📜 The History of Genghis Khan: The man now known as Genghis Khan, leader of all Mongols, was ready to show the world what he was made of. He acted in fairness towards his own people and happily began integrating Chinese citizens and their culture, but showed no mercy to those who opposed him.

Extra credit history good job so far on the Genghis Khan series he is one of the most fascinating figures in history. But I hate to be that guy, no matter how great he was this campaign would lead to the deaths of somewhere between 30 to 50 million people.... To put that in perspective that would be around 7 to 10% of the world's population at the time. Not trying to be negative Nancy but all the good that he did came at a tremendous human cost and we should never forget that.

Wow, I'm actually really impressed with Extra History for differentiating the different Kingdoms, Song, Jurchen Jin and Tangut empires and not just lumping it into "China" which gives off the misleading sense of that it was a unified nation. And Calling "Beijing" by its real name at the time. Not even BBC documentaries gave off these details. Honestly good work you guys. These kingdoms constantly plotted against each other, much to the benefit of Genghis Khan.

Chinese population is actually quite diverse historically. Number of ethnic groups got assimilated into China (modern terminology "Han") either willingly or through conquest. A number of dynasties were started by non-Han attempting to emulate Confucian culture of the Central Plain. Also a number of ethnic groups assimilated because they conquered some Chinese dynasty and became the opulent ruling class. Just that in the past few centuries, Han got subjugated by foreign conquerors that basically treated everyone the same for few centuries, so everyone got mixed together.

What a fascinating story that is so much deeper than I expected. I always pegged Ghengis Khan as little more than a power hungry warlord who conquered territory just because he could, but between religious freedom, brilliant domestic leadership, and being on the receiving end of his neighbors scorn I'm now seeing him way differently. Sure he wasn't NICE, but hes a hell of a lot more interesting now. Keep it up EH.

In this series' perspective, he portrays GKhan as a rags-to-riches golden boy who reformed an entire region. What I find interesting about him now is how he introduced civilization and order under common goal mentality, and not fear. That, is a great leader right there.

@Timothy McLean: Canada and the United States are allied. As are, strictly speaking, France and a number of other nations. As are South Korea and the United States. If any of those nations turn around and show up at the leader of the other nation with a random ass messenger who has been told to impolitely demand that they begin paying a tithe to that other nation, I guarantee you strong words are going back, and that some degree of national strain -will- occur. Especially if it's done loudly. About 100 years ago, such an action might have resulted in territorial disputes beginning. A mere fifty years before that, it could have turned -very- swiftly into a war. That's not to say that such a move as going to war isn't crude, overly violent, and perhaps a touch of an overreaction, as there are dozens, hundreds, possibly even thousands dying for the simple act of an idiot lord, but Ghenghis Khan's resources at the time, and his life experience, did apparently lead him to act in such a manner. And, to be honest, I've acted in similar manners in games when I've had a vassalization demanded upon me by a force that I believe to be my personal equal or inferior amongst AIs. "We have nonaggression and trade and you're demanding I serve you? Hmmph. Well...maybe I can use your land better then you."

Eh I wouldn’t go that far. The Khwarazmian Empire was massive but not the entire Middle East. Unless you’re excluding The Levant entirely. 25% of the civilian population living within the Khwarazmian borders were slaughtered prior to the entire area being annexed. Really though the most important part of this campaign is that it began the domino effect that would leave Genghis Khan controlling almost all of Asia.

The thing is that Mongolian cavalry originated from nomads and were built for mobility. They didn’t need supply lines because they never used supply lines as nomads, they could move around in winter because they had to do that back home, and their horses didn’t need as much food. The result is that the Mongolian Empire had an army that couldn’t be hampered by resource shortages or bad weather.

Didn't Japan's invasion come down to; Mongols get their with their Chinese and Korean Levys, proceed to wreck the Samurai's shit due to radically different tactics and superior ships. 2 Tsunamis wipe out half the army, the Mongols go "Fuck it" and leave because it wasn't worth the effort. I love the images you use, they have such character! But some important details were glossed over in the campaign against the Jurchen: First, you list them as the Jurchen Dynasty. They were the Jin Dynasty, but Jurchen was the tribe that made up the rulers. Sometimes they're called the Jurchen Jin to differentiate from the earlier Jin Dynasty but don't tend to be called 'the Jurchen Dynasty.' That's more semantics than anything though. You mention the Mongols came in as liberators, but don't quite provide the context. The Jin Dynasty had three main ethnic groups who played significant roles in this period: ethnic Han Chinese, Khitans and the Jurchen. After the collapse of the Tang Dynasty in 907, the Khitans (related to the Mongols) established an empire, the Liao Dynasty, on the steppe and in Northern China. They ruled until the early 1100s when the Jurchen conquered them. Some Khitans fled west to form the Kara-Khitai Khanate (which Kuchlug usurped control in) while the remainder stayed in China but under Jurchen control. The Khitans and Chinese were excluded from government positions or high military rank by the Jurchen, BUT! the Khitans made up a significant portion of the Jin military, and resented the Jin. When Chinggis Khan invaded in 1211, there had actually been a Khitan uprising a few years before and his invasion led to another one. Distracted by the Mongol attack the Jin were unable to crush the uprising, which led to spread to a consider amount of territory in Manchuria and declared its independence. While it is debated over to what extent Chinggis Khan played a direct role in the early part of the uprising, he certainly encouraged it, sending armies there to help the Khitans maintain their revolt and even recognized this new state as a new 'Liao Empire.' So, Chinggis had come to liberate the Khitans, not the Jurchen (although this new Liao state was a vassal of the Mongols rather than actually independent.) Considerable amounts of Chinese and Khitans defected to the Mongols in this period, enough that by 1213 there were entire Chinese and Khitan armies fighting the Jin on behalf of the Mongols. It was also form these defectors that the Mongols would gain catapults and other siege equipment, as entire contingents of engineers would willingly defect to the Mongols. It is important to note the Chinese concept of the 'Mandate of Heaven' for its dynasties. A dynasty which earned the support of heaven would defeat its enemies and flourish, but this support could be rescinded. After significant Mongol military victories over the Jin from 1211 onwards, after years of famine and flooding in the Jin Empire, it must have appeared to many that the Jurchen had lost the Mandate of Heaven, and Chinggis Khan now had its support. Thus to join the Mongols was not as much a betrayal of the Jin as it was simply a recognition of the inevitable.

Of Note, The Mongol Empire wouldn't finish conquering the Jurchen (Jin) Empire until 1234. Taking a total of 23 years after the start of the invasion under Chingghis (Genghis) Khan. It wouldn't be until his son, Ogedei became Khan and finished taking over the Jin. The Tangut Empire, or Xi Xia Empire, eventually would submit to Chingghis Khan, and were rolled, incorporated, into the Empire. Which is important because they promised their support to Chingghis and other tribute, and military support. But they will eventually turn on Chingghis and deny him support causing him to invade again. The Uyghur Empire after killing Kushlug would be rolled into, incorporated into, the Mongol Empire. Also the Trade Caravan that Chingghis Khan sent to the Khwarezm Empire wasn't murdered by the local governor who thought that the caravan were spies. The Emissaries that Chinggish Khan sent to the Shah were muslims and did demand repayment for the goods and men. These Emissaries were muslim, and the Shah was also Muslim, and shaved the beards of the Emissaries that he sent back to Chingghis khan.
