Honestly, the consistent and simple art style is one of the strongest features of this series. To clarify for those confused: The Jurchen/Jurched were a Tungusic tribe (related to the later Manchus) from Manchuria who had established the Jin Dynasty in North eastern China, an empire with its capital at the modern site of Beijing. The ruler caste were all Jurchen, while they ruled over Han Chinese and Khitans, and they were the Chinese empire Temujin would have interacted with here. The Jurkin were a Mongolian steppe tribe who were destroyed by Temujin here in this video. Important to understand the difference!

Similarly, the Jurchen Jin Dynasty is sometimes called the Great Jin (or Jurchen Jin) to differentiate from the earlier Jin Dynasty. Normally the context makes it clear which dynasty is reffered to, although I recently read an article on the building of border walls where both Jin Dynasties were brought up at different point and it would be unclear which one was being referred to.

4:42 A interesting fact about that silk; It wasn't considered just luxury by the Mongols, it actually became a important piece of their armor kit. The Mongols would later wear silk shirts underneath their heavy coat and Lamellar Armor. It acted like a medieval version of a Kevlar vest as it was a effective countermeasure against arrows due to its strong and flexible thread. If a arrow were to pass through the soldiers Lamellar and heavy coat, the silk undershirt would usually stretch and wrap itself around the arrow as it started to penetrate the body. This would not only lessen both the penetration and damage the arrow caused to the soldier, it also allowed for much easier extraction of said arrow as you could simply pull the silk around the arrow to get it out. the toughness of the silk would prevent any barbed arrows from hooking into the flesh.

The etymological history of the word is quite interesting as well. And by that I mean how it entered European languages, as I don't know about Mongolian itself. So, Ordu (as it was used in Mongolian) was transfered to the Polish language as "Orda", meaning vaguely Mongol unit (this was after Chingis had reformed the system). Then the French took it over, changing it to the Horde. In that form, it endered the English language as well. But then it came back to Polish language as "Horda". Funny enough, it has exactly the same meaning as the French and English name, while "Orda" was also still kept, having more or less the same meaning as original Mongolian name (Poland was subjected to various Mongol/Turkic raids centuries after Temudjin's death, so they had generally better idea of what Ordu was than some Frenchmen in the West).
@MrMayorqw6 жыл бұрын
I seem to remember that the 'Urdu' (as in, the Urdu language) was borrowed from more or less the same origin, but with 'ordu' meaning 'army' or 'army camp' instead of a council.

A note on the word "ordu" or horde: Ordu in Mongolian actually means house, a la House Lannister, and it does not mean a mass of people riding horses. In Modern Mongolian, it can also mean palace. I have no idea why exactly the meaning of the word changed so much from its meaning in Mongolian to English but I suspect something got lost in translation around Russia since they refer to Mongol hordes as "orda".
@ТомасАндерсон-в1е6 жыл бұрын
When Rus was conquered by the mongols, they established the Golden Horde, which referred to the palace of the ruler and, by extension, the country (the same way that the Crown could be referring to Britain). Russians took this word to refer to the country and, consequently, the forces they were facing. Some propaganda later, and the forces of the Horde started being associated with what we now call horde. Hence the current meaning.
@Saikhnaaaaa6 жыл бұрын
I'm no expert on this but at least that makes sense. Perhaps the word "Ordu" meant army originally but somehow evolved to mean "House" later on. Or maybe they meant both at the same time. Or maybe the Mongols and the Turks just had different interpretations on it. In any case, the fact is that in Modern Mongolian, it has no connotation to being an army. And as Genghis Khan and his people were Mongolian (including Batu Khan and his Golden Horde), there's probably a direct link there.
@goldenshark75466 жыл бұрын
In both modern and Middle mongolian "ordu" means "house" or "palace", Batu Khan and his Golden Horde khanate is written as "Altan Ordun ulus" which translated as "Kingdom of Golden Court/House".(golden is play on the word, Chinggisid line "Borjigin" is known as Golden line, and in mongolian tengrism gold is described as center of nation/power. So Batu named his territory as Golden House was indirect powerplay against other cousin-khanates)
@Saikhnaaaaa6 жыл бұрын
I think overtones of a close familial environment was deliberately meant to be enforced by Genghis Khan's policies however the word Ordu itself does not have a familial connotation. It's pretty much purely political. But then again Genghis Khan had people from the Jurkins, for example, that had all the tangible benefits that his own family members had except, perhaps, the ability to directly inherit his will.
@puneetmishra4726 Жыл бұрын
The word 'Ordu' is also the origin of the name of the language 'Urdu', originated in India by the Muslim Turkish aristocracy of Mughal Empire and now the state language of Pakistan.

