I use a label maker for the fridge and freezer. It helps people know where to put things. I also try to arrange according to my grocery store aisle. They have spent tons of research into where to put things. Why reinvent the wheel? And I’m still in the old have a list to write down what is used up.

Have you thought about getting FIFO shelves for your can shelf? I got some 10 or 12 years ago that are cardboard, but they have kept the can clutter down.

I just batch my lunches..... if you do a family size meal and put it in individual food storage, pull one out of the freezer each day, do a couple and alternate for a couple weeks.

Plastic magazine holders (mine's a "book" one from Walmart back to school lol) for that flattened soup. Weekly snack bowl on the island or counter for the opened/close to expiring stuff ❤️❤️

For your opened bags of snacks and tortilla chips, get the clear containers. Things can be seen by all family members and you can keep track of what you're low on. Also do a once a month fridge/freezer/pantry challenge. This is where you only buy what you're missing for a particular recipe. You have leftovers one day a week and at the end of the month you take stock. It's easy to see what you use and don't . Then don't buy those things that you never used.
@amberbryan64883 жыл бұрын
Our saving grace for our pantry is we actually started keeping our snacks in a storage cabinet in the garage and every family member has a Dollar Tree organization basket in the pantry for snacks. Saturday morning, we stock our baskets for the coming week out of what is in the storage cabinet. It reduces the mess the kids make and I can make sure they don’t survive on nothing but chips the whole week. It also helped with inventory as I can now keep a much better track of what we have.

We used to have CORN for dinner about once per week. Clean Out Refrigerator Night meant we would choose from whatever leftovers were left from the past week and put together funky combinations. My kids thought it was fun because they got to “choose” what they were going to eat instead of eating what I had planned for the family. I liked it because that was a meal I didn’t have to plan for or cook!

Suggestion for pantry door. There's useable space there. You could do an over the door storage like you did on the hall closet. Then you can put your bags, plastics, paper products. You could just get an over the door wire rack just to hold the baggies. You could use command hooks turned sideways and use the end holds on the baggies and other boxes (foils, wax paper, saran wrap. etc.) to hang. Good vid as always. I too in my days had a family of five. Watching you makes me wonder how on earth I got thru it on a daily basis. I certainly can feel where you come from as a mom.

Retired homeschool mom here!! (over 22 years!) I plan a month at a time, too and do the themes. Gosh it makes it so easy!! Sunday is Soup Sunday for us, at least until spring. :) We have taco Tuesday which translates to various tacos/fajitas/mexican. We have take out Monday and grab food for my parents while we are out and stop by and eat with them. (that's my grocery shopping day, so I don't need to think about cooking) Wednesday tends to be crockpot meals or a new recipe, Thursday is baked/roasted meat with roasted veggies, Fish Friday and Saturdays are usually an oldie but goodie. Great video.

Our 60 year old house doesn't have any pantry at all! Tiny kitchen too. We added shelves in the utility "room" (I say in quotes because it's connected to the kitchen and about 4ftx6ft) for pantry storage, including putting our microwave, toaster, and other things like slow cooker and kitchen-aid mixer out there.

i make a meal plan with a calendar too. I pick a night for chicken, beef, pork, fish and pizza. One night may be leftovers or soup. That is 5-6 meals easily planned each week. One might be tacos, one might be meatballs, one night might be burgers etc to change it up through the month. The good thing about using a calendar for meal planning is that when you dont' know what to make, you can refer back to a different month for a change of ideas! When I try a new recipe, I mark on the calender if it was a hit or fail to remind me to make it or not.

Love Eric's meal planning suggestion - cheese AND mac and cheese! 😆 Thanks for sharing the info about the calendar, it is pretty! Have you considered getting some sort of over the door hanger or other holder for the plastic wrap, baggies, etc to put them on the door instead of valuable shelf space? I live alone and have been thinking about meal planning but it always seemed so daunting and sort of pointless for one person, but then food goes to waste when I forget about it. I like the way you do it, seems easier to do that way. Thanks for the great video! 👍 Freezer tip from my parents - they keep a list of everything that is in the freezer taped to the outside of the door and as they use things they cross it off the list. They update the whole list whenever they run out of space on the piece of paper.

This allowed me to get an elfa shelf (from the container store - $$$ I know!) for my door. It add so much functionality to my pantry. 4 bedroom house with a “walk-in” pantry that’s about a foot of walking space. It’s bigger than yours, it’s reasonably functional. It’s not perfect, but massively better than the pantry at.a friends home or a lot of apartments that I’ve seen. How we made it more functional was we got a wire drawer sliding basket system from ikea. Plastic wrap, foil, ziplock bags etc go in there along with the onions & potatoes. I would find an organization piece for your pantry door. Perhaps put your foil, bags etc on there.

