Any tips on cheaper metals to look for, and to avoid?
@BushCampingTools
@BushCampingTools 2 жыл бұрын
I think avoid all knives hardened to HRC 60 and above if you are not prepared to spend time to sharpen them or keep them from going dull. I reality any knife steel hardened to HRC55-58 is more than good enough for working all sorts of things from the tropic to the arid regions (in my experience). Rather than use he word avoid, I'd say don't get hung up on marketing because some of these "super steels" are actually better suited for the knife maker than the actual end user. hence several can be machined and or worked whilst in the hardened state and do not have a requirement for heat treating again. that said N690 was developed as a milling tool steel which could be used at high temperature with out coolant and not lose it's temper. The addition of the element Cobalt helped to achieve this property, a property not encountered or of any use as an outdoor knife steel. None the less the addition of Co helps for hardness retention. You can of course harden to over HRC58 but then the stainless properties will become less as there will be less Chromium in solid solution to aid against corrosion. I think 14C28N is an excellent steel from Sandvik and I have several Spanish made knives using this, it's great. Böhler's K340 is one of their best renditions of D2; straight carbon steels such as Japanese SK85 is an excellent non- stainless steel for knives with fantastic edge retention and able to take a temper for maximum flexibility. The subject matter is too big for a quick comment by me but I e this sort of helps.

Hi they do for the most part but it is me who requests the models. The krieos has loads of publicity already so there isn't much I can do for them I guess. What I should have said was that for my time, I need to see what will give me the views here- which are not knife videos at all LOL!- and what my audience might like to see. With machete type blades, I think it could be difficult for manufacturers to try and sell "modern" versions which are many times more that locally made type ones which will still do the job. it would be hard to justify this to my viewers, whether I get one for free or not. But then again everyone has a different view of what is expensive and what isn't and to use the classic phrase (indeed I used it a lot during a stint in corporate sales, when I was challenged with: "it's too expensive!", my reply, "compared to what"?

Pro Tip: if for some odd reason you find yourself lost in the woods with only one knife, do NOT use it for batoning. Batoning is nice but never required and its not worth risking your knife, even if it happens to be an extremely good one.
@BushCampingTools
@BushCampingTools 4 жыл бұрын
Totally correct and like i say in numerous comments on this channel and my blog, batoning is a good way to destroy what may be your only useful tool (other than of course your brain) you have with you. I have in many videos spoken about this too. I do however sometimes show this as there are still many who want to see it but as i said I also say (maybe not in this video but certainly in my blogs) that it does not test anything about knife except maybe that if your knife doesn't break immediately, then maybe there are no defective voids or brittle fractures about to happen LOL. Hi there. I actually had one knife break (not from this brand). It was brand new and i hit a small sapling with it. My hand kept traveling as the blade stuck in the tree! It scared the daylights out of me as i was alone and no where near any roads and no phone signal, luckily no injuries. I examined the break under the microscope (I'm a scientist, so i can't help that sort of thing LOL)- brittle fracture surface; manufacturer tried to blame a nameless person on the assembly line for picking up a dud blade for assembly- impossible.

I like the design, and the fact that it's a flat grind. I sometimes think i am the only bushcraft guy that does'nt like scandis. But to me a flat grind is more versatile. Does the chimping on the top of the spine give you any hotspots? Only downfall is the price, for that kind of money i buy good bushcraft knives for the whole family, including the dog and the neighbor. Greetings from Vienna.
@BushCampingTools

Greetings back to you. I have enjoyed many a great coffee in your country! Ok now down to business. If ones hands are wet an gripping hard, it (the gimping) can rub (at least on my hands) between thumb and forefinger but I'm talking during say whacking a green coconut open, so a big task for a knife as compared to using a more appropriate tool such as a machete or parang. Despite this knife looking a bit like an kitchen knife on steroids, it appears to be from the social media posts, a very popular model from them and for good reasons because one can not only beat on it but also easily prepare food with it. As to the price, whilst I never discuss any products prices on the channel, I can not dispute your claim, it all depends upon one's disposable income and we all know that it is not necessary to own any knife when compared to sending the kids to school, college, university, fixing the roof or the car or the boat etc. I actually made a short video on this recently (several months ago, maybe you saw it?). I myself was even looking at another one recently on display in a shop (a satin version and looking very cool but I had to say, enough is enough).

I think they are both very good. I have only one knife in N690 which isn't coated and i can say it's corrosion resistance is every bit as good as my 14C28N blades. both blades hold a good edge. Both raw materials are from well-known manufacturers. I think it comes down to blade geometry as a decider but I would not be unhappy if all my blades were in 14C28N LOL. I used to think like this when I was for a short period working as Silversmith (to try and makes ends meet in my varied career LOL) and often people said, hey it's over priced but I tried to produce jewellery which whilst made from the same silver as the "cheapo" mass produced (in this case the comparison was being made to me about Mexican silver jewellery), my designs were arguably unique and certainly not mass produced, but that's another life and another story........

I really like ER and N690co is maybe the best stainless steel on the market! For me it‘s the best steel for knives if it got the right heat threatment. But ... ER is overpriced! I do not have any problem if a small company that is creating and factoring their products with care and a high amount of handmade craftsmanship is asking a higher price for their work. But is has to be more balanced. ER is out of balance with their prices. If they would lower their prices they would sell the double amount. @@BushCampingTools on that basis the knife is only of use to split twigs you can burn whole. Batoning is about processing sizable logs into split wood exposing greater surface area to combustion and seasoned wood. There is no advantage to it if the spines striking surface is only half the length of the knife as it cannot be struck efficiently at the tip to drive the knife through having embedded the spine, while spanning the diameter of the timber.
@BushCampingTools

I've got 10" walnut logs, 12" saw cut here and the other night I used a 4 inch fixed blade LOL to carve off about 6-10 small sections, lit those and carefully put those huge logs on them (OK the walnut was bone dry) and it was inside of a proper wood burning stove but hey, it worked LOL.

Are you referring to the fact that N690 was developed as a stainless tool steel to operate at high temperature without loosing it's temper and without lubrication, the reason that Cobalt is being incorporated into the alloy; hence no one operates a knife at high speed to generate high temperatures to make best use of the Co feature? I still think it's a good stainless tool steel. I think if it is hardened above 58, then it becomes difficult-well time consuming to sharpen- at least not in a hurry, that's for sure. I don't like talking about money as everyone has a different "disposable income" to spend on non essential items such as outdoor knives LOL however, I was thinking it was one of their reasonable priced knives considering it's fully made in Europe and now many Spanish manufacturers are also moving over to use N690 in their more "higher" priced models. @@BushCampingTools You're a ROCKSTAR. Love the detailed "in use" reviews. I've watched them all. I have a quandary, however. I'm looking for one Extrema Ratio for survival, carry, digging, chopping, etc. I trust your experience so which would you use? How about one of the folders??

Hi there, thanks very much for saying that! Ok, well survival, is a real big issue. I personally don't like folders for that sort of thing however saying this if you can maintain one satisfactorily in the field (ok I have taken them to deserted islands in the sea-so we really had to not abuse them). i would say the RAOII is your folder. U can def chop with it especially when the blade is locked open with the pin. The weakest link on this folder and even if it did fail, is the small spring, however, it is a quality spring and after all these years of using mine which gets out easily once a week if not more and sometimes, i'm not so clean with the mechanism, and the spring shows no corrosion at all (yeah i used a hand lens LOL!). The knife itself is very strong but compact when folded, you can use it for skinning too due to the blade shape. If you had to choose a folder for what u want from ER then i could recommend this. As for fixed blades from them. i have several suggestions.
