Extrema Ratio Giant Mamba Field Review. The Giant Mamba is a new release for Extrema Ratio in 2020. A Multi-Purpose full flat ground modified Tanto designed knife made from N690. The Extrema Ratio Giant Mamba can easily perform not only regular cutting tasks but heavy duty tasks as well. A solid, yet very aesthetic construction, comprising of a versatile carry system, which with the knife, is available in a range of colour variations, including a black Mil Spec coating.
I took the Giant Mamba out into the field, cut up general food stuffs, carved, shaved wood/feathered, chopped and levered with this blade. Results, simply great!
Whilst I do not recommend using any knife as a lever, certainly, the tip of the Giant Mamba is almost as beefy as the Extrema Ratio ONTOS! At just under 6.5 inches in length, the Giant Mamba is easy to carry thanks to the M.O.L.L.E. carry system and the scabbard is easily cleaned due to it's construction.

Really looks like an absolutely incredible knife, built like an absolute tank. Thickness-wise it's identical to the Cold Steel 1917 Bowie, which is a *very* thick and heavy blade, also built to withstand a ton of abuse. I do love my bowie, but it's just stupidly big and heavy. This looks like it'll fulfill most of those needs in a smaller and lighter package, while not compromising on durability. As a matter of fact, this blade will likely outperform my bowie in durability, as it's N690 steel compared to the 1085 steel my bowie is made of. Plus the added benefit of being able to use it as, you know, a knife. The bowie is more of a pure chopping blade due to its immense size and weight, making it highly impractical for any kind of precision work. Thanks for the review!

They are the dullest blades i have ever bought totally blunt edge I know I could put my own edge on but for nearly £300 you would expect it to be as sharp as lionsteel or Fox 2 other Italian knife companies very very keen edges ...yeh I'm disappointed they look good to think for a slicer to light for a chopper

LOL, yep and that's exactly why I show cutting simple stuff like cheese with it because a knife has to e good to compete with a cheese wire LOL if your not going to mess it up and cut it thinly etc. I think what helps this design is the angle (I actually haven't measured it yet) of the blade and of course the edge geometry, but you saw, that bit of wood I was feathering in my hands, not resting it on the ground or against something, was some random piece (to make it as fair and honest as possible-not pre planned LOL; was done relatively easily with such a thick blade like this. I'll be making more videos on it as time goes by. But after just over a week with it now, it isn't disappointing me. Thanks for watching!

Great question and I was hoping someone would ask this. There is no doubt that my T4000S can slice objects more easily, simply physics here because the blade is much thinner, so for example if I cut a big tuber like a yam or sweet potato the T4000S is unlikely to split it before the cut is finished, however the Giant Mamba would due to the 6mm thick spine. This in practice isn't going to be a problem unless one gets too hooked up with food aesthetics around the camp site LOL but an advantage of the thicker spine is that you can more comfortable place a palm of a hand upon it and really deliver some cutting power, as apposed to if u did this using the T4000S, it may be a bit uncomfortable due to the 4mm spine thickness. Depends upon what you would be cutting up I guess. Of course too the T4000S has no gimping, and that's fine too. Some people don't like using the Mil Spec coated knives for food prep- probably worrying too much but that's not for me to say either way, but of course the blade of the giant mamba can be purchased uncoated. The Giant Mamba would def take a bigger "beating" than the T4000S, just due to the physical "largeness" of it compared with the T4000S. The scabbard is much better on the Giant Mamba, although they may have made a different scabbard since I got my T4000S?? There is another video on the Giant Mamba coming out soon and you should see it as it may address some of your questions. That review video was shot on a day hunting and fishing trip (we never got anything due to not being serious enough LOL) but today was different LOL!

Hi, great review!! between this giant mamba and the T4000S tanto blade in your opinion which one performs better? I know the T4000S has a thiner blade and makes it more manageble in terms of weight.

Yes the T4000S is going to be better for general food prep as the blade is just about right for some medium duty stuff but still thin enough for good food prep. By food prep I mean cutting up thick hard objects, like potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams, sugar cane etc. Yes you can cut into a coconut with the T4000S (I've done it plenty) but you should be careful. I wouldn't have any reservations using the Giant Mamba doing the same thing. (hopefully soon to show as well!). The thing I don't like too much about the T4000S is that if one undoes the top retention strap the knife can simply fall out of the scabbard. Now this maybe a good thing as in super fast drawing if used in combat (I wouldn't know) but that means one should be careful, I think. The scabbard on the Giant Mamba appears so far for my testing to be much safer in terms of the top strap does not need to be done up to keep the knife blade protected.

