However, it's natural and wise to maintain a safe distance when encountering a snake, particularly if you're unsure of its species or potential venomous nature. After all, self-preservation is a basic instinct shared by all creatures, including humans.

I'm surprised how they aren't wearing pierce-resistant clothing to handle the snakes, and those snake hooks look really short! Considering the guy was hospitalised three times you'd think they'd be doing more around operational safety.
@JimmyBlether Жыл бұрын
Thick bite proof gloves and clothing tends to be cumbersome (besides garters or whatever they're called which you put around your shins and shoes), especially gloves. They would have considerably less control over the animal while wearing gloves so not wearing gloves technically might be safer than wearing them. They have the poles for keeping the animals down and keeping them at a distance anyways for a reason.

Honestly I think puff adders (and the rest of the Bitis genus) are rather cute comical looking snakes. Silly proportions and chubby cheeks (those are the venom glands BTW). When they grab their food, if its not huge, they kinda freeze in place hanging onto it and it looks like they're too surprised to process they succeeded.

*Extracting venom from deadly snakes is a dangerous but invaluable task. This venom is crucial for developing antivenom, essential in treating snakebite victims. It also holds potential for medical research, possibly leading to new treatments for various diseases. However, it's a practice that must be done responsibly, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of these snakes.*

For anyone concerned about safety re the number of bites and not looking like they have protective gear on, please note they need to have freedom of movement when handling the snakes and things like thick gloves can reduce dexterity. The Herpetarium at LSTM hasn't had a bite in over 20 years, so please don't be concerned by lack of gloves etc. They are following best practice

@JimmyBlether Жыл бұрын
Few potential reasons. Being noodles, snakes are somewhat cumbersome to hold if they're trying to resist you (for good reason). They're not slimy, but they can be quite smooth. Wearing gloves that would protect you from a bite would reduce your control over the animal, hence why gloves are not worn. Biteproof gloves are pretty thick, and may not even protect against species in the Bitis genus (like that very grumpy puff adder) as they tend to have long fangs.
