It's not only about faith in the monarchy but also a huge security risk. Knowing that a simple cut could be enough to kill the crown prince is quite an issue. They could have used some other pretext like religious study or something though. Let's be honest the last Romanovs were bad at PR and their advisors were possibly even worse.

While people may have lacked faith in the Tsar and his wife, they likely still had faith that once they died their son would have taken up the title and potentially made things right. Revealing your sole heir is inflicted with a life-threatening condition would've shattered any faith remaining, as then people, particularly politicians who can gain large followings and want to know the best bet for them, have no idea what will happen once the rulers die, meaning they may just back a rebellion to make sure that they'll still be on top no matter what, as opposed to waiting for them to die and hope whatever civil war/succession crisis happens leaves them on top.

This whole thing makes me understand the importance of honesty, if the royals had simply told people why Rasputin was there and not hidden the princes illnesses people would be more forgiving. Sure the illnesses would make people doubt the monarcy as the heir would be seen as weak, but since they were hiding it the public imagined even worse secrets. What was in their minds was far worse that the things that they were actually hiding.

It seems Rasputin was akin to one of those evangelical preachers who philander and maybe make too much money on promises of miracles but actually believes in their religion and is utterly sincere. You forgot a bit about Rasputin's assassination attempt; the timing of the attempt meant Rasputin was out of action when the assassination of Prince Franz Ferdinand set in motion the events of WW1. By the time he had recovered and got back to St. Petersburg, Tsar Nicholas II had given the order to mobilize the Russian Army, thus irreversibly starting the First World War. Basically, the injury meant he couldn't be there to talk Nicholas II out of starting the war. Maybe he could have succeeded, maybe he couldn't. But basically, he could have prevented the Russians from going into a war they were woefully unprepared for.

People had a different attitude about war pre-WWI. Wars were usually smaller in scale, commanders were usually nobility who had a better chance of survival and could advance their social status by military success and pay writers and poets to glorify war. Better artillery and chemical weapons, more widespread literacy and the sheer scale of death, where entire towns lost nearly every fighting age male and many returned home disfigured changed all that. It's said that when WWI was announced, everyone cheered, when WWII was announced, everyone wept.

I knew that most of the history about rasputin was a tall tale, but now that you say that the newspapers had a monetary incentive, I think that they could have been a little taller, basically everything that can be said for sure is that he helped some how to cure alexis' disease and got the favour of the royal family, everything else is a gray area.