It goes under the handle. I've had it wet over several days now fishing and hunting LOL, I did take the handle off at the end of the first day and the tang was pretty much dry. I don't think it will be an issue. But yeah, it's a tight fit but not watertight.

Bush Camping Tools yeah, but the big „Blood Groove“ Running under the handle Is a Design mistake in my opinion. Some of the newer ER Knifes have that. Makes the knife less resistant to dirt, more difficult to clean and less hygienic in my opinion. The knife is very nice, but for me that would be a „no“.

If carrying the size doesn't matter then in skilled hands the Selvans will be king. Personally, I don't own one but it's really the ONTOS, a bit longer and bigger handle and I love my ONTOS!

No, someone else said they did have this problem or thought it could be a problem. For insertion, this has to be done in a certain manner and i think because many have asked about this now i will make a video for you guys about this because the scabbard has some interesting quirks if you like but it is good. Would u be interested in such a short video? I can only make it with the DMP right now as i don't have my GM with me but the system is identical.

@@BushCampingTools I like the blade profile, thickness, sheath/carry system and the overall simplicity of the giant mamba. What I'm having trouble with is the tang being held into the pommel/lanyard hole assembly by a tiny screw. Did you encounter any issues in that area? Getting loose or even snapping due to hard use? It's only because of this that I'm leaning towards the fulcrum. Function over form, first and foremost. Much thanks again.

@@rbskullleader The Fulcrum will be more reliable from that point of view. Although saying that the only way to put pressure upon that screw is for the blade to get caught in something and you try and pull it out. It would take a huge force i think to snap that screw. I did something a while back about if you lose the fixing bolt of the fulcrum you can easily put something else in it's place (unlikely scenario but it is mean to be a soldier knife and hence lots of redundancy built into it if feel.

Depends upon how one treats their tools. The Giant mamba will handle more abuse simply because it is bigger in all dimensions, however the T4000S will be more useful in practical hands, with a thinner but still capable blade. The Giant mamba will be more useful i feel for it's intended audience, ie military applications, where one may need to lever something with the knife, i say may?

Hi thanks for watching! The area behind the tip is thick, so it will never penetrate materials as that of something much thinner. Although on saying that it depends upon what the materials/objects are made from. For example, it could easily be put into the outer bark of an old oak and stick there in one go. 6mm behind the tip means whatever object it penetrates must be able to spread that distance, in order for binding. However, if it is just thrusting movement then the Giant Mamba is not heavy. Oh forgot to say, even though there is/are no guards (especially on such a design/Tanto-like) the grip if you are not familiar is very secure. Hope that helps.

The handle looks uncomfortable, but I'll take your word that it is not. I do not like Tanto blade shape. I prefer a drop point, clip point or trailing point, since it is more functional for tasks like carving, gutting, cutting, or even skinning while still allowing normal chopping/cutting. The tanto does have an advantage prying, as you have shown. Looks like a good chopper, a mini-machete (mini in length only). The sheath is rather unique, and I think it could be the most attractive feature to me. You review some interesting and different knives. Good job.

Hi thanks for your honest comments as always! Yes indeed a Tanto is not really suitable for any kind of hunting, maybe fishing stuff but would be a bit uncomfortable to skin with. I think one of my best selection of camping knives are my trusty hunting specific knives still. In regards to this knife, yeah it does have plenty of weight for some chopping. I easily cut some maple which was anywhere between 2-3inch thick (of course it was freshly felled-so not had a chance at all to season)-didn't show this on the video. I'm trying these days not to purposefully cut down trees for reviews, even saplings to avoid the negative feedback from the "environmental perspective) unless it has already fallen or it's had the chainsaw treatment :)!

There's a big difference of price between the Giant Mamba and the Fulcrum S (252€ for the Giant Mamba and 338€ for the Fulcrum S). Do you think there is a good reason for this difference or the Giant Mamba has a better ratio quality/price ? 86€ is a big difference.

Hi, firstly thanks for watching! I'm not sure one can make a comparison between the two knives as far as price goes. Certainly any knives which have had the Black Mil Spec coating (which must/should be done to military specification) has endured extra steps in production against a knife which has simply bee stone washed. The surface must be prepared appropriately prior to the blackening. The tooling times will be different because the Giant Mamba has a simple symmetrical tang, whereas the Fulcrum S's tang is asymmetrical. It's possible the assembly time is longer for the Fulcrum S, plus the cost of the Fulcrum S's carry system is far more elaborate in construction and materials due to its intended military applications. I'm just guessing all of this because I have no way to know what ER's (of course I would never be privy to this information, being confidential) costing is for production but I'd imagine this is what accounts for the pricing differences, although it may be somewhat dependent too on who is selling the products and their individual markups/margins employed.

