I think that misses why Homer framing Marge was a real issue. Here's a question: Why did Homer frame Marge? Does he have the maximum amount of DUIs he can before he loses his license? Is he worried about upsetting Marge? Unlike Jim, I think this plot could have worked, all we need is both a reason as to why Marge is framed and for Homer to take responsibility for his actions and actually realize he took advantage of Marge's desire for more time with him.

Plus in the kidney episode, I don't care nearly as much about Homer's relationship with Grandpa as I do about his relationship with Marge. It's way less disturbing for the Homer-Abe relationship to be played for super dark humor. I mean they've already had Homer straight up call his childhood traumatic. But his relationship with Marge is supposed to be one of his main redeeming features.

I feel like the story could have worked if you take out the DUI and have the conflict be that Marge realizes she has a drinking problem, but is conflicted about quitting because she's finally having something she can share with Homer, her having to juggle her health and her newfound bond with him. Yeah, this had really nasty undertones. Homer was acting like Peter Griffin, but without the show accepting it's just ridiculous, like Family Guy does. The weak attempt at a conclusion made it feel like a justification of abusive relationships. The really offensive thing is that it feel like the writers don't care. They just have loose idea, a string of jokes, and try to shove a story around them. But we care, because we grew up with Simpsons as hilariously, beautifully crafted television. The turn of the Simpsons reflects the good and bad points of America- the early years involved hard work and ingenuity. But when the show had run its' course, the reflex of greed and the priority of profit set in.

This would have been much better if Marge had been out drinking with Homer, loving that they are spending more time together, and she had been the one driving! She passes out and Homer actually saves her from the DUI by switching seats with her and the difficulty then comes from Marge berating Homer into giving up alcohol not realising it was her that had crashed, he does so to protect her but grows to resent it and finally tells her the truth at the end of act 2. Then act 3 is about them as a couple trying to work through the issue together

I feel like a big problem with this particular episode is that Homer's misdeed is simply too reprehensible to work and as a result the writers more or less painted themselves into a corner. I cannot even think of a good way that Homer could have redeemed himself here considering how heinous his actions are. Kidney Trouble is an interesting comparison, but in that case it's at least somewhat understandable to consider why Homer did what he did, awful as it was. In that case he was motivated purely by fear, especially after being egged on by the guys at Moe's, and of course as you said, Homer pays dearly for what he did. Co-Dependent's Day on the other hand is more like, "Homer acts like an ass, the writers can't think of a way to adequately deal with it, so they don't. The end."

Exactly. Seasons 11-18 (basically pre-movie), while a decent dip in quality from seasons 1-10, were still enjoyable in many ways. You can still tell that the writers were having fun and enjoyed their jobs. There was still effort, energy, and passion, even if the episodes didn't have much to say. NONE of that is in the recent seasons. The show just feels so lifeless and slow. Every joke feels forced and desperate, and the voice actors sound like they're just waiting for their paychecks.

The most unpleasant part of this episode is (in my mind anyways) the fact that this is kinda more realistic in a sense that they dont play homer framing marge for laughs at least while hes in the act, and that she forgives him almost instantly for a betrayal like that while shes still suffering the consequences of what he did to her.. kinda like a real life co dependent relationship.. "hes a bag of shit but I like doing things with him" to quote you. this episode kinda depicts a very unhealthy co dependent relationship, not even with homer and marge drinking but their relationship together as a whole, is the definition of co dependent, he needs her to be his ever loving caretaker and she needs him to support the family and love her, even though hes a neglectful, irrational, selfish, drunk. HOWEVER I dont think the writers were going for this. Because they generally try not to make homer look like an abuser, which this would make him...

Just the Hypocrisy in this episode makes me angry. The first half of the episode pokes fun at the Prequels, and how bad Star Wars become over the years. I think it would have worked this way: After finding out about this shared interest, Homer and Marge start drinking together. Homer is having fun and doesn't notice that Marge's drinking is affecting her health negatively because she has less tolerance than Homer does. Homer at first is completly oblivious to Marge becoming an alchoholic worse than him, and Marge is not only addictive but doesn't want to say anything because she enjoys their time together. Homer underestimates how drunk Marge is and she crashes the car. He's unconcious so he can't take her place or do anything about it. Marge is sent to rehab and Homer tries to sneak there to talk to her. I don't know, anything that doesn't fuel that stupid "Homer is an evil abuser" theory.

He was not going for a lot of those nuances. The corrosive influence of money in politics and the complicity of big business in democratic backsliding was definitely intentional, and ahead of its time. I'll give him that. But any nuances regarding, for example, the Jedi Order, were a total accident. They really were supposed to be seen as an unalloyed good and their fall was Anakin's fault for not repressing his emotions like he was supposed to. Lucas has said as much in interviews. Any subtext about the Jedi Order bringing their fall upon themselves through the more questionable aspects of their ideology is, at least in the films themselves, a total accident.

