I used to be a 2nd Assistant Director and this is the best documentary on what it's actually like to be a supporting artist. Most are absolutely lovely, some are mentally ill, and the worst ones are the extras that have been street cast so don't actually care. There would always be one of the street cast ones who was sat down behind the main action in, say, a restaurant scene and they have been in the back of every shot. Then at 3pm when you still have another 5 hours of filming they tell you they have to go home because [insert fake reason here] but really they were just bored or cold or hot. By that time the £60 for 12 hours on a film set isn't looking so good and they would do a runner or go and hide. I can't blame them either. It broke my heart sometimes. Some times we would have tonnes of fun.

Derek is a comedy-drama series created by & starring Ricky Gervais. Karl also stars in it as a caretaker.

Karl should've played a major character in Extras. He could've played an extra who's a friend of Andy & Maggie.

Karl briefly mentioned the caretaker magician part in a talent show in an Idiot Abroad series 3 when at the Indian circus and is talking about revealing an egg and saying its a bird but just not born yet and wanted to know how to say it in Indian. He tells it in more detail a few times on the XFM radio show
@quench100 Жыл бұрын
The caretaker/magician reference was another event he talks about on XFM. This is not exhaustive but most of his appearances: Ricky Gervais XFM Radio Show (2001-2005) Ricky Gervais Show Podcast (2005-11) Extras (2007) An Idiot Abroad (2010-2012) Derek (2012-2014) The Moaning of Life (2013-2015) Sick of It (2018-2020) Lots of other short interviews or cameos I've not included. You're nearly at the end of the podcasts but there's so much more you've not seen/heard. Although bits of stuff on XFM you'll know from him mentioning elsewhere, but you've got so much left to learn 😆 I know it's a weird concept but you should do a poll to gauge interested in people watching you listen to the radio shows. I know I would!!

Oh you need to watch Derek, he's a major character in Derek. That's more recent than Extras.
@wildwine6400 Жыл бұрын
This is his first acting roll, followed by a bit in a prequel to Rickys movie "The Invention of Lying", he then was a background extra for about 2 seconds of screen time in Rickys movie "Cemetery Junction" . Then he started An Idiot Abroad for his first major tv show. He had done some random tv work prior to this like the video you watched of him going round a museum/zoo etc
@ShawnD613 Жыл бұрын
About the “caretaker/talent show” part, Karl talks in the XFM shows about how there was a talent show at his school, and not only did he do a magic trick with an egg turning into a bird (he ended up revealing an egg to the audience and saying ‘oh, it hasn’t been born yet’), he also acted as a custodian who would come out between the other student’s acts and keep the crowd warm. Kind of like a talent show host.

I was an extra for Richard Curtis " About Time " , Had to get up at 4 am to be there and on set for 6 am , And didn't leave until 8 pm , And did that for 3 days and got £400 for it. .... If you're interested in the movie process then standing around ain't so bad just watching how things work. Also you make new friends etc.

There is another behind the scenes video of Karl as an extra in one of Rickys movies. Its ok to see as the bit didn't make it into the film, it was a DVD extra prequel to the movie. Its not on here in full so I'll sort it out and either send it you, or I'll just start putting up Ricky ,Steve and Karl stuff and link it you

Thanks for this, The Real Extras. So fitting that his task is to produce something real! Mandy's description of Karl as a "let's say comedian" is apt (more than Karl Pilkington would claim himself). I did learn the best thing about Karl is that he's unremarkable.

Well it's important for the recording to get an agreement that anything behind the scenes that day might be published. They all know what they do might be, so they may have been less the way they usually are. EDIT: although having a load of cameras backstage is a pretty good indicator of that too, so they probably can't miss that

A'right? Just as Karl had to wait around for ages for his moment, it seemed that was reflected nicely in the series, when Ricky and 'Maggie' were extras and they spent most of the episode not doing their role, but chatting with the others. So a good reflection on reality. And that thing of being an extra on Extras. :) Especially if you're shown as an extra in Extras in a extra scene.... I.... I'm lost now. :) It would have been great if Karl got to interview Ashley Jensen :) I would have thought the other extras (on Extras) might have known that Karl was a good friend of Ricky's, so that's why he got a line in the show.

14:47 Hanging around all day is part of the job description! 🤣 Apart from the fact they need to be ready on-demand, It would be far worse if they only get paid for the hour or so they’re actually being used haha. Yep, we need an extra for a 2 second clip, the shoot will take 10 minutes, 5 minutes in makeup, so we’ll pay you for 15 minutes work, £20 sound good? That’s not a living wage, I bet they charge a day rate for this kind of work.
@MandyCaneLane Жыл бұрын
But I meant 'extra work' as extra work. Not a full job but something people can do for extra money. And if you do get paid for a few hours of work you can even line up more than 1 job in a day.

Also the makeup for extras depends on the production I suppose, I did extra work on game of thrones a few times and spent hours every day in makeup and hair putting dirt on fingernails and teeth only to end up 5 pixels high in the background for half a second 🤣

(Schedules a dinner with Karl Pilkington and Mandy Cane Lane). I get why they announced Karl and what he was doing there, and the fact they're going to film him talking to them, and I see what you're saying. At the same time, if I'm one of those "told" to talk to Karl, it makes it more awkward, cause it was planned and forced, not natural and surprise. What do you say when told to speak to someone for the camera? How do you get passed "hi?" It would seem like a pretend and forced conversation, rather than natural with the excitement as a fan of the person. One would have to think up something, and go from there. Or hope that Karl asks questions, and it turns into a conversation. It's unfair to the extras that the producers set things up for everyone but them. Extras are the producers' employees, too. Feed them and give them a place to sit! It's like they were thinking "Oh, you're just the extra. Get out of here." I'm one of those who doesn't know ANYONE, so I would have to pretend to be texting, just like Karl was doing. But I'm glad I have Mandy to talk to everyday, in her videos. I like when the pretending looks real, like with Karl.