@Theodore459216 жыл бұрын
With the Tatars we must remember a few things. This was the tribe that was likely responsible for Temujin's father's death and were generally the blood enemies of the mongols. So Temujin (Temuchin) was ready to gain revenge against them. Second the reason why the Tatars had so much Chinese wealth was because the Jin had a practice of kind of endorsing one tribe. They would give them aid, trade deals, etc. In return this clan would gain power in the Steppe and would fight back the other nomadic tribes to keep the Jin safe since raids from Nomads were common. Then once that endorsed clan was gaining too much power, and that they might swallow up the rest of the Steppe and pose a threat to the Jin they would shift their alliance to another clan. For example Temujin's grandfather Qabul Khan had been supported by the Jin when he had ruled over the mongols. This cycle continued on for many, many years.
@Vitalis946 жыл бұрын
Was the reason why the Tatars were "blood enemies" of the Mongols because they were Turkic? Well, one could argue that Mongols are Turkic as well, but they were clearly two distinct people, no? At least culturally?
@Theodore459216 жыл бұрын
Well later the Russians would pretty much come to call all Turks and some mongols as Tatars that lived in Russia, but these people wouldn't be these Tatars. I don't think Chingis Khan would have liked so many people being called Tatars. But these Tatars were a type of Mongolian, but not part of the Mongol tribe. The mongolian tribe and the Tatars had many confrontations in the past and there was just a lot of bad blood and conflict between them. Hence why the Tatars poised Temuchin's father. Now Mongolians and Turks are a bit different. Their languages are similar but still very different. Kind of like say Dutch and German. If you were a Mongol you might be able to pick up on some Turkish but it would still be different and you couldn't understand everything. The Turks had originated North of China, I believe north of Manchuria, east of present day Mongolia, and were nomads as well. They had actually formed, I believe two empires. One ca. 500BC and another ca. 744AD. They would eventually get defeated by other tribes and then be shot out west. Some of these would eventually become the Seljuks who would become the Ottomans. With the languages we see later after we get world conquest several new languages crop up. What would happen is you would have Mongols, Turks, Persians, etc. all in the same camp, and so camp languages would start to merge and form. This is how languages like Urdu, the official language of Pakistan, would form. Additionally there had several words and customs from the Turkic Empires that the Mongols would use. I believe the word Khan originated in Turkic. We'll see the Mongolians use the decimal system for organizing their military which the Turkic empires had employed before. I hope that answered your question, in fact it probably went above and beyond.
@Fnatic20106 жыл бұрын
Nope, Xiongnu Empire was the one to utilize decimal system. Xianbei were the first to use the word Khan.

@@Vitalis94 Tatar is a rival Mongol tribal confedeation they were not Turkic until the Mongols used the Tatars they spared as the frontline and the troops his Son Jochi used to conquered Eastern Europe and the urals and hence forth all Western Turks like the Bulgurs,Penchenaks and Baskhirs started calling themselves Tatar a Mongol name the Chinese used in records for The Mongolic tribes as Dada/Tata. Little disappointed they mentioned the Taichud tribe but didn't mention Jebe, one of the greatest generals in Genghis's army and the Mongol conquests, and maybe one of the greatest generals of all time. Along with Subutai, who they better talk about soon!!! Genghis Khan, even though he is pretty awesome, didn't do it alone.

Extra credit, you guys are doing good works, you know that? But you need to mention the eight loyal warriors who served Genghis since he was still Temujin. Because Genghis considered these eight mens to be his best friends for life and they, in turn loyalty served Genghis Khan and their descendants served Genghis’s sons and grandsons loyalty Their names are Boorchu, Jelme, Khobillai, Subetei (both Khobillai and Subetei are Jelme younger brothers), Mukhalli, Borokhul, Jebe, and Chilaun

Another excellent series. I can't get enough Extra History. I could watch 20 episodes per day and still crave more. I love the focus so far on Temujin's rise to power. Most of the stuff I read/heard so far was about his exploits after uniting the Mongols. I knew very little about this part of his life. If I could have one request, could you throw us a bone in the form of a map from time to time ? Helps visualise the extent of his power (how much territory he was actually in control of) and how much he gained when he beat the Tartars or the Jurkin. Thank you.

@Saikhnaaaaa6 жыл бұрын
Jurchen and Jurchid are the same thing. In Mongolian, Jurchen refers to them in singular while Jurchid refers to them in plural. And yes, Genghis Khan fought with them as they were actually the Jin Dynasty at that point and Yi Sun Shin fought them before they became the Qing Dynasty.

Those were the Jurchen, not the Jurchid, they are two different tribes(I think...).

Thank you for doing this. Most people skip over his youth, but I have always found his early story truly amazing. Once he had the mongol war machine under his command, conquering the world practically came easy. But how a random nobody on the step came to control the most terrifying army in history (perhaps) is a historical epic worth learning about.