Why were they so obsessed with shoving in Star Wars references out of nowhere during the mid-season era? I knew this episode was awful, I was merely surprised you deemed it that bad, but looking through the comment and seeing your explanation was enough for me. Still, nice to get this little episode to tell the full story

Every time I see people lampoon the Star Wars prequels, all I can think is “People REALLY didn’t understand what George Lucas was going for and the nuances of what he was doing and how brilliant it actually was.” I believe it took the burgeoning popularity of The Clone Wars and Rebels, and the MAGA movement that would eventually take place to get people to realize how ahead of of the curb Lucas was and that he really predicted where we might be heading if we are not careful.

How did the maga movement lead to people liking the prequels

@@romaldosanford5893 Because Palpatine evokes many aspects of Donald Trump and his movement.

@@romaldosanford5893 It’s a case of art imitating life as many of us know how Trump wants to make the country starting to morph into a dictatorship if he’s re-elected, much like how Palpatine managed to reshape the Republic into the Empire. Star Wars is now like a cautionary tale of what might happen to us if Trump gets re-elected.

I totally agree that this episode makes light of alcoholism and codependence!

Episodes like this & the one with Ricky Gervais were the episodes I grew up watching on Sky in the 2000’s, which I think is why i never really liked the series as a kid, until I watched the older episodes years later. Also, please think I’m biased because of my avatar.

The only major issue I have with the "Simpsons" through the whole series is how they banalize alcohol addiction.

Actually, I wouldn't want to drink beer after watching the Simpsons. Who wants to be Homer Simpson. Also, beer is gross.

The weird thing is, this episode would be fine if Marge actually _did_ cause the DUI. It wouldn't be great, but at least the resolution would feel earned.

Doesn't it work? Why would she stay with him if she wasn't emotionally committed to thinking he's a good guy and even obsessed with him? Marge is a character who can only maintain her happiness by shutting out all realistic views of everything and everyone around her, and I like this as a key point in developing her tragic character and her growing complicity in Homer's crimes

Hate this episode. It's also a great example of how the writers are being total hypocrites when bashing George Lucas and the prequels for selling out and "betraying" the orginal trilogy, while they have been doing the exact same thing for the past twenty years. If you make an episode like Lisa Goes GaGa, you have forfeited your right to say anything about Lucas.

I remember watching this episode for the first time years ago and not taking it seriously and while I didn't have a problem with it, Marge and Homers revelations at the end were joke of a... joke... It was a semi-dark do not take anything away from it type of episode, but certainly not a good one, I agree with your positive points though.

I actually do find the Star Wars stuff too on-the-nose, to point that it almost doesn’t even feel like satire but just straight-up mocking. And while I disagree that you can’t do an episode that pairs Marge and Homer finding common ground and then Homer screwing it up, I do agree that framing her for a DUI and all the (lack of) consequences presented in the episode are truly awful. It’s also an annoying one because Act 1 is pretty much just a mini-episode. They could have wrapped a whole episode around that concept. There’s any number of ways they could’ve gotten to the main plot, but it doesn’t feel organic here. All-in-all, I don’t even think the good jokes here are worth the watch.

As much as I agree with the alcoholism part, there actually excists people like Marge who either childlishly ignore the problem or are too clingy so to evade the problem. "As long as we are a couple" -kind of people. Its not a healthy relationship because both parties have uncured mental issues, but I can see that this episode depicts reality in the end.

I'm surprised that someone with a connection to troublesome alcoholism hasn't had a problem with how much the series trivialises alcoholism CONSTANTLY. Yes this was the worst example of it, but Homer was literally a physically abusive alcoholic from day one. This episode is trash for tackling it with an absolute lack of taste, but it's just a case of doing the shit they've always done but more blockheaded.

An idea: Instead of Homer framing Marge, have Marge actually be the one drunk driving. Or have Marge take the blame for Homer's drunk driving on purpose because she not only enables his drinking but actually encouraged him to go beyond what even he normally would. Or how about have Homer admit he framed Marge as soon as she bailed her out instead of waiting until halfway through the third act? Maybe Homer already has the maximum amount of DUIs he can have before his license is suspended, considering he's the one who goes to work this would make framing Marge understandable, albeit not moral. (It would be a good chance to dive into the whole "a reason is not an excuse," idea.) Wait, here's an idea: Have Homer realize his drinking is an issue, he starts trying to cut down by only doing it at home, Marge joins him, and they end up just making everything worse. Notice all these ideas--while not all of them are good--would at least be better than this. For that matter, notice how all my ideas take this adult subject and treat it as an adult subject. This episode is not interested in treating this subject with maturity, it's just interested in making Homer look like an asshole.
