I started this garage makeover while I was 6 months pregnant and we are finally at the phase where I can share all the finishing details! I love everything about it but am very interested to see the insulation for the doors. Did you deactivate them so they never open electronically? Always an issue whether to keep the doors or close it all up. I say keep them bc people look for garages when you want to sell. That’s why I am interested in how you tackled that issue. Margaret

Hi Julie 👋😄, just saw your metamorphosis of your garage, I say is gorgeous!!! I love the way you transform the entire place and make it into such a namaste, lively place! Everything has become so nice yet functional,with the flexi curtains, I love the ingenious way you use the bungee cords to go over the thicker pipes so the drapes can fall nicely into place, is really hanging so nice to give that unified look!!! 😍And the best part for me is the way you inject life into the garage by going to your beautiful garden and plucking the relevent branches and put in your white pots ....I like this part the best because this is so "you" , your eye for aesthetics and your special angle for designing makes you a very unique designer, I really appreciate you sharing your life and inspiration with us, from the bottom of my 💖💓 a big thank you and I cannot wait for part 2😁

@youbetcha108 there’s only one way to open the garage doors- with a manual code, so there’s no need to deactivate them Margaret. I wanted to fabricate open carriage doors, but the estimate was insane! So for now, I plan to add acoustical panels/ insulation to the back of them and change out the mechanics to a quieter motor that’s out of the way. Let’s see how it goes! 🤞🏻

Oh this is perfect timing! I’m converting my garage into my office space too. I plan on having a space for teaching small classes, and a very small kitchen nook. Looks amazing, great job!! Love how much more welcoming the space looks. For safety, we actually just replaced our garage gas water heater with an electric one. It might be safer to replace your water heater with an electric one so that you can safely sleep in your office without worrying about a gas/carbon monoxide leak 💕 can’t wait to see part 2!!

I am so happy for you Julie! Your office looks so lovely! I was a working Mom for years and the family always came first. I always wanted an art studio of my own, but all the extra space was taken up by our son who took over our spare bedroom(we only had 2 at the time) and he had toys and kids stuff everywhere. As our son grew and we saved our money we remodeled our basement and added a 10 x 11 1/2 bedroom and a 9 x 13 office/art studio for me. We put in large egress windows to flood the light in. Finally I had my own space! And It has direct Southern exposure. I have pretty sheer curtains and plants hanging in the window(they love it there!) Now when I am working in the studio and they pop in to see what I am creating my husband says huh? When he looks at my work and says looks good! My son is also supportive and says that is really good Mom. All I know is it is nice to just get lost in my thoughts and just create something... You need the peace and quiet to think... And yes many of us have garages that look like yours did. Mine does. We have been donating most of our stuff. You can really collect stuff if you are not careful. Our home is a 1965 ranch Mid-Century style home. It does not have the open ceilings(In our cold climate they tend to finished and fill with insulation), but it does have a big open floor plan(original for that era) from the kitchen to the formal dining room and a massive floor to ceiling fireplace with another fireplace downstairs in the recroom. Solid hardwood floors in the living/dining and bedrooms on the main floor. For some reason the original builder only put in 2 main floor bedrooms(the primary has its own bathroom) and a main floor bathroom. I think they preferred having a formal dining room. But it does have a partially finished basement. So I added two bedrooms in the basement and a full bathroom. We have an attached oversized 2 car garage with a door Into the house and a second door to the backyard. But to have adult space of your own is wonderful! After years of being a wife and Mom I feel like I finally have a place of my own. And it only took 30+ years... 😊

Julie, I can't believe my eyes. My favorite piece is your coffee table with the bows and the legs are so unique! Nothing anyone else has. I like the garage doors too along with the grey colors and the linen sectional cushion covers. I really like the industrial modern style. (Psst my master bedroom) I also like the real pieces of greenery, not faux! Please don't get rid of the garage doors, it really adds a Industrial unique look! You got me thinking…Our need - place to put unpaid bills, spot for printer and paperwork storage, comfy chair for zoom calls. I use tray on kitchen counter for mail (out of sight out of mind), 6x9 storage closet for desk for office supplies and printer, office chair (maybe I don’t need?), filing cabinet for taxes. I sit on patio, in LR, or at breakfast bar for zoom calls.

It’s interesting to me that as different as my and Julie’s styles & color preferences are, I find her ideas and suggestions very helpful & inspiring. I’m not doing a garage conversion, but just recently emptying my garage out, cleaning, and re-organizing to have very little in it, with space to park, how lightening & wonderful it feels. My plan is to paint, and add inside window detail (windowsills with accent color in higher gloss). Plus a trophy shelf and artwork. If it’s where we arrive home, it should feel welcoming and good.

It was time Jen! Yes, the storage area was carved out to conceal the clutter, desk is in a command position, A/C doesn’t blow towards anyone’s heads while seated, furniture placement opens up into the room. Feng Shui really just follows good design in my opinion. It was an easy application ☺️

Julie perfect timing i’m looking at making the garage into a space very similar to yours. Great idea about the electrical and really impressive about the garage doors with the curtain rods going across what kind and where will you be getting the acoustic insulated panels for the back of the garage doors? i love this!!!! This is literally on my list of things to do. Clean out my garage to make it my art studio! We are renting so I dont think I can put in an AC UNIT but i will figure something out. Its hot in TEXAS so I will need a solution for this.

Love the relatability and some key messages this video brings to your channel. I feel like 99% of your viewers can relate to all of this. They make garage door openers that bolt to the side of the rod. That would free up your ceilings. I guess if your hardly ever opening the garage doors. You could take the openers down altogether and you would have additional places to wire lights. Where’s your hubby’s space 🤔. Fun vid!

I hereby nominate this for my category of BEST EVER GARAGE MAKEOVERS! Many "successful" makeovers leave me wondering what became of items previously present in garage but needing to be stored SOMEWHERE. I love that you both acknowledged & provided for this necessity...plus DOWNSIZED! My only question is will it be comfortable thru the seasons without overhead insulation? Is there a "mini-split" &/or solar panels for climate control/ comfort needs?

Thank you SO much Mari! The entire home has exposed beams, no insulation in the ceiling as it’s part of this mid-century type of architecture. I live in SoCal, it’s been a non issue for me ☺️
