@@ricky.robert1196 .....respectfully.....you're a student pilot, in Canada, and this qualifies you to comment on on a commercial pilot's overall fitness/obesity, (arguably morbidly so) how? I'll concede he's a very bright fellow in addition to being a great pilot, because you say so....however, the facts,and the medical science are rather irrefutable: his health is compromised....and he's flying LEFT SEAT in a commercial aircraft!? Exactly!! There's really no need for cruel and mean jokes like that! If they knew anything about Aviation, you would know how brutally difficult it is to not only get one license, but to get 5+ licenses in order to reach the highest level of airmanship, that is airline pilot! Have some respect and acknowledgment for his accomplishments!!! Also, he's probably living a much happier, more fulfilling, more exciting, and more wealthy lifestyle then most people! So the joke's on you!

At 21:55 you can see the old No Smoking Fasten Seat Belt sign has a phrase in English, French, and Arabic. This is because when the plane was new, back in 1983, it was delivered to Royal Air Maroc. In Morocco Arabic and French are major languages. The -200 Combi is a great plane, I used to fly on one in and out of Nome, Alaska back in the day when Alaska Air was still flying them.

Sam, thank you so much for taking this trip and sharing it with us. I flew on this type aircraft from Anchorage to Galena, Alaska in 1979 and 1980 when I was in the Air Force. The airline was Wein Air Alaska. Our flight to Galena stopped in McGrath AK which at the time, had a gravel runway. I had no idea a 737 could do that without destroying an engine! Wein Air Alaska went out of business a few years later. I’ll bet that some of those old Wein planes are still flying in Canada today. Again, thanks for the ridealong.

No kidding. All the debate about the medical . . . He passed! And considering the possibility of the unthinkable . . . a pilot has died of heart failure overflying the US. If memory serves, it was safer to not remove them from the seat at the risk of, say, bumping the yoke and causing an even bigger problem for the already harried first officer. Though they are operating fairly far North, Churchill never looks to be all that far out of the way. The flight wouldn’t be allowed otherwise.
@NICU_Guy
@NICU_Guy 2 жыл бұрын
He can be the best person in the world, but his belly has to potential to cause an accident. The control yoke is connected on both sides. The first officer was unable to pull yoke any farther back due to the captain's belly. It is not disrespectful, it is safety issue.

He is actually having to suck in the gut so that the co-pilot will have the full range of the control yoke. If he had to pull the yoke all the way back for some reason, it would hit his stomach before getting to the actual controls limit restricting the flying surfaces which could be bad in an emergency situation. 737's may be different, but in flying GA aircraft when landing you want to always hold the yoke as far back as you can upon touchdown which helps slow the aircraft as well as making the nose gear touchdown softly.

Vincent Conti It can be considered insulting but remember this is an early 737 with a negligible autopilot, and in the middle of northern Canada. The seemingly unreasonable objection based on a pilot’s health can make the difference between a plane flying and hitting the ground. Even is the copilot takes over that pilot will be guaranteed to be dead if hypothetical heart attack leaves him in critical condition. Over 2 and a half hours to get to the nearest airport could be considered normal in that territory.

Ok out of all the videos I have watched this one was the best the best the best! As a kid I flew Frontier Airlines from SNA DEN MOT and always flew on a 737 1 and 2. I remember how loud it was if you were behind that engine but what a treat when you landed, that reverse thruster was the steal of the show. I like how the takeoff was filmed because you really get a idea of how fast that plane is going before it is air born. The sound of those engines too is just priceless, you dont get to hear that sound as much anymore, sometimes an MD80 or if your lucky a 727 Cargo. That was however a great Operation you shared with us Awesome!!

Amazing video. Love the 737-200 and those clam shell trust reversers. I flew Air California's 737-200's frequently back in the 70's. I will never forget a landing in San Jose one morning when my buddy almost had a heart attack when he saw the clam shell deploy upon landing. I will never forget the look on his face!

My Dad flies on these planes once every 2 weeks, he works for another Agnico Eagle mine near Meadowbank, in the same region of Nunavut. Great video! BTW another operation you should try to do a doc on is Air Creebec. They operate in Hudson Bay as well, and are an Indigenous-owned airline owned by the Cree of Northern Quebec, but also operate to the Ontario side of Cree country, to many reserves that are fly-in only. They operate some of the oldest Dash-8s in the world, originally built for launch customer Ontario Northland in the 70s, as well as Hawker-Siddeley HS-748 combi planes, which we in the region call "the Skid", and I believe are the last HS-748s operating in the world.

I love watching those bucket reversers pop out and back in. I rode in a lot of these and watched a lot of them take off and land. Many years ago. That there so few left makes me feel old.

Back in the '80s I regularly travelled on Nordair 737s to Thunder Bay. They were equipped with the gravel kits, but I only learned about their function many years later. If I'd known how they worked, it would have blown my mind -- as it does now. A wonderful video.

I just saw a Nolinor 737 at Pearson this week on the cargo side, and then this video comes out! Turns out there isn't a modern replacement for the 200's ability to handle those gravel runaways according to a pilot I spoke to. Hope to see these fly for years more.

When I saw 737-200 Combi I said "finally Sam gets to sit on a proper economy seat" he ends up getting the 2nd officer seat in the cockpit. Sign I'll never win. 😊

There is no "second officer seat." The 737 has never had a flight engineer. He's on the jump seat.

@@prorobo why is there a jump seat in the cockpit?
@prorobo
@prorobo 4 жыл бұрын
eWorkx it's there primarily for observation of the crew and can be occupied by a company check airman during a line check, an FAA inspector, or another airline pilot trying to hitch a ride when the cabin is full. Before 9/11, at the captain's discretion, anyone could occupy the seat like a child visiting the cockpit in flight. Those days are long gone.
