this is phenomenal how you guys managed to film a neoceratias in its natural habitat, this is like one of the holy grails of deep-sea fish research

The best parts of these ALWAYS are when the scientists all go "OOOOH WHAT IS THAT!?!" Because I'm saying that too, and it's so lovely to share such wonder with other humans, even divided by space and time. I'll never go on an ROV expedition (for one thing I'm no scientist, and also I'm claustrophobic as heck, ha!) - but I can experience some small slice of the joy these people take in their work. I'm sure there are long stretches of nearly nothing, and many hours before and after the dives for study, research, labeling (and re-labeling if you got it wrong!). But these highlights just make my day every time y'all upload! I too would love a Dumbo Octopus plush, that little eye-closing was ADORABLE - looked like the octopus also put his little swimming "ear" over the eye for a second, just too darn cute! And really tells you a lot about how different the normal light levels are when there aren't curious humans about! Last but not least: about to go and read up on these "goose neck barnacles" but why do their tops look metallic? Or is that an illusion from the water in some way? I seriously thought they were golden, not made of gold maybe but VERY similar in look, it's uncanny!

"We want to protect these Ecosystems", I one hundred per cent agree and yet there are commercial mining companies want to strip these areas bare, and I despise them.
@DustinHaningАй бұрын
The areas they want to mine are like 4-5x deeper than this and don't have any of this kind of sea life. The sea floor in those areas is almost entirely barren. That said, there's still a lot of problems with stirring up hundreds of tons of sediment that may take decades to settle again, so you're not wrong. Just pointing out that those areas being talked about for mining look absolutely nothing like this video.
@Para2normalАй бұрын
@@DustinHaning I was talking about the mining of sea mounts, and yes while I know the mining companies are also talking about the plains with Manganese Nodules those have also proven to have unique micro biomes of their own.

Please put a scale measurement overlay on the video for the spacing between the lasers. It would really help to understand the size of what we are looking at. Amazing videos. I really enjoy hearing the dialogue between the researchers and what they are seeing and thinking.

So many weird creatures deep below! Imagine for a second if there is aquatic life on Europa or Enceladus and how that might look, scientists would probably spend decades if not more discovering new species. Let's hope for the best that Earth isn't the only place in our solar system that has life on it.
