you just made. But also I saw the other comments about “toch” which are also true. Strange word this “toch” :-) Good video again! So fun to watch every time!

I always find it curious that to me, the Afrikaans(e) sounds like Dutch with an English accent. I never thought about my own language (Dutch) like this. "Ja toch?" "Ja toch!" Is also very common to hear. The question mark being not sure about a subject and the exclamation mark is you being really secure about what you think.

So it may sound like "doe is omdraaije", but it means "doe eens omdraaien" and that's below the great rivers Dutch for "draai [het] eens om". 5:38 Well well, now look at that. Or in Dutch: Nou nou, kijk nou eens naar dat. So in my experience nou translates as well or indeed just: now.

Your videos make me analyze stuff about my own language that I never gave any thought before :) I suppose 'toch' loosely translates as 'despite everything'. So you can say 'Ik ben toch naar het feestje gegaan'. Or 'Doe toch normaal!', which sort of means 'Despite what you think you should be doing, I'm telling you to start acting normally!'. But the 'toch' also makes it almost a plea, I think. It indicates that the person in question has repeatedly not acted normal and you're asking him/her to please, finally start acting normally. You could even stuff an 'eens' in there to emphasize it even more ('Doe toch eens normaal!'). Just my two cents.

I never saw these little words as something special. I just took them for granted. But come to think of it, I find these little words really useful to bring a nuance to a sentence. One other important little word is "wel". I can't think of an English word that does the same thing to a sentence.

They even are problematic for many native dutch speakers, especially with so much influence of the English language that many dutch people are not even able to actually speak a full dutch sentence as they forget or didn't learn certain dutch word and start inserting the english words to replace them . Yet to me they are a major part of why I love my native language. It's those little words that give the meaning to the sentence as they point out how the larger words relate to each other. If changing or leaving out these little words, the meaning of a sentence can become to mean even the opposite. Just like with the english word 'not'.

*length alert* Still have trouble believing your self taught😄👍 You pretty much got it down, though the translation for 'quickly' is 'snel' not 'even'. and don't be afraid to add words when direct translation doesn't convey the right intent. I think the easiest way to think about it, is that the words 'even', 'maar', 'gewoon', 'eens' generally convey different aspects of the word 'just'. different meanings for the words usually only come into play when trying to use multiple words in the same sentence 'Even' refers to the time the requested action will take, it's not the unit of speed in which the action is to be taken. So using your examples 'Wacht even' = the action is waiting, the timespan is short, not quick 'Mag ik jou pen EVEN lenen'= May I JUST borrow your pen (for a minute) 'Mag ik jou pen SNEL lenen'= May I quickly borrow your pen (as in now, for an unspecified time) 'Mag ik jou pen SNEL EVEN lenen'= May I just quickly borrow your pen (,now, for a moment) 'Kan je het licht even aandoen' = Could you just (take a second, to) turn the light on Whereas 'Can you quickly turn the light on' translates back to 'Kan je snel het licht aandoen' 'ik ga even naar de winkel' = 'I'm just going to the shop (for a minute). 'even' refers to the time I plan to spend in the store. Not necessarily the whole trip. It is the time I've allotted to the task irrespective of the normal travel time. The destination can be hours and hours away, if I'm planning only a short stay, I will still say dat ik er even naar toe ga. If I'm quickly going to the shop, I'm implying that I'll be rushing all the way there and back. 'Maar' gives permission for the suggested action to take place. It usually deals with a generalisation, don't automatically assign the action to someone or something, that's usually handled in the context 'Maak je maar geen zorgen' = 'Just don't you worry'. More of a suggestion, allowing them not to worry 'Don't worry about it' is more of a command, instructing them not to worry. 'Maak je maar geen zorgen' is also a general statement not specific to a topic. To make it 'about an it', it would need a word like 'daarover'. ' Maak je daarover maar geen zorgen' ='Just don't you worry about that' 'You can go home' is again more of an instruction, a fairly dismissive one at that. Also you're assigning the action of going home to a subject that the Dutch doesn't. 'Ga maar naar huis' translates to 'Just head on home'. It's a general suggested action that anyone can take. It needs a pronoun to be assigned 'Ik ga maar naar huis' = I'll just head on home 'Ga jij maar naar huis'= You can just head on home hij, zij, wij, etc etc. 'Laat maar' en 'doe maar' are a bit of an outlier because they only give permission. Both the suggested action and subject are found in the context. And without either, the English either doesn't make much sense, or becomes hyper metaphysical. It doesn't always have to be an indication of apathy though. It can also be a warning or encouragement, but generally suggestive rather then instructive I'd translate 'laat maar' as 'just leave be/ just let be' depending on context And 'doe maar' as 'just do' or 'just be' also depending 'Eens' works much like 'even', as a unit of time, not speed Kijk eens= just (have a) look. You can add 'snel'(quickly) or 'nu'(now)for expediency: 'kijk eens snel' (just have a look quickly) but if you say 'kijk straks eens' you say 'just have a look later' immediacy is usually implied, but not inherent to the concept. 'Lees die text eens voor' = 'could you just read that text aloud' (there's no mention of a 'for us' or 'now' in the Dutch, so there shouldn't be in the English, while it might be implied it could just as easy be about next week to a different group of people, or tomorrow alone in front of the mirror) 'Ik zal (zou is past tense) morgen eens kijken' =I'll just have a look tomorrow. ( no urgency, i'll spend some amount of time tomorrow) 'Nou' or 'nu' is a bit like 'maar' with it's 'just'/'but' it can mean 'now, this moment in time' as in 'Ben je nu nog niet klaar?' 'Even now you haven't finished?' (either surprise or annoyance) or 'just' as in 'just stop talking and go to work = 'stop nou met praten, en ga aan het werk When 'just' means 'gewoon' it establishes an action as a baseline to inform the suggested action. Like 'doe gewoon' doesn't so much translate as 'Act normal' as it does 'Act you'. 'Doe gewoon' compares your current behaviour to the baseline that is your default behaviour, and suggests you return to the latter Ik rijd gewoon door' = 'I'll just continue on driving.' The baseline action is dat 'ik rijdt. 'gewoon' and its companion word(s) informs us that the next action is the continuation of that last action. Do you know the movie "Ciske de Rat" and it's title song called: "Krijg toch allemaal de Kolere val van mijn part allemaal dood".(Kolere=Cholera) One of the most famous Dutch songs, ask your partner about it ! It's about a boy who lives with his mother who treats him very badly, really need to watch it, almost every one in the Netherlands has seen it and i think it's one of the reasons why we are using sicknesses as a swear word. For instance: "Kijk maar" When someone is unsure about time or amount or anything related to something unsure in the future you can react with "Kijk maar." It is a lot like "What ever works for you." No,.. not random at all. The words convey a time or possibility. Toch is a confirmation request or statement, depending on inflextion. Closest English word would be right. Right!? In German they use "doch" in a similar way. Maar, misschien wellicht,.. al give a possibility of action. Doe maar,.. not sure you will do it, but I do not object to your effort and sort of support it. Eens is once as in some undisclosed time in the future and used pretty much in that meaning. "Eens ga ik het doen." "Er was eens,.. " our "Once upon a time..", Literally "There was once,.." If you translate the words literally and give it some though how the meaning has progressed over time of such words it starts making more sense. But the Dutch language has retained the Germanic fetish with time and precise expression of meaning and mixed it with uncertainty to twist the exact meaning with inflextion and position in a sentence. Yeah,.. there's a reason an estimated 15% of the 4th or later generation natives would fail their NT2 test. Dutch is not an easy language which is the reason that until recently we didn't really bother to enforce it upon some poor souls that want to live here. The sad influence of the brownshirt populist that trample Dutch traditions with far flung fantasies.

