A simple and easy jig for cutting thin strips of veneer with extreme accuracy. You can also cut perfect squares of veneer for chessboards, parquetry, etc. This page shows some of the tools that I use in my shop: www.jack-bench...

Good basic technique, Charlie. I might add that drill bits make excellent spacers, as you can select 1/8", 9/64", 5/16" etc. from items you already have.

Thanks Tom. Great idea about using drill bits!

Very nice video. I need to cut 1/2" strips of fairly thick maple veneer and I think this will be just the ticket for me. Thanks so much!

Thanks for sharing that good demo. Two things. Firstly remind your viewers to make a chequers board using your method combined WITH the non-cumulative error method. Secondly, your method can be used for making Stripwood using a track saw. Just a little trick at the start is all that needs to be added to cut perfect Stripwood repetitively with a track saw - no special accessories required

Brilliant. Love the built in precision on the squares. I wonder if you have any tips for creating curves in veneer? Thank you for the education.

Thanks Michael! No general tips for cutting curves in veneer. Are you planning anything specific?

Great tip. I use veneer to cover cheap wood, usually plywood, on doors, etc. But the board that you held up in the beginning deserves to be hung on a wall as a piece of art all by itself.
@JackbenchWoodworking6 жыл бұрын
Hahaha, the board that I showed in the beginning IS hanging on the wall in my shop. I only showed that as an example of how/where you would use very thin strips of veneer. Thanks for watching, I'm glad you liked it.

I think ending up with perfect squares would depend on the initial long strip having at least one square corner to start with. Otherwise, you will end up with parallelograms. Do you have a jig to square the first corner?

Hi Charlie, Beautiful panel. When applying the thin black strip are you applying it directly over the brown veneer or laying adjacent to it?
@JackbenchWoodworking4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Joyce. The black stringing is in between the center panel and the mitered pieces that go around the perimeter of the panel. I tape all of the pieces together and press them on to the substrate all at once.

Hi Charlie, thanks for the video! I am shopping for a cutting mat, there are no stores near me (rural area), so I can't really examine or compare them. Do youmhave any recommendations? Which one do you use?

-4Carl, clever but the width is not repeatable, try using the back end of a new drill bit.

Try doing that method with Indian or Brazilian Rosewood veneer and repeating for several 1/8” strips. Your method will not work with veneers that have cranky grain. Your method is limited to soft straight grained veneers.

It's one thing to point out a problem. That's fine. But it's a lot more helpful to present or suggest a solution. A similar jig could perhaps be made to utilize a veneer saw instead of the knife?
