Before that, you can imagine Sea-worms ..sand-worm: Annelids perhaps.. After some millennia, their guts got leaks, swallowed too large stuff.. fortunately the leak side-body made way for large water flow that plankton came in, non-stopped. They were burrows makers so this waterflow was good feeder for them. After million years these porous filter (to catch plankton) became effective Oxygen extractor and made them more Energetic enough to move around frequently. (( But what make simple Annelids became switched ; anterior-end (ProtoStomata)became posterior-end, first-emerged(Deuterostomata) was their DIGGING Behaviour; buried their "head" into the sand and the top-hidden "Anus" waited to catch prey.!! (Primitive worms had their equivalent/similarity ; between either Head or Tail..(if cut in half, both ends will grow in two separated individual.. (only low- phyla can do.) Presumed Amphioxus tentacle-mouth..were long, long time ago, used to be ANUS.. while used-to-be Head (anterior) buried, now become TAIL. (Strange eyes, now located on previous posterior/anus side).. Brain-in- the-ASS Worm.

Those who came long ..long before proto-Fish in Permian era.. The first swimming - filtering creatures. Non-sessile ones.!!

The strangest are SALPs and Pyrosome... The are rather.. Floating or you can say.. bit squirting (altogether) than swimming, to get moved-on.. some are in very long..long colony of hundreds individual.

The Squirt-moving is the same as Jetting Octopus, cephalopod.. Mollusc. Or swimming-Sea Shell (Gastropods); other than.. the Scallops, Bivalve ; real flapping/flying sea-shell.!!

Sorry, ...Octopus is Cephalopod,.. among the common Gastropods (sea-shells).

Nudibranch is also swimming Molluscs, it was originally sea-SNAILs but without SHELLs.. abandoned for lighter weight to swim easier. Their scheme in swimming is totally different from those Squirter ; Octopus and these Urochordate Larvae. (Later, some had wiggling TAIL.. to help faster swimming than just simply squirting/Jetting, alone. Sessile Sea-Squirt is called Tunicate.

Among all swimming sea creatures, Fish-gills are the most efficient Oxygen extractor.. make it (fish : blue-finned, Marlin.. all the speedy kinds, amongst the most competitive swimming.. far beyond the Mollusks (poor gills); Nudibranch, Nautiloids, even the Octopus & Scallops are FAST at very short SQUIRT before exhausted-away, while large marine fish is long range open-sea swimmers.
