Extreme Pain After Chiropractic Adjustment | Dr Paul Groulx Chiropractor in Ottawa
Today I got a message from a patient who reported to my assistant, Judy, that after her last chiropractic adjustment visit with me she was in “extreme pain”. I’m always a little disappointed when that happens, but here’s the thing…
I wasn’t surprised.
Maybe you’ve heard of someone that went to see a chiropractor and they reported something like this, “I went to see a chiropractor once. He adjusted me and my back pain got worse.”
Does this sound familiar?
I’m the first one to admit the chiropractic has had a bad rap for many years, and in a lot of circumstances, it’s well deserved. One of the consequences of people being nervous about coming to see us is that people wait until the last minute to come and see us.
That always leads to more pain and suffering…here’s why.
Instead of a problem being new and acute, people will try various other things without having the root problem corrected. What that leads to his chronic inflammation and scar tissue formation.
Now the chiropractor enters the picture and starts introducing movement into joints that haven’t seen movement for decades.
The normal response is that your body will resist these changes. About 70% of new patients will experience some worsening of symptoms before they feel better. That’s normal. It’s expected.
The good news is that it’s temporary.
Linda came in today and reported that indeed she was in a lot of pain after her last visit. My job was to modify my technique and use an adjustment style that is very gentle and perfectly suitable for her scenario.
Not all chiropractic techniques are the same. Some are very “obvious” and deep. Some are very subtle.
What I did with Linda today is I switched to a very subtle technique and the results were almost instantaneous when she got off the table. She felt a whole lot better.
Immediately.
The take away is this. Don’t wait another minute.
The longer you wait the more scar tissue develops the more inflammation accumulates and the harder it will be to correct in the long run.
Acting sooner means being able to get back to doing the things that are important to you. Things like going to the gym so you can stay fit and feel good about yourself.
Acting sooner means less frustration and irritability.
Acting sooner means getting back to who you really are. Not so tired all the time.

Some discomfort is normal...but barely able to walk isn't. When my patient spoke of "extreme pain" it was relative and it turned out to not be so "extreme" after all. Ihope you bounced back.

Hmmm, hard to say. Always best to consult back with your chiropractor. If what they say is reasonable, then follow their recommendations. They are pros and most will give you the straight goods.

No previous back pain or any pain - never injuried Healthy and very active 28yr old female and 10 weeks pregnant. Chiropractor states need adjustment after assessment. After two days have bad pain in lower back with touching toes, arching back while laying down or standing, and sitting up in bed from a supine position. Should I go back? Is this normal? Any tips?

Sorry I missed your comment. You must be around 22 weeks by now. I hope you went back to inquire. Yes - this can happen. On occasion an adjustment can go a little deeper than we wanted but it is a matter of making some minor changes the next visit when appropriate. The best person to ask is your chiropractor. If for whatever reason, you don't feel comfortable going back, consider consulting with another doc who sees a lot of pregnant moms to be. In my experience, a good number of female chiropractors (a huge generalization) like to focus on moms and babies...maybe their technique would suit you better. Final notes. 1. Check out another video on my chanel about adjusting pregnant moms to be. It can be very gentle. It SHOULD be. 2. In my experience moms who receive chiropractic care throughout their pregnancy have fewer complications and shorter, easier labor and deliveries. Would love to know how you are doing

Thank you for making this video. I've had a constant headache everyday with a whole bunch of other scary symptoms for 8 months straight and I finally decided to go see a chiropractor for my first time a month and a half ago. Got xrays taken and found out my C1 is badly out of alignment. So he adjusted it there the first time, my symptoms diminished a lot! Then a week later, I went back, and again, seemed to be improving. But this last one, a week ago, wasn't the same. This burning headache, with facial pain Is back full force! I'm so scared to go back again this Friday dec 8th. Why would the first two adjustments help, but not the third? Any advice would be appreciated.

Sorry I didnt see this earlier. Occasional worsening can happen. It's normal. A dangerous symptom in this case could include; sudden onset of a headache (like a thunderclap), weakness in your extremities, slurred speech, visual disturbances balance problems...the more of these you have at the same time, the more concerning it would be. Did you have facial pain at your initial visit? Where in your face? Keep in mind I can't properly assess you over YT but the best step is to go back and have it reassessed. If your symptoms accumulate (the ones I described above) then a visit to an ER could be warranted. For all the fear people have about what we do and all the stories (mostly recycled and embellished) we pay next to nothing in malpractice insurance. Why? Because chiropractic is safe. Would love to know how you are progressed.

Hiii I hope you see this but, iv been going to a chiropractor for 2 months because iv had a really bad hip hike that gave a 2 cm leg decrepancy... abs this time it really gave me bad pain in the back of the knee... like sharp pains and shooting is this normal?
@DrPaulGroulx

hard to say Rachel. Sharp shooting pains sounds like a nerve being pinched or something inside the knee being pinched. Your clinician will be able to help.

How long did her pain last?

Just a few hours. I saw her again a few days later and she was doing great. Inflamed joints "complain" at the onset of care. It is to be expected.
