As a busy mom, my pantry can be neglected at times. I finnaly took the time to purge and declutter EVERYTHING! To fall clean includes the pantry too! I'm definitely making pantry clean out part of my cleaning routine as a working mom. This is the kind of home improvement I love. All of the organizing baskets came from dollar tree. Thanks for watching!

OK, here are some tried and tested pantry organization hacks. 1. Buy storage containers for dried goods (flour, rice, beans, sugar, etc.) and put all your dry goods in the jars. Label them and put them on a shelf. 2. Don't buy presoaked canned goods like beans or lentils. Dry goods last longer, are more versatile to use and generally less expensive. 3. Do a pantry challenge every 6 to 8 weeks. This means no grocery shopping for an entire week, just using up what you already have. 4. Check your pantry before each grocery shopping trip and actively plan the goods you have into your meal plan. 5. MEAL PLAN. Like really. Plan your meals and your shopping list accordingly. It keeps you from impulse buying things that will just end up in your pantry and never be used. That's what I started doing and it worked like a charm. Good luck.

Yeah Gia thanks for putting it all out there and getting it done. We viewer moms we are so used to seeing the perfectly organized home that is already clean but being cleaned again. I'm the minimalist of the group and I have really enjoyed giving away 2 car fulls of stuff. I have gone through everything I've owned from the closet to the kitchen. Now my other half total hoarder from groceries to clothing. However, seeing me donate to families that have gone without and need a little help it has inspired him to start going through some of his stuff. We love your family. Keep up the great work you'll feel much better when it's all done.

Girl thank you!!! all you are doing is showing us what a typical home looks like no joke, you are keeping it real !! I find that when i get home from work im already frustrated knowing there is a mess to be picked up, clothes to put away, then i need to look for something and pantry / cabinets / closets look like they belong to satan with all the crap everywhere😂😂all because i have so much clutter. I wouldnt feel that way if I just decided to declutter. thats it i am off work the next 3 days You have motivated me to clean up my mess and donate donate DONATE!! i just watched 4-5 maybe more of your decluttering videos, and I have now found out decision fatigue IS a thing. I kept giving up or not even trying to clean / declutter because i couldnt part with anything and I was also raised to not be wasteful or i would think about how much i may have spent on certain stuff. 👏🏻 When me and my husband were starting out we took one week a month off from shopping. Usually around the first when bills were due. Now once every 2 to 3 months we do it to "use what we have" and it gives me a chance to clean out the pantry and fridge. I have to get creative with meals but it's kind of fun and definitely saves us from wasting and spending money.

When I volunteered at the food bank I learned that people misconstrue ‘expiration dates’...the date starts from the day you open the product. Canned foods never expire as long as they stay open. Unless it was something you opened and never used, it probably could’ve gone to the food bank. But I understand and appreciate your transparency bc it’s hard to admit/show when we make mistakes, especially on such a large platform. Kudos to you guys!

@MimiKeel

This week I used canned cream of mushroom soup and tuna that "expired" in 2015. We're still alive. As long as the cans are kept in a cool, dry area and aren't rusted or damaged in any way, they're good for 3 to 4 years after the expiration/best buy date, IMO.

I was a hard core coupon user which caused me to be super organized when it came to pantry storage. What I did was date every can/package before it went into the pantry/freezer and when I used the last can/package I'd make a mental note (or write it down) how long it took me to use my stockpile of say green beans, so I knew I'd use 8 cans of green beans in six months and it was a safe bet I'd use 16 cans a year, so when the Thanksgiving's sales started I'd buy 16 cans of green beans and I knew that was a year's supply. I did that with everything with a long shelf life. Chips, popcorn, juice were on my regular shopping list and I'd buy a month's worth if it went on sale. Meat, fresh vegetables, milk, bread, tortillas, and eggs were always on my weekly grocery list because of their short lifespan. I clean my pantry often, but I'm OCD about my pantry. As for kitchen cabinets and drawers, after I clean my kitchen in the evening I pick one drawer or one shelf in a cabinet and empty it, wipe it out, declutter if necessary, and reload. If you do just one drawer or one cabinet a day you will never have to empty the entire contents of your kitchen cabinets and drawers again.

I did this same thing a few years back and I was so mad and ashamed of myself. I threw away a yard sized trash bag of food that I let expire. Ever since then I no longer stock pile and I have drastically changed how I grocery shop. I meal plan now and I go every 2 weeks to the grocery store. When I meal plan I do an inventory of my fridge, freezer, and pantry and I plan my meals around what I need to use up. Ever since going to meal planning and holding myself to using what I have and paying attention to product dates I have not had to throw anything away. Good luck with your decluttering journey, you are doing amazing!!!! So glad you have a great support system with your hubby having your back!!!

Way to go hubby for helping out!! 👍🏾 I grocery shop once a week and buy what I need to make that weeks meals. This helps me not overstock and ultimately end up throwing expired things away. By the end of the week, there’s not much left in the fridge and freezer other than basic staples and then it’s time to buy again. If there’s something that we didn’t cook or eat, then it gets moved to the next weeks meals. I also try to plan my meals around what we have.

👍to the husband for helping. Every two months go through the freezer and clean out. For the pantry go through it before you go grocery shopping this will eliminate over buying. Clean out the pantry every 2/3 months. Make a day of it clean the refrigerator and pantry at the same time. I had to learn to do this and be diligent. After throwing away food (money).

