I think the theory is that the Romans DID know how to build ships, it's just that Carthaginian ships were FAR more superior; large yet aerodynamic, and with more space for more rowers. If the Romans did anything well, it was to not only copy technology but make it BETTER. They added a rotating crane-like contraption to the ships that enabled them to latch onto enemies and board them, which gave them an edge against Carthage. The Romans also showed this kind of innovation and adaptability when they altered their battle formations in order to evade and tire out Carthage's elephants. Rome's ingenuity and ability to change is what defined the Punic Wars.

I mean, I doubt that many German students (except the ones studying history) would know about the background of the games but it's probably way worse in the U. S. Wega Wind your right. when i went through school 90% of our history lessons revolved around american history, and even then it was mostly just the "main stuff" like WW2 (but not WW1) the Civil War, the great depressions, and the Civil Right Movement. They only taught us the bare bones minum when it came to world history like Rome, Greece/Alexander the Great, and Egypt. They never went into Asian, Afircan, or Asian history except the silk road and maybe a week on Mesopotamia and Persia. They never even really got into WW1. For anyone wanting more information about the Punic War The History of Rome podcast goes more in-depth into this. Dan Carlin also did an amazing trilogy on it on his Hardcore History podcast, but it is one of the older episodes so you have to pay for it.

EC was always EH to me. Because ‘Learning Matters’, I am on a perpetual quest to learn and pursue endless enlightenment in many topics, but I think ‘History’ has always been my favorite passions. I am a bell ringer and I have been keeping up with other, similar channels that have popped up since. And just yesterday, ‘Oversimplified’ did its own take on the First Punic War and I am reminded to make my respects here. Thank you, EH/EC Crew, from all unseen voices and writers behind this series. 💜 I love history. 💕 I love this particular content. 💕 Thank you so much for making me love history from back when I saw this in High School, to now being at a crossroads after College. Y’all the bomb. Even though I am personally ambitious to be a writer who loves Worldbuilding, I have to admit, you all make me speechless. Y’all make learning matter and I love you share this for free. Thank you and I hope for ‘Extra History’ to remain an integral piece of internet history. 💙

I think your Extra History videos are awesome. How commendable that a gaming company would take a small portion of the money that was remaining of their leftover budget and allow creation of these videos. I have many friends and relatives to share your channel with, many thanks!

Wait a second: How was Hamilcar able to afford to pay off an army of mercenaries to defeat his other army of mercenaries when Carthage had no money? why didn't he just use that money to pay off his original mercenaries, rather than hire up another army (which would have had to be bigger than the original in order to beat them in battle)???

Carthage was broke but he wasnt. State and leaders were not separated that much before as today.

I highly doubt that it was from Hamilcar's pocket that the mercs were paid. he was a general, after all, and not a higher-up in the government. And I think the government would have viewed their city being besieged as an extreme urgency
