Basil leaves is a plant from the mint family, this plant is also native to tropical region. Basil leaves is oftenly used as ingredient in cooking for its aromatic scent. Basil leaves also contain essential oil, as well as polyphenols, phenolics, flavonoids, and phenolic acids, that can be used in many ways as it has plenty of pharmaceutical benefit, such as treating kidneys problem, earache, menstrual irregularities, arthritis, and even effective against fungal, bacterial, and some infections. Not only that, the oils also being sold at a high price, so there’s plenty of variation of method being developed to extract the oils more effectively. There are plenty of ways to extract the essential oil from the leaves, one of them is extraction using microwave and solvent. In this experiment, solvent NaCl was used. The use of NaCl is to see whether using salt-based solvent was effective to draw out more of the oils from the leaves. In this experiment, there are several variables that was used, such as the mass of the leaves, microwave temperature, concentration of NaCl, volume of NaCl, and time of extraction. The basil leaves that get extracted is fresh basil leaves, the leaves are also separated from the plant, so the extraction is purely on the leave. The methods that’s being used is electrolysis, where the extraction is being done by electricity, this electricity comes from the microwave. The leaves are put in a round bottom flask connected to a condenser and an extractor to separate the oils and solvent. The oils that have been separated is then put into a small vial. The water that stills in the vial was separated manually by using syringe. The oils then weighed to see the effects of the different variables. The optimization of this experiment is done by using Box-Behnken Design (BBD).
