Ill tell you how strong they are. My clutch fork of my subaru outback 2002 was once broken, so i was stuck in 1st gear (was able to shift very gently without clutch). But in order to start up, i had to just crank it in 1st, and the starter literally pulled the entire car fprward, then the engine fired up once i was rolling hahah, had to do that multiple times, as coming to a stop at a traffic light meant it would stall lol

Such cold start take +50000 km of car mileage. I live in Russia and do not use a car at temperatures below -35. Starting a car is not a problem. But all rubber compounds harden in such frost, it is dangerous. Engine oil solidifies and for the first 5 minutes hardly lubricates the cylinder walls.

Seen this occasionally happen to Subaru's, bad airfilters and/or lack of oil changes causes the rings to gum up and suddenly one day you'll go to start them and they'll have zero compression. I have been able to eventually get them to start after cranking with what sounds like a broken timing belt for 30s; seafoam and a bunch of redline pulls up to 100mph later the car was back to normal and didn't loose compression again. I can imagine that bad fuel injectors not properly atomizing the fuel have something to do with the failure to start in this video too.

Well u can clearly hear that the knocking sound doesn’t follow the rhythm of the engine. It could be some heat shield that’s come a little loose. When the engine is cold and running at high idle and also varying idle the vibrations are more frequent and a lot different, therefore heat shields and other thin metal parts may rattle.

In temperatures like that the engine oil needs to be 0W/20 to help the starter spin the engine over faster, there should be no necessity for it to spin over for so long before firing up,my diesel BMW 3litre diesel fires up within seconds no matter how cold it is but I always have 0W/30 engine oil in winter conditions and 5W/40 in summer and never have a problem. Changing the oil twice a year means the engine is spotless inside with not a sign of sludge even though I do a lot of stop start local journeys.

I've found out that if you have good fuel with cetane booster, good plugs and injectors and good oil - aka a well maintained car - any car will start no problem in any weather. My trusty old W245 Mercedes 2.0 diesel does 1-3 crank rotations summer/winter/anything in between and never fails to start first time. But as soon as you neglect your car - you can sit there cranking for a while and change a starter and battery every 2 years.

A nice tip for people with a remote start: Use it when it's cold outside. I noticed that starting with the remote start is easier than when you're in the car because all lighting and electronics stay in "sleep" mode until you actually enter the car. If I had to put a number, I would say I get around 20% more starting power when using remote start.

My cars 17 years old even with the car plugged in and a good strong healthy battery it still struggles in temperatures below -25 degrees Celsius. I once attempted to start my car not plugged in sitting g for 3 days in -35 degree Celsius weather and it was so cold my dash lights came on so slow the fuel pump barely primed all the door lock barley worked all the buttons on the radio were very stiff. My headlights and dash lights would not come on the relays were so cold some were not working properly. I started the car and it started but was making lots of noise and the RPMs were struggling that’s how cold the oil was I shut car off right away only ran probably 10 seconds and I said nope not driving today. Plugged car in and didn’t use it until weather warmed up a bit. From there I knew my cars limits anything below -25 is not ideal unless you plug the car in overnight.

The 5 cylinder audi started easily because it has a 'cold start' valve. It's an extra fuel injector that adds more fuel on cold starts. Ironically, it starts much better in cold climates. I had two of these beasts, with the mechanical fuel injection that would refuse to start after driving, and in hot weather. On one of them I had to pour a bucket of water all over the engine to get it to start. Eventually that car caught fire from cranking so long and forcing the throttle to make it run lol. I still drive audi :p 01 s4.

When showing cold starts in the beginning of the video, I try to show a more unusual/rare car like this R8, then focus on colder and colder cold starts. Also, for a high strung sport engine, -10 can be pretty rough already. It's very hard to find -35 and below videos, when it's that cold a) many cars are preheated b) many cars won't start at all :D c) people won't bother with filming because it's so cold, and some phones die within 1-2 mins of being exposed to -40C :D d) people don't even consider filming it and consider it a nonsense because they don't care about the technical aspect and just treat the car as a house appliance e) other way round, people leave the car alone because they realize how hard it is on the engine to start it without preheating AND with wrong grade oil for the temp

Do you know on what diesel engine drivers should be careful in winter and on these temperatures? They need to pay attention on the control checks in public city transport.

Why would you leave an R8 out in the snow? It should have a cover at least.
