Teddy Roosevelt figured out that the courts aren't a productive way to battle the Trusts. There's no way they can catch everyone and in order to protect the American people, it's not enough to punish the Trusts after wrongdoing. No, they're going to have to put down some proactive legislation to prevent this action before it event happens. But the conservative-leaning Senate is going to be some rough going. And matters are made even worse when the opposition finds leadership in one of Theodore Roosevelt's greatest enemies: "Pitchfork" Ben Tillman

However, and correct me if I'm wrong, but in the early 20th century, wasn't "socialist" considered a generally crowd-pleasing and "cool" term? Isn't that why several political parties, including hitler's, adopted the "socialist" label to get public support?

Today, Tillmann is probably best remembered for something totally unrelated to racism or trusts: fed up with the ever-increasing costs of naval arms races, he commissioned a series of designs for battleships so ridiculously large and powerful that, in theory, the navy would just build those and be done once and for all. Nobody at the time took the designs seriously - except maybe for Tillmann himself - but they have remained a favourite of naval history enthousiasts as amusing "what-ifs".

Yeah, THAT Tillman. The same Tillman that so infamously was so fed up with the navy that he proposed his own set of "Maximum" battleships as every battleship was being built just a bit bigger than what was ordered cause innovation. The kind of battleships that would put the Yamato itself to shame but proposed 2 decades before Yamato itself, featuring designs using 18" guns when the yamato itself only had 18". He was a penny pincher ironically suggesting the navy build maximum overbuilt units. Id look over at Drachinifel's video on the Tillman designs for pure hilarity.

the 2nd design is my favorite one. 70 000 Short tons (63,000 t) a "pedestrian" 13 inches of belt armor 26.5 knots 975 feet long 108 feet wide 32 feet, 9 inches deep so far so good, an absolutely monstrous sized battleship, but where does the displacement come from? 13 inches of belt armor? that's the armor on a Queen Elizabeth, maybe a Revenge, they are ships of the time and weigh about a 1/3rd of what this monster would weigh, so where does the displacement come from? well, the armament. because Four triple 16 inch guns was considered a pedestrian option, this design called for *TWENTY-FOUR*, 16 inch, 50 calibre guns in four Sextuple turrets. yes, that's a turret with six guns Drachinifel made a great video about the various designs

Oddly, I watched Drachinifel’s Tillman video before this one. That video is about 10 minutes long. When I finished it I checked my recommended videos and saw this one had been posted 7 minutes ago. I mean you off handidly mention that last bit, but we can all agree that wasn’t a good thing right? Imperialism is bad, and US imperialism has tended to stick in a rather nasty way. The last invasion of panema by the United States was 1989 and that history death, racism and exploitation is in no small part thanks to Teddy rose. Not that Wilson was any better, anyone who’s policies have the mind boggling term “resegrigation” which is so wild my phone is sure I had to have meant it’s inverse is going to be a real treat of a human being, just that Teddy is not the Irl Steve Rogers crossed with chuck Boris ideal of a US president that he’s sometimes portrayed as but a deeply flawed person who’s policy highs (that as this series portrayed were real high) were more than matched by his policy lows. Also the man was very racist, and by very I mean like... notably for early 1900’s America. Which is real impressive, although noteably he saved most of his bile for Latin Americans outside the US

Roosevelt fought the workers too. The man believed in what he considered a "fair deal", but his idea of what was fair was what he imposed from above, not what workers demanded. He still rounded up, arrested, and in some cases had executed various leaders of major union movements. Teddy Roosevelt is a good example of noblesse oblige; of this aristocratic sensibility where a man of privilege is supposed to help those beneath him but they are - emphatically - *beneath* him. Roosevelt believed that the working classes shouldn't be trodden underfoot but that, in the end, capitalists should still be able to exploit them and grow wealthy off of their labour.

RANDOM FACT Tillman would later lay down ideas for a series of battleships known as "maximum battleships", later known as "Tillman battleships". These ships were of some ridiculous designs that really pressed the boundaries of US shipbuilding. The Navy dismissed pretty much all of his ideas (though some of his ideas would later be incorporated into the Iowa-class and designs for the Montana-class battleships).
@watchm4ker
@watchm4ker 3 ай бұрын
In fairness, those weren't *his* designs, per se - he was no naval architect. He had commented on the growing madness that was the Dreadnought arms race, and the resulting naval appropriations bills, and demanded the Navy simply cut to the chase, stop with the ever more costly incremental improvements, and just build the largest theoretically possible warship the USA could make. Which had the unfortunate result of invoking the Good Idea Fairy in a number of engineers and designers who decided to submit proposals for the "Tillman" Battleships to increasing levels of improbability.

There's one kinda funny thing about Tillman, he HATED how much money he had to agree to spend on Battleships. And how every year the next one was bigger and more expensive than the last! So he asked the Bureau of Contruction and Repair to make a design of a ship as large as possible, so he can pay for it now and forget about it later. The following designs are known as the "Tillman Battleships" and are, absurd. Most of them would've been bigger than the mighty Yamato. and have things like 4 6 gun 16 inch turrets (24 guns, almost 3 times the firepower of a single Iowa class)
