Crossing a Sand Bank is difficult enough when fishing the Deep Blue Oceans of the World.
Here in St Lucia Estuary iSimangaliso Wetlands Park KwaZulu Natal South Africa we also have to navigate waves while launching from the beaches.
Wave sets vary in direction, hight and interval. Sets with an Interval expected of 11 seconds and more generally create larger waves, but they are also slower and easier the navigate.
Waves comming at the beaches of between 7 and 11 seconds normally are very sudden and somewhat unpredictable. These sets needs to be waited out for a lull to appear. Most lulls are anything between 23 and 32 seconds and can be 5 to 15 minutes apart.
Most skippers loose there nerve after 10 minutes and either call it quits or make a dash for it.. it's when they make a dash for it that we start experience exiting launches.0
Crossing a sand Bank where there is no structures to the South of the launch site always makes for interesting launches. Water is generally shallow most days of the month. High Tide launches is accompanied with larger sets that wash over the bank, but also makes great saddles and lulls to navigate.
What makes St Lucia Estuary uniquely difficult is the waves are generally very unpredictable between tidal changes. These launches is adrenalin filled and very exiting.
Like riding a roller coaster.. but this is God's Roller Coaster.. unpredictable and somewhat dangerous.