If you would compare the Giant Mamba to the Shrapnel One, how would you differentiate between the knives in view of the tasks intended for bushcraft and other tasks like food prep?

Hi Andras, I don't think we could make a direct comparison because they are both different designs, however the Shrapnel One is very good at food prep plus it can easily be pounded upon due to a thick spine near the handle. So yeah it would be much better in that respect if i compared it to the Giant Mamba. Where the Shrapnel one lacks is that it has a very thin tip (so one must be careful using it). The Giant Mamba's tip is like a slightly cut down version of the ONTOS LOL! Also even though the length of the Giant Mamba is 6.24" long one can def chop a small tree/sapling down with it but this would be difficult using the Shrapnel One, this of course may not be important if one is carrying a saw or small hatchet for such a job. I. Sending mine back its the dullest blade I have ever bought and it was nearly £300 .lionsteel and fox knives are way sharper. I could put my own edge on if it can take a proper edge but its left a bad taste in the mouth..

Sorry to hear that. That's way crazy. I've never had such a bad knife from anyone let alone them, that would prompt me to send it back. It is genuine right? I mean you bought it from a legit dealer or directly from them? There are countless clones out there for sale and let me tell you some of those clones are very difficult to tell the difference.

Hi mate yeh yeh I got it from Knivesandtools in Holland after I stopped moaning like a Sheila I took drastic action and bought a work sharp ken onion powertool lol I do have a good knife collection not as good as yours but still respectable...but last week I bought a SRK in San mai but the same bloody thing happened blunt edge ,if I cut at a piece of paper it would rip halfway down ,then it dawned on me .......its not the knives its the sheaths dulling the blades so I took more action lol and with a small stick file took off some plastic inside the sheath and now the 2 knives are great no dulling when I withdraw them from the sheaths .I hope your on commission from these knife companies based on your videos I've bought 3 ,the mamba, the Fox Rimor ,lion steal m7 lol now I need to watch yer Axe videos I need a new one lol 😅

Those funny contours on the handle (I own many and have never slipped even when I was lazy and didn't wash my hands of animal grease) really provide a secure grip. I can't say for "baby oil" LOL but then I'm unlikely to get that all over the grip. I forget now but there was this great YT vid of a guy who designed his own knife via an explosive forging process (literally using explosives) one of his "Pros" in his marketing was to cover his hands in like baby oil and or soap and show how the knife would not slip at all LOL!

LOL, Ok now I'm going to have to give u the full story LOL. Automatic Seiko is a gift from my ageing parents- They insisted (like marched me down to the jewellery store, yes no internet shopping for them!) upon buying me another replacement dive watch after my faithful Citizen Eco Drive 200m diver bezel fell off so no good for diving any more; Ok it was like 20 years old. So i wear this out of respect for them still looking after their crazy son after all these years! The Citizen 300m diver is what i wanted to replace my 200M diver with but I could not find it of course in a small rural town shop and none for sale within the country over the net. Ok so I bought one OS secondhand (worn once for about ten seconds LOL) and wear this because it's also a watch I love. But as u may have noticed (maybe not, they are indeed at 2 different time zones). Only the Seiko has been diving as yet, both have been UW caving but yeah only the Seiko diving, no point in wearing 2 diving.

@@BushCampingTools I 'm sorry I had to ask. Good way to make conversation , by wearing both. Thank you for responding. I was going to start my own survival school , but my county came out and shot that down. They said I had to have electric lights from the house to the end of the course which was acres , bathrooms , covered shelters ,etc etc etc. I laughed at them ,and said never mind . We're talking big money $$$$$$$$$$$$ . I already own the land ,100% , house , etc . No rent a John's permanent heated ,cooled ones. Crazy. they even told me ,we'll be back to check on you. I should of cussed them out. They've been back too. Twice. Ever need a new idea or whatever holler at me. Or if you ever want to see a real bigfoot , I've got one on a trail camera on my tiny site. @@thebigfellar7178 Hiya back, yeah bureaucracy is such a nightmare! Too many forms, too little common sense. My folks once used to have tour groups visit their garden, then some council wackos decided that after some years of this (quite legally) that they must install a outside toilet and tar maced bus parking area (the bus drivers used to park in a huge paddock, no problems! Well of course this all cost a very large amount of money just for the sake of satisfying some loser with nothing better to do; unfortunately the outcome was no more bus tours, ok the councils loss as it brought tourism to the area.

@@BushCampingTools Yea they are just like you said paper pushers with an attitude . I have a great story about just that ,sometime when you have time . Best of all it's a true story. Where there's a will , there's a way. let me know Peace.
