As Indonesian, this surprises me. You just painted a whole different picture of Gajah Mada. We know him as a loyal servant of Majapahit that brought glory to the kingdom. Then again, perhaps he was loyal to the kingdom, not to the kings who ruled it. Perhaps he was more of Tywin Lannister to the Targaryens instead of Ned Stark to Robert Baratheon.

I remember playing as Gajah Mada in the Age of Empires II: Rise of the Rajas Malay campaign. It was a pretty fun campaign with awesome battles and objectives. It was a bit of a downer at the end when Gajah Mada tried bringing the Sunda kingdom into the Majapahit Empire via betrothal to his king, only to use the marriage alliance as a way of letting the Sunda let their guard down so Majapahit troops could invade them and destroy their kingdom. Because of this betrayal and the fact that it had sullied Majapahit's reputation, the last king Gajah Mada served had him dismissed and he eventually died in retirement in disgrace. I can't wait for you guys to cover that devious scheme of his and the effects it had on Majapahit after his removal as Prime Minister.

I think you mean polygamy? Jayanegara was completely childless despite being egregiously polygamous. He had to be removed while the princesses were still able to bear children.

Gitarja is quite underrepresented in Indonesian history narratives (and history in general). Idk but people mostly dont know that the Palapa Oath was taken in her reign, and it was her (with the help of Mada) who practically laid out all things that led to Majapahit Golden Age. As a side note, she actually ruled under the auspice of Queen Rajapatni (her mother, one of Raden Vijaya's wife, the youngest daughter of last Singhasari king), because Rajapatni had became a bhikkhuni (she was a Buddhist). Once Rajapatni died, Gitarja transfer her power to her son Hayam Wuruk. This is probably why Gitarja herself is rarely mentioned, because apparently she was "just a regent".
@junirenjana6 жыл бұрын
@@sarasamaletdin4574 Vijaya officially took all 4 daughters of Kertanegara (the last king of Singhasari) as his wives, plus several other women from Majapahit vassal states. Only two bore him sons: the eldest Kertanegara's daughter, mother of Kalagemet; and Indreswari or Dara Petak, the Sumatran consort, mother of Jayanegara. Vijaya made two women as his queen consort, Rajapatni (the youngest Kertanegara's daughter who has no son) and Indreswari (who bore him Jayanegara). That's why Jayanegara became his sole successor. Once Jayanegara died without any successor, the role went to Queen Rajapatni instead of Indreswari, because Rajapatni is part of the dynasty while Indreswari was an outsider. Rajapatni, who practiced Buddhism and had became a bhikkhuni, delegated her role to her daughter Gitarja.

When Gadjahmada say he won't "taste spices", what he mean is he won't taste any worldly pleasure until he united all of the archipelago (Nusantara) under Majapahit's rule. That oath is called Sumpah Palapa (Palapa Oath). Palapa itself means nutmeg. A slight change from the word Pala. Thanks for creating this video. As an Indonesians, I'm really interested on how foreigners think about Indonesian History.

I love roman or greece history more than my own Indonesian history, the way this episodes make me realize Indonesian history is very much like every history in the world, filled with intrigue politics, cunning scheme plot. By the way back ,in school I never thought that Gajah Mada is the one who masterminded this Great Empire with such a scheme and ambition.. I thought Belissarius and Justinian was the best dynamic duo in history.. but now I think Gajah Mada and his "minion" Hayam Wuruk is the best duo. Keep up the good work, dude.

I really appreciate these vids, especially with the focus on places and times often ignored by most places that teach "world history" in this country. I don't know how it is now, but when I had world history in high school some 50+ years ago, the POV was so western focused it was ridiculous. Oh, we got Egypt and the rest of the ancient fertile crescent, but after the Roman empire split into east and west, the texts ignored everything east of Italy and the Rhine except for a brief nod to Eric the Red and Leif Ericcson. It was abt then in the mid-60s they were finally conceding that maybe the Norse really did make it to North America before Columbus. Otherwise, the "world history" texts of the time pretty much treated everything else as nonexistent until some group of Europeans showed up. Then they would be so amazed at finding these long-settled and civilized lands that somehow just sprang into existence so that a bunch of greedy gits could milk em for everything they could. Like the whole thing with the Near East. Once Rome left, it didn't exist until a bunch of crusaders decided they were going to "take it back" (when it wasn't theirs in the first place LOL). There is so much history and culture out there to learn, and I do appreciate anyone who goes out of their way to fill in those blank spots.

As an indonesian, i will try to explain The oath Gadjah Mada made (Palapa oath / sumpah palapa). It stated that Gadjah Mada will not eat spices (literally spices) before he conquered all of Nusantara. (As Extra History previously mentioned in the previous video about Majapahit, spices was that glorify, so this oath kinda makes sense at the time). But Indonesia historians also translate palapa as resting, meaning Gadjah Mada will not rest until he conquered all of Nusantara. In conclusion, Gadjah Mada will not eat spices until he conquered all of Nusantara. By eating spices, it means he will not rest.

9:25 Let me explain this vow, the oath contained "I never eat nutmeg" something like that. What it does mean? that is he is fasting until the Nusantara is united (Because spices are what make the food more delicious). So he doesn't eat spices If you still understand, search "palapa oath"

Worse consequences, maybe, but more understandable. Disrespecting some upstart nomad who lives thousands of kilometres away is usually pretty safe, except for the fact that this particular nomad happened to be Genghis Khan. My history teacher told about that "Sumpah Palapa" or the vow itself. The term palapa is an Old Javanese term for "coconut". It also might be used to refer to pala (nutmeg) to describe "spices" or flavourings in food. Palapa can also be interpreted as the combination pala-apa, which means any fruit or spices, meaning that Gadjah Mada won't take any of life pleasure until all the Nusantara were conquered. He told me that in the past