For my foil, plastic wrap, and freezer bags I used the cardboard magazine holders from the dollar tree. I put 3M velcro command strips and stuck them into the inside of my cabinet doors. The box of freezer bags that's too big to fit in a drawer or the magazine holder, I take the bags out of the box and leave them rolled up standing up in the magazine holder. The foil and plastic wrap keep them from falling over. It's the only solution I found for storing those types of things because my kitchen has super tiny drawers!

Twice a week I prepare nothing special, we eat the stuff that needs to be eaten.But I try to be clever and I dont tell it my family. I just wait and prepare the food for an hour later than normal. And I put everything on clean plates,so it looks nice on the table. An hour later everybody is more hungry and not complaining about the food. My daughter has to take a bath before, so she can sit in her pyjamas and eat. So this feels comfy too. Try it, perhaps it work in your family too. 😂🤣

We don’t typically have pantries in the UK. I have one pull out cupboard and a carousel with cans and that is more than enough space and I cook a lot from scratch for myself. The other half mostly eats processed stuff unfortunately so my fridge gets full often. Freezer is always a struggle as I like to batch cook. I’d definitely need a second freezer with a family of your size. I try to have a meal plan where all the meals use similar ingredients so I have less inventory to manage. The first job I do is check what I need to use up in freezer/fridge and use those first. Those little things have really been life changing with my eating/health issues!

We live in a three bedroom house our house is very small though I would say the bedrooms two of them are on the small side and then one of them is a long attic bedroom that goes the length of the house. And then on the main level we have a living room and a kitchen and two smaller bedrooms and a bathroom and then there's like a porch sunroom that doesn't have heater air conditioning but we use that as a playroom. I have a 5 bedroom house with no pantry and it's seriously disappointing. One day when i have the money I will build one in. Just like you, we questioned the builder on a lot of things in this house. Reason why we ended up with it though is it was the cheapest house with the biggest square footage.
@Karen_Busch3 жыл бұрын
I just commented the same thing. I love my house except for thr kitchen/dining area which seems to have been an after thought... I can just hear the builder, "Uh, don't you want a kitchen?" Oops. 😭🤣 My house is 2,900 sq ft with 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. We don't even have space to add a pantry even if we wanted one. 😭 Even the fridge isn't a standard size because the cutout only accommodates a special order fridge size. It isn't a small one but it isn't standard either, it's in between... the stores don't even carry the size we need as they are special order. It took 5 weeks to get our fridge when we moved in!!! We use the closet space in our office as pantry and some of the built in cabinets in there as well... its 2 rooms away from the kitchen. For our next house we will know better!!

@@emilyr1702 What's crazier is this house was built in the 1970s but remodeled and added onto by the former owners who owned a construction company!! 😮 🙄 I don't know what it looked like before they remodeled it, but I imagine that the nook where my special order fridge goes was maybe a shelf pantry... but there are zero bare walls so then where was the fridge? Hmm. Idk. When we bought this house we only had 7 days to look for a house... I was a teacher on Spring Break and we were moving here to Missouri from California. We saw 10 houses and each one had lots of odd quirks. This one was the best fit. We settled, unfortunately, due to the time constraints and pure exhaustion. You should have seen some of the crazy houses we saw! 🤣 Our pipe dream is to have a home custom built. We moved around a lot as renters and then this is the 2nd home we've owned... with experience comes wisdom... we know better next time. 😉

I have a pantry the full width of the kitchen and about 4 feet deep. Absolutely love it. When the three kids were home it bulged. Now I have empty space.

Just commenting to feed the algorithm... the people need you! You seem to be doing all the right things (like putting different categories of food in zones) so, as long as very little goes to waste, you keep doing you. You might like those big clear bins from Walmart that Frugal Fit Mom raves about to contain lighter things like all the chips but I'm not super into that or decanting.

Wow you made my day! I have been searching for those containers! My Walmart doesn't have them and they only have a small version online. Or at least one that looks smaller than the ones she has.

My dad always asks me what I watch on KZbin so I told him videos of people cleaning their kitchen and grocery hauls. He was like what 😂 I just love them went from the toxic beauty community to more wholesome useful for me content lol. I need to clean my freezer. Feel like I do it so often and it always ends up the same. Now I know what I need to download on Alexa.

I have a feeling you and I are a lot alike. I started out watching the beauty community too, but I can't watch around my kids because of the language and vulgar topics. I drifted onto cleaning-tube and having looked back... I even joined, lol. I still keep my eye out for more wholesome beauty content creators like Tati, so if you have any recs let me know!

@@LeafLikeOnATree love Tati as well, and Taylor Wynn. Taylor Wynn is probably my favorite right now!

Our current house has 5 bedrooms and a small closet pantry, like yours but it was built in 1970…so who knows what kind of standards they had?? We make it work. The only time I had a walk in pantry in my adult life was just before I got married and was renting a townhouse with a friend. It was the best!!

We had a walk in pantry growing up, but in all my other homes it has been a small closet or only kitchen cabinets.

Separate the onions 🧅 from the potatoes 🥔. They make each other ripe faster. Love from Germany to you 🤗.
