This stuff is really good for static climbers who get frightened easily, you have to trust and let go in order for your body to move well, any movement based in fear will be tight, stiff, inhibited and emotionally not coming from the right place. Emotions and mechanics work in harmony both have to be in sync for the body to really work.

Really courageous Hannah, allowing yourself to be that vulnerable so publicly. In doing so, that moment when your mind cleared and you just did the move with almost a "knowing" was an amazing insight into the climbing mind of Mr Johnny Dawes. So thanks heaps for what you do.

I'm only like 4 minutes into the video, but proprioception is such an underrated skill. Ultimately it's probably the most fundamental climbing skill, as it affects everything, but people rarely truly drill or train it. It's not really a surprise that many of those who excel at climbing come from dance or gymnastics backgrounds.

I do something similar to this when doing dynos: I "watch" myself when I do them. I'm not mentally hanging on and going for it. I'm just sitting back, in my mind, and watching. It prevents me from overthinking it and instead I let my body do the work.

I think that sometimes in climbing the psychological side takes over you when you are looking at a move on a climb, sometimes you just have those mental blocks of “I’m not sure I can do this move” and “I maybe am to scared to do” it so I think that confidence on the wall takes time. :)

I once heard him say (paraphrasing) in response to being asked if he's full of himself- he's good because he's explored what a human can be. I.e it's not unique to him, rather it's something that we're all capable of, but it requires a sort of serious commitment to play which most people don't want to do or forget to do as they grow up. And now a direct quote- "You can do all this pumpy pull-up shit, but you're still shit" Sometimes I think he is kind of chatting breeze, but then you watch him trying stuff like The Meltdown in 1985 and he just makes it look like art. Brutal art. But art.

Dinorwig Quarry, Wales. I was smoking a joint near the bottom of Desolation of Smaug when I over hear a conversation. Someone was trying to sell Beta to a route, I know sell it. The thing is though the punters were hooked and the salesman. a short guy in shorts and a flowery shirt and dark hair was pitching like nothing I've seen before. . It was a strange moment for me in climbing only once before has something came close, that was when a heavily bearded man approached me and successfully sold me three pairs of boxer shorts under the Neb roof at Shaftoe crags in Northumberland. I ended up meandering up Smaug and out of range to hear if our protagonist was successful in his pursuit, so I'm sorry for the cliff hanger (see what I did there). I heard Johnny has spent alot of time around there, so maybe he knows the rest

Johnny Dawes at 2:20 "If that was a Transit van I was trying to stop rolling down a hill, I'd press it like that" - I feel like there's a lot of hidden wisdom in this casual remark, about how, when thinking about how to do a certain move/sequence/problem/route, it's easy to have the tendency to think about how you would try to comfortably complete your goal... but sometimes how you would position your body/prepare your mind if you were pulling at 100% max effort is different to how you would do so comfortably at 70% effort, and sometimes you need to consider the 100% approach if you want to climb at your limit

"Look at your face from the inside". If anyone but Johnny Dawes had said something like that with a straight face, you'd laugh them out of the room. From him, it makes a weird kind of sense. What a wonderfully goofy man. If you didn't know this session was about coaching someone to climb better, you'd think it was a slightly esoteric kind of therapy.

Johnny should have a Nobel Prize for something by now. There is no other climber on the planet quite like him.

Ive been watching a lot of your videos these last few days, and it's really inspired me to start climbing again. Tomorrow I'm going to a climbing gym for the first time in four and a half years. So excited to get back at it. This is definitely such a unique way to think about climbing, and it's definitely something I'm going to try. I feel like I used to do this before I really understood technique.

I enjoy how (I think) he made you feel a bit uncomfortable/out of your comfort shell as he was in a way trying to explain to get out of our heads and just climb and let our body’s guide us. I think it really rings true as I know personally I have better sessions when I just play around on the wall and have fun. I usually walk away from my projects when I try to figure it out like a puzzle cause tbh no one ever does routes the same in gyms. We all have different bodies and we all intuitively move in our own ways. Love this different style of coaching!! ❤

This is what genius looks like. It’s not about doing what everyone else does, but better, it’s about seeing with completely novel eyes.

As someone just getting into bouldering in my mid-30's (6 weeks in atm) but who has a broader knowledge of movement and kinesthesis thanks to being a qualified PT with a decent level of calisthenics, this was a fascinating watch! Movement is instinctive and reactive, which is something a lot of people forget as they advance (be that with climbing, or any kind of movement practice). They get bogged down with worrying about form and perfecting every little flaw. Johnny clearly gets that and has managed to keep his movement playful and explorative. Sure, there are bad techniques that you probably want to remove from your practice, but the reality is that 'good form' is mostly a misnomer, since everyone moves differently, especially when it comes to such a dynamic movement practice such as climbing.

However without alignment none if it will work. That does need precision. Form is if anything the central idea mvp

I never comment on youtube videos - but gosh this was really incredible! I think this is the first time I have ever come across this energy and approach to climbing and I have watched years of content. The idea of moving with intuition, and that one already has intuition within oneself is such a strong thought. Thanks for a great video Hannah!