I've bee thinking about 'toch' and how to translate it, it's close to meaning 'verily' "Doe toch normaal" could be translated as "act, for real, normally" and if added as a postfix to a question as in "dat is waar, toch?" It'd be close to "that's true, is that right?" If you'd say "dus toch" it would translate to "so it is true" So much about language just comes down to feeling though, direct translations are often impossible for the nuances of it.

You're quite right about the meaning of "dus toch". Maar met comparing "toch" to "verily" I disagree. It's basic meaning is like "in spite of", stating contradiction. (De bakker was dicht maar we hadden toch (nog) brood). If you ask "toch" you're looking for agreement, a negative version of which would be "of niet (dan)?" (you can always add this after toch... It's even a common phrase together "Jatoch niet dan?", implying those who hear you would share your opinion) IMO "Toch" in sentences like "hou toch je bek" just means you should not say anything in spite of all the speaking that you're doing, and "doe toch normaal" means 'act normal (even though you aren't)". If someone should urgently do something but they seem hesitant, you say "Doe dan!" or "gooi dan!", it's like opposite of "toch" (and it means "then" in its regular meaning)

'toch' is not always 'with force', it often is, but it depends a bit on context: imagine two lovers, one says: 'so... you wanna kiss?' then the other says: 'je weet toch' (you know, dont you?) no 'force' at all. Het woord "stuk" kan verschillende betekenissen hebben. Namelijk (1) iets is stuk=something is broken. (2) Wat 'n stuk!=what a hottie (very beautiful person). (3) stuk als in aantal. Bv de zin; dat zijn 10 stuks=the amount is 10 pieces.

In all examples you provided 'stuk' can be translated as 'piece'. 1) It's in pieces, 2) what a piece (though in english more common to say of art than of a pereson), 3) There are 10 pieces.

Casey. You made me struggle to explain how these words are used. And about 8 minutes in, towards the end, I am losing it: how do you explain the sentence “Misschien moet je nou toch maar gewoon eens even gaan zitten”? It’s a perfectly fine sentence in Dutch to explicitly ‘invite’ someone to sit down (and listen, or something similar). But how could we explain all these particles combined…?

Hello Casey, 'Mag ik jou (= personal pronoun)pen even leven?' should be: 'Mag ik jouw (= possessive pronoun) pen even lenen?'
