🎄 Join us for the untold history of "War on Christmas" in the Plum Pudding Riots! This bizarre history made it to the states when Christmas was outright banned by the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1659. An act that had deep roots in the Puritan-led Parliament's fight against Christmas in England during the 1640s, leading to riots, propaganda, and contributing to the English Civil War. 🌟

Latin America and the Phillipines had a completely opposite history with Christmas, it's not just one day; its a whole season of festivities. In Mexico it begins since Advent with "Las Posadas" and then comes Nochebuena or "Good Night" (Christmas Eve), then a less formal Thanksgiving like party on Christmas Day. Then more revelry in New Years (in Mexico they follow the Spanish custom of eating 13 grapes, each for each month of the year plus one, at midnight) and also cider is preferred in many homes to Champagne. Then comes the "Rosca de Reyes" or fruit glazed round cake and then the children get their presents. And last on Candlemass (La Candelaria) you feast on Tamales of all flavors, colors and sizes and then finally its over.

In Austria we Banned any Christmas Items before November. Only Exceptions are things that can be asociated with Saint Nicholas. They put it in place, because in 2017, they went bonkers with christmas starting in September. One radio DJ of a major radio station even played "Last christmas" for 38 hour straight to prove this is madness. He locked himself into the studio and baricaded it. He kept his job and the Goverment passed a law that banned the selling and marketing of christmas goods outside of November and December.

Not-so-fun fact: The Puritans (and some other Dissenters, but IIRC not all) were opposed to a lot of other stuff that qualified as 'fun' at the time, even things that did a lot less damage than Medieval English Christmases. For example, the desire to ban bear-baiting, not because it was violent, nor the harm it did to animals, but because the spectators enjoyed it, even when they weren't gambling.

"They don't celebrate Easter in the bible." Don't most non-English languages call it passover which is like... celebrated in the NT. Granted not in its modern form and far closer to its original Jewish tradition (because at that point it basically was). Then again Puritans are like... insane.
@timothystamm3200
@timothystamm3200 5 ай бұрын
@cg4259 well here I am to correct you depending on the Gospel, Jesus either died the first day of Passover or the day before on the day of preparation. So Easter and Passover cross over a little bit except they don't because they're all celebrated based on when the Hebrew Calendar Month of Nisan starts. That is determined by when the full moon is sighted after the vernal equinox. The Julian, Gregorian, and Hebrew Calendars all have different ways of determining that. So, it rarely lines up that Eastern Orthodox, nor the Western Churches Easters exactly line up, nor that Passover occurs at the same time because they each use one of those calendars. Eastern Rite uses Julian, Western Rite and Protestants use Gregorian, and Jewish holidays follow the Hebrew Calendar.

Two major things that be pointed out 1)- The Pilgrims were NOT Puritans. The Plymouth colony was eventually subsumed by the Massachusetts Bay colony, yes, but the Pilgrims were a separate Dissenter denomination and specifically fled to the Netherlands to avoid Puritan purges of other Dissenter groups during Cromwell's regime. Thats a pretty important error in the video that should be corrected, 2)- Catholics had once repressed Puritans yes, but this was far from a one way street. In fact the coalition that strove to overthrow Cromwell specifically included Catholics, Anglicans, and Dissenters of all stripes due to the Puritans attacking all other forms of expressing Christianity, and later political cross-denomination political alliances such as the Jacobites find in their origins in said alliance. In addition, the Puritans were explicitly genocidal of ethnic minorities for even tangential associations with other denominations & faiths. Their pogroms against Jews are the most well-known example, but their racial & ethnic genocides of Irish and Romani people (in spite of conversions to Protestantism) were very much under the pretext of their associations with Catholicism and non-Puritan Christian practice, rather than just racism as is commonly misunderstood (although that certainly played a factor as well).

Like you said in the video, for all the "War on Christmas" stuff we here nowadays, it's hilarious that most people aren't aware of the actual war on Christmas that occurred in history and more hilariously that it was waged by certain Christians. The war against Christmas is to stop its hostile advance across the entire calendar The current front lines of that war is Halloween... and some places have already maneuvered around it, putting out Christmas Stuff the day after Independence Day. And then you got Hobby Lobby who has a permanent Christmas section all year round. In a way,... Christmas is already engaging in a war of figurative genocide. The only day immune to their attacks is Independence Day itself, cuz the only thing they love more than Christmas is the flag.

As a Protestant christian, I don't mind celebrating Christmas or that it is now being a secularised holiday. Sure, greedy companies taking advantage of this holiday does suck but having friends of different beliefs or no beliefs celebrate it together is just fun and wholesome.

No one can stop other people from having their own beliefs, but at the same time no one can stop people from having fun either. So it was always going to be a lose-lose situation when it comes to Christmas. So you either compromise so continue to fight a losing battle. I'm glad compromising worked out

Good video, I just merely have one quibble. Christmas and Saturnalia have nothing to do with each other. It's a common misconception, but it's a misconception none the less. Christmas is dated as it is due to the Annunciation, which is dated due to Easter, which is dated due to Passover.

Yeah then why did some of the traditions that he mentioned the Puritans trying to kill sound almost exactly like Saturnalia. The King of Misrule is almost one to one with the Saturnalia King. See Historia Civilis for more about what Saturnalia looked like.

@@PhilipK635 You realize how general you made both sound, right? Thanksgiving involves feasting, drinking, and merriment as well, but I'm pretty sure no one would tell me that Thanksgiving copied one of the other two. Furthermore, happening in December isn't really evidence. Saturnalia for a lot of its history was celebrated on the 17th of December. Christmas, when it got its later date when Christians pinned down when they thought the Annunciation occurred, always took place on the 25th when popularly celebrated.

While the puritans may have believed it, Christmas traditions like Christmas Trees and yule logs do not have a pagan origin. Religion for Breakfast has some great videos debunking the memes about Christmas being 90% pagan.

I've seen it in other spaces, too. Like how Dec 25 was Jesus' birthday because someone decided the Annunciation was Mar 25. The belief amongst early Christians in Rome was that perfect people were born precisely nine months after their conception. And this was in Rome, second century CE, by a man named Hippolytus. Roman Christians in the second century CE knew jack-all about the Gaulish or Nordic traditions. They didn't care about Mithras, either. The greenery on the walls of houses is real enough. Pretty much anything from the period of evangelization and conversion that coincides with winter solstice traditions are 100% due to the fact the priests tried to end the hold of older ways on the population and failed. At best, they judged some of it "mostly harmless."
