As a native Kentuckian, the war was, confusing. Interestingly, kentucky was upside down with pro slavery plantations in the northern part of the state and abolishionist towns and cities in the southern part of the state. Also, Confederste General Simon Buckner would become Kentucky's governor after the war, I actually grew up with one of his descendants and honestly, the resemblance despite 6 generations of seperation was unreal

@@princeofawful935 This isn’t a simple question to answer, no surprise. The causes for the succession movement were both cultural and political, the succession papers go into their reasons beyond the subject of slavery. A subject that comes up a lot is the relation the South had with the federal government in regards to the enforcement of laws regarding slavery. An academic named Donald Livingston has multiple lectures on KZbin that go into the cultural aspect of the conflict that doesn’t get much attention.

@John2r1
@John2r1 Ай бұрын
Honor had very little to do with the decisions made on both sides of the various issues that lead to Secession. And ultimately to the war. Delaware like Kentucky, Maryland and Missouri all had strong economic ties to the north. And choose not to secede for that reason. Kind of like North Carolina was one of the last states to Secede waiting until it was practically surrounded by the emerging Confederate States of America before choosing to secede. Also fun fact West Virginia is the only state to Secede from the Confederacy. And join the Union after the war began.
@manugamer9984
@manugamer9984 Ай бұрын
@@John2r1 you’re right, but one can always hope they acted also out of a sense of duty: it was still a thing back then, after all… stuff like that may not be true in the end, but it makes up for a good legend and teaches posterity some morals. The world would indeed be a much grimmer place if morals didn’t play any part: after all, one is far more ready to fight for duty and honour rather than economic ties.

DuPont Hospital, DuPont country club, DuPont state park, the Hagley museum which used to be their gunpowder mill, plus plenty more. My favorite is Longwood Gardens which is an enormous theme park sized (maybe a little bigger) garden center with all kinds of plants, flowers, water works, music, and shows. It also has one of Americas largest greenhouses which has a giant ballroom and living quarters since the whole place used to be a DuPont residence. It actually gets its name from from the Underground Railroad, since “Long Woods” was one of the stations escaped slaves would stop at as they made their way up north.

People forget the Union slave states. The Union originally declared only those slaves in the secessionist states free. The Union states carried on with slavery, and the CSA controlled the affected states, so slavery didn't really end until the Civil War ended and the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments were passed (though Union forces freed some slaves as they passed through Confederate territory). This wasn't an oversight - it was a very careful political maneuver to gain the alliance of abolitionists in the CSA, and to begin freeing Confederate slaves who would then hopefully be friendly to the Union, without causing the Union slave states to draw back their support of the War or, worse, secede themselves.

The Hagley museum is a pretty dang cool facility and is absolutely worth a visit if you happen to be in that neck of the woods.

I see even back then people from Delaware couldn’t shut up about being the first state. Some things truly never change.

Maryland was also a conflicted state. I wonder what would have happened if they did succeed, because of D.C. and whatnot

Precisely because of D.C., Lincoln was determined to go to any lengths to prevent Maryland from seceding. He sent federal troops to the state legislature in 1861 to prevent a vote on secession and arrest the pro-Confederacy members.

The Meramec caves were actually called saltpeters cave and was used to get the main ingredient of gunpowder (saltpeter ) during the civil war

More important the gunpowder was the charge caps that were exclusively made in Missouri. Which was also a very interesting state in the civil War times.
