For those who don't know what hydrolock is. When water is sucked into your engines combustion chamber and water cannot be compressed, it will cause the engine to lock-up. If this happens do not try to start your engine. Have it towed to a mechanic they will check for damaged parts, ie. cracked heads, bent or broken conecting rods blown gaskets, ect. If no damege is found they will change the oil, dry the intake system and drain and clean the fuel systam. Bottom line is it's much cheaper to find an alternate route even if its 100 miles and half a day out of your way.

Tunnel vision probably comes into play just focusing on the water. Myself I just wouldn't enter. We have one about two miles from where I live and could save about four miles as a short cut. I've never had the inclination to use it.

So many drivers do not know how to negotiate deep water, must be at slow speed keeping the revs up and not create a bow wave that will swamp the engine but for some reason they seem to have the need to go fast. It doesn't work and if it does it is more by luck than judgement

Of course this is covered if you have comprehensive insurance. If you only have collision or liability coverage then it’s not covered.

There should be no cost to insurance companies. They don't pay out for hydro locked engines the same as they don't pay out if you blow/seize you engine running it low of oil. Breakdown recovery organisations like , AA , RAC, Green Flag etc will not enter water to recover a vehicle, that's why you see local recovery operators dragging the scrap vehicles out of the water.
