This song is a reminder that good music doesn’t need to be complex. A couple of good voices and a guitar can hit just the spot as easily as an orchestra or choir ❤️
@MattSilvermanMusic3 жыл бұрын
@jasper426 I understand and agree with your sentiment, but I must say the guitar part is quite complex! I teach this song from a highly accurate transcription. All of the little details in the guitar part are so deliberate, I would compare it to learning classical music. It's hard to describe, but usually pop/rock acoustic songs have an element of randomness; to get the right sound you have to play freely. The guitar part in this song is fascinatingly calculated.

I heard this song 1000 times in the 90’s. In my teens, I thought it was a corny love song and “unhip.” But now it means more to me. It reminds me of a bygone era, when things were a lot simpler.
@jaerivus3 жыл бұрын
100% what you said. I was perhaps a few years younger, but (like so many great songs of any Era) it was overplayed on the contemporary pop stations, and I groaned every time it came on. Now, with considerable distance, I can see it for what it is. One of my top favorite songs of all time, both to hear and to play on the guitar. As a side note, it's so incredible to me how they took some of the most standard chords ever (G, D, Em, Am7, C, Bm) and made it something that I've had to study to get right, many years into the game. That fingerpicking rhythm is totally inspired and like no other song!

This is one of the most profound love songs ever written. I've always been a huge fan of the expression "Actions Speak Louder Than Words". You can tell me that you love me until you're blue in the face but that doesn't make it true unless you show it with actions. It's about what you do, not just what you say. Anyone can say the words "I Love You". Show me...

Most of you people got this song all screwed up. It has NOTHING to do with sex. It is about how those three words are overused in today's society. There are so many ways to show love for someone just in the things that you do, the things you say, respecting each other. I learned that lesson the hard way. Looking back on that 27-year-long continuous train wreck of a marriage that I am greatefully out of, I can see so many things that I could have done better. It is good to here someone say, "I love you", but do they really show that love in the everyday things that they do for each other, showing respect for each other, just holding each other while watching a movie, or just talking to each other openly and honestly, and respectfully. Sex is ONLY ONE WAY to show your love for someone. There is a hell of a lot more to a relationship than that. Had my ex and I done those things and kept Christ in the center of our marriage, things would have turned out differently, But, alas, we were both a couple of screwed up people. I've learned a huge lesson from the past.

Also interpreting this song to be about sex tells us something about how sex-focused our ideas about dating are. To me, being in a long-term relationship is not about sex but instead about learning how your needs and preferences differ; where is your common ground; and finding out a way to live together but as separate people.

I heard a perfect explanation for that effect: when you feel any kind of emotion(s) with a song (sadness, love, happiness, etc) that song becomes part of your life's soundtrack. It happens to me with many songs (this one included). A simple experiment to prove what I'm saying is: put a kid to listen to this song. Allow me to anticipate possible answers: 1. "It's old men's/women's music". 2. "It's boring". 3. He/she may get asleep. 4. He/she will ask to stop playing the song. Why? Simple: they didn't grow up listening to this masterpiece.

The beginning of this song always confused me but now I realize I was just interrupting it wrong. What I thought he was saying is "It's not that I want you. Not to say, but if you only knew" but what he is actually saying is "It's not that I want you not to say it but if you only knew". Makes so much more sense now. "Saying "I love you" is not the words I want to hear from you. It's not that I want you not to say it but if you only knew".

In my family, it's an unwritten rule of sorts that we never say "I love you" unless your actions can back your words. Words are empty and cheap. Actions are what define you. That being said, I have only told two girls that I loved them. And I meant it.
