Pete, love watching your videos and the content you provide. Always a pleasure watching them. What I will say about this style of content is that your mind may be spread too far with this type of filming. Especially when you are free soloing routes. I can’t but have the feeling that if you continue this type of solo climbing while also doing the filming, that you will eventually film your own death. No shame in letting someone run the camera when your mind is focused on the task at hand. You don’t expect a surgeon to perform surgery and find his own instruments. His mind needs ti be focused on the task at hand. Please keep that in mind.

I just did a little indoor bouldering today and was very happy when I saw one at my level that started with a crack. First time i've been able to use a crack climbing technique that worked out. It was so much fun!

I went rope soloing yesterday and climbed a pretty scary crack. I experienced way more vertigo and nerves watching this video. 😂 So, I guess, well done!
@PeregrineBF2 жыл бұрын
I think the bifocal lens contributes to the vertigo. It reduces the distortion compared to a normal wide-angle lens, but when it gets close to the rock the line between the two focal lengths is visible and a bit nauseating.

Can't say I enjoyed the 360 camera. The way the camera moves made making sense of angles even worse than usual. For example at 3:29 when you walk up that edge, at first it looks like the edge is almost vertical, until the camera turns around and it ends up being a fairly gentle slope. And I don't know if fisheye lens effect is the correct term, but how the rock just stretches and shrinks when the camera moves put me off pretty hard. For a positive, this is the best I've been able to see invidual movements, especially for feet.

Loved this video! The POV style, the cinematography, the close up punchy bits where you’re putting your gear together, and your calm commentary are great. I really love the wide drone shots as well, I think those might have been my favorite. Feeling that sense of scale really got me. Only bit I didn’t like were all the cuts in the drone shots at like the 6 minute mark. But hell, what do I know! I’m not a cinematographer and I’m barely a climber! Beautiful video's, can't point out much that others have said already in the comments about the camera work. I do have one request: Could you do a video on why you want to solo climb and how you view the possibility of death? And do you let people know you're out there soloing so you dont get found after a week if bad things go down?

I realize that you are experimenting, Pete, so… I like the 360 camera if it could represent a move stable POV. I don’t know if the software can provide that, but if it could make for something a bit less like “Blair Witch Project” that would be great. 🙂 Appreciate your juggling effort regardless.

I liked that but it was very difficult to get a perception of how steep the rock was from the camera angles. There were places where it looked really steep but you were resting your palms on the rock and just padding up. Likewise the last few moves taken from the drone looked vertical but you appeared to simply walk up. Is it not possible to position the drone off to the side to see the steepness of the rock?

Awesome project to give your self and I think this is a great first effort, keen to see what experiments you make with camera angles and bringing us in to it more, I really like the 360 camera and the little zooms to show the focus of a move, foot or hand, was a little weird when doing sweeping shots on the 360 and the viewing perspective gets a bit thrown around, maybe make small cuts to reduce that or play with the speed to give an affective of focus from one perspective then a shift to another. Keèeen to see what comes next man :)

Nice dude! Personal preference: I liked the over-the-shoulder setup you did for Kjerag. I think the head-mounted option moves around a bit too much. Where did you mount the camera on the helmet? It looks like the front Gopro mount is empty.
@WideBoyz2 жыл бұрын
Both have their place I think, but I need a setup that I can rope solo some harder grades with, not just E3 and below terrain (which i kind of felt that Kjerag setup stopped at). As much as a backpack or shoulder mounted camera gets some really nice shots, unfortunately it's kind of diffcult to climb anything that hard with it. I mean it's possible,it's just a right pain having a pole sticking out from your back or shoulder 😅
@craglevcarboncapture2 жыл бұрын
@@WideBoyz Right on, makes sense. After seeing your behind the scenes video, I picked up a mount that connects directly to a shoulder strap that is pretty unobtrusive. I've rope-soloed at my personal max with it on and it feels pretty comfy. Might be another option.

Hi Pete, quick question. How do you manage the risk for these types of projects? I know this is very easy terrain for a climber of your level and previous experience, however there are still always unknowns. The filming for instance is one, I can imagine climbing with a GoPro attached to your head is not very natural, and something you might be quite new to also. Do you test this beforehand? And what about things like weather conditions or rock condition? Do you have a backup plan for when it starts raining (heavily)? And do you test all holds before weighting them? I suppose most of it is just relying on previous experience and acquired instincts however staying cool and composed when exposure hits is just unfathomable to me. Ok I guess it turned out as more of a chaotic interrogation then a quick question but I'd love to hear your insights on this.
