THe HECU were called in to clean up Black Mesa. Eventually, the Vorts, Grunts and Gargantua overpowered them and forced them to retreat. The Combine saw this alien attack as an advantage and attacked shortly after the destruction of Black Mesa. Weakened by Plack Mesa, the HECU were a bit short on the battlefield, and coupled with the sheer terror, surprise and strength of the Combine's Biosynthetic war machines, it's clear why they lost.

HairyViking, the combine overwatch was created after the 7 hour war. Basically, the combine soldiers are humans modified into synths. Also, the seven hour war was lost because of the combine non- earthly synths including striders and gunships. They were too strong

I guess one reason for the difference in strength could be that in HL2 you generally had to face more enemys at once than in HL1 because the technology couldn`t really handle that many things at once back than so to make the game still challenging the mobs did more dmg. another reason could be that the mobs are not on the same difficulty level in this ( maybe HL1 mobs on hard and HL2 onyl on normal...).

For all the non sense comments even to this day he did not use all of the strongest half life 2 npcs like the strider, gunship, dropship, advisor and the antlion guardian for example it would have been fair if he did so, he added aswell npcs that didn't have made it to the final version of half life 1 like the heavy weapons grunt for example and the baby gargantua that is not in the game aswell and if he's going to use beta npcs he might aswell add some of the beta half life 2 npcs like the combine guard that could fight the heavy weapons grunt or any other because it is very strong or the combine assassin for example

It was because millions of combine soldiers coming through the portal at one time outnumbered and overcome the Earth forces with ease as the Earth's military was completely unprepared for the assault

I love how many creatures there are in the first game and it really sells the feeling that Earth has truly become overrun by them in the future. The only genuine problem I have with 2 is that there's just barely any Xenian lifeforms around and I obviously know the Combine is the main antagonist of the game that should be focused on, but Xen is also a third party between them and the humans which is a serious issue for the two. Antlions and headcrabs are the only Xenian enemies and the fast as well as poison headcrabs don't count because they are simply just different variants.

Combines were defeated because of their aim, in Gmod it is set to "average" wich is the "easy" difficulty equivalent combine in HL²... :/ Also poison zombie OP ftw !

It's only cause the combine's aim is set to a very easy difficulty, that's why they suck in Gmod, but otherwise they do a lot of damages in HL² in hard diff.
