First of all I am happy that these guys were assisted so qickly and that there were no fatalities. Best of luck to the skipper with the rebuild, going through something like this can happen very quickly and no one is exempt from it. Thankfully the community at St Lucia is well equipped and experienced to deal with almost any eventuality it seems. Well done to all who helped the crew out.

Thanks for the positive comment Trevor.. much appreciated.. yes there is insurance for these type of mishaps.. the only drawback here is their holiday is now derailed.. many years ago.. these mishaps was a regular occurrence and not such a big deal.. now days with the price of the equipment and back lash from Social Media.. it became a real big issue.. Yes between Wiseman and his team and NSRI Station 40 in Collaboration with START the small community is geared towards these type of mishaps.

I haven't spoken to any of the crew to find out from them how they precieved it.. so if I tell my side of the story it will purely be speculation.. What we can see is.. the boat took on water while they where still facing the surrf.. at that point the current was going out very very strong.. if you on a boat.. it's like a land slide happening underneath you.. Then we see the skipper turn.. from the angle of the video we can't see if there was enough time for the manuver.. we can't see if the motors hit sand or not.. what we can see is the boat being in white foamy water will have less bouncy.. the motors won't have much propelsion.. what I call traction.. we can see the water flooding in from the back of the boat.. I assume at this stage the vessel was going to be pushed over purely by the slush movement inside the boat because it could not drain due to the deck angle... These Boats can self drain their decks as long as they have forward motion.. but with the tide from behind while still facing the ocean we can't see if the Boat still had positive forward motion or not.. What I have experience myself.. a water logged boat facing the waves don't capsize easily.. because of the boyancy under the deck.. What ever made this skipper turn is unknown to me.. but he did what he felt is best for his vessel and crew at time of his decision.. What could be done to minimise the risk of capsizing.. 1) Evenly Weight distribution with enough weight towards the back of the vessel to ensure drainage of the deck water at standing still 2) Positive Forward Motion irrespective of the situation. 3) More drainage holes from the deck.. Since all these conditions are argumentative and we weren't on the boat.. we can't declare a different outcome. Just points to ponder on.. And yes.. Respect to the Skipper and Crew to allow me to publish this..

Well done all. Very well handled. Being a skipper on inland waters and an angler on coastal waters this saying comes to mind 'always respect all waters especially the sea'. Be safe
@PetrusandPardette Жыл бұрын
To true.. not that this was because of any disrespect.. it's merely a cumulation of events.. what stands out for me is that they stuck to their safety protocol to hang on to the nose of the vesel and the vessel became a very stable safe platform to be with.. just because of the added weight on to the nose

Jip.. but which way is the waves when the tide is rushing out at 7km/h and the earth is moving under you faster than you are traveling.. in the same direction?

Why don't the people swim to shore?
@PetrusandPardette Жыл бұрын
Current to strong.. sometimes you can.. but not in this current.. they would've had to float another 1.6km North before they could swim to shore.. the extensive amount of water draining out of the Estuary at that specific time is like a river in flood.. if they stayed with the Vessel and get washed onto land.. it becomes dangerous if the vessel starts pounding onto the sand.. In this scenario.. they could have stayed with the vessel until it washed to shore.. they executed the right safety protocols.. it would have happened without any incidents.. but from their vantage point it they did not know that.. Also... sometimes a person get's trapped under the vessel and then the crew needs assistance to get such a person out.. since all communication is wet at that stage .. the people on the side would rather go and assist so everyone can know the exact situation the crew is subjected to .. Basically we always try and prevent the loss of life at all cost