Botulism needs air so as long as the can us properly sealed chances are you are good. It also creates gasses so if it gets in there and infects a sealed can somehow it will bulge the can.
@camillewinnie27
@camillewinnie27 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly, expiration dates are legal requirements for manufactures they have nothing to do with the actual date something spoils. You need to use your own best judgment and not just throw things away because of an arbitrary date set by government regulations. Canned goods last way longer than their expiration dates. Botulism is only a concern if something has a broken seal. It just doesn’t start to grow in a can because it’s past the date. Keep in mind those are arbitrary guidelines set for consistency and potential liability. They really don’t really know when food goes bad. Your own eyes , nose and taste is your best indicator. Dry goods that are stored in boxes can just go stale. But it isn’t gonna hurt you to eat it. Once again your own taste and preferences should be your guide. Buying huge quantities of packaged goods is generally a good idea to avoid and just buy what you need in a little extra and keep rotating. I think we’re all guilty of just adding more things to the pantry without really looking at what we already have.

What's been helping me lately is taking actual inventory of our food, like on paper! I've actually only done it for our two freezers so far, but it's really made a difference seeing things written down. Sometimes we see things with our eyes, but don't really see them, if that makes sense!? Like we're so used to seeing this jumble of food, we don't realize how much it actually is. Anyway, I think I might take on-paper inventory of my pantry next. I've been crossing stuff off my freezer lists as they're being used, and it's been really helpful. Checking the list regularly also reminds me not to buy repeats at the store (can't see it because it's buried in the freezer, but my list says it's there!). :)

Maybe try the monthly calendar meal plan and only buy what those meals include and I always buy ingredients for about 6 meals for backup if I can't get to the store due to being busy or weather. I make a weekly list for fresh produce but its saved us tons of money because of no waste. Maybe the extra bins on Sundays load up each bin with a nightly meal and label Monday, Tuesday etc. So you grab each night you know what's for dinner.

To be honest, the best way I’ve gotten out of that routine has been finding a good organizing system. I’ve also made sure to find a specific place to put things that need to be added to a grocery list. That way, rather than just buying blindly, I try to go in with a specific knowledge of what I need. PS. It looks amazing after!! Woah!!

I recently purged my pantry and now try to keep 2 to 4 of the items we use most (except the canned goods I buy at Costco in bulk) and as I use them I add them to my grocery list to replenish. Got so tired of running to the store because I didn't have what I needed. Going to try to clean it out every 3-4 months but have to be diligent keeping it organized in between cleaning. Kids are grown and on their own so it's much easier for me. Also cleaned out my freezer which was a total mess. Now I can see what I have in there also. Thanks for sharing.

Wow, great job on that MASSIVE undertaking!! I'm on an improvement kick myself. Last year from August 24th 2017 through to today I can proudly sat that I've lost 70 lbs & am down to my HS weight (I graduated HS 30 years ago) & am back to a size small, woo hoo!! Now I've turned my attention on to my insanely cluttered home shared by my husband & 2 of my 4 college age children. 2 have graduated college but are now living on their own but a good deal of their crap remains... For now :-) I was stressed when I started out but instead of letting the magnitude of the individual jobs overwhelm me especially when thinking of how far I had to go, I created a checklist on my notepad app by room than broke my list down to smaller more manageable tasks within each room (for example KITCHEN: utensil drawer, spice cabinet, Tupperware cabinet, corner area - hidden behind extra kitchen chairs, etc) I literally listed every drawer, cabinet & "sneaky little hidey hole" & that list ended up being being 67 "organizational projects" long with the bigger projects broken down into sections 😵. I'm about halfway through (36 projects completed & reorganized 🎉) My goal is to get through 1 project a day or spend at least 15 minutes getting rid of 15 things if I can't get through an entire project. During crazy times, I've been shooting for 4 projects a week. I have 31 areas (projects) left to organize & fingers crossed I stay as motivated as I have been with my weight loss. So thanks for posting your video. It honestly helps to see other success stories which truly help me to keep going.

My sister and I had a real problem with food waste for a long time because we were purchasing almost all bulk items. We made the decision to stop grocery shopping without doing the following: 1) Meal plan for the week, every week, no exceptions 2) Make a list of only the items we need for this weeks meal plans 3) At least one week a month we "shop" our pantry and freezer, no additional purchases unless small and immediately consumable for that week. This has made a huge difference in the amount of food we purchase and lessened the frequency of purchasing items we have on had.

I loved watching your video, It is so recognizable! How I keep my pantry, freezer,... organized: I made lists from all the food I have in my house. A huuuuuge job but at the end it saves me a lot of time and money. On Sundays I meal plan for the next week, starting from the meat and vegetables I have in stock, what is on sale and look up recipes. I make a grocery list for the items I need, do my shopping on Mondays - before I went almost every day - and buy only what's on that list. When I'm out of something, I don't go shopping for it, I just buy it next Monday. I think that the most expansive item in a recipe is the meat, so I only buy meat when it is on sale and put it in the freezer or use it immediately.I don't buy a product just because it is on sale, but only when I know I'm going to use it in a short time. I always have flour, rice, vinegar, oils, dried herbs, sugar,,...in stock, but only 1 package of each, and when I'm out I put it on my grocery list when I need it in a recipe. When I use something, I delete it and when I buy something I add it to the lists. I started this in July because I started budgeting and it is working for me. My native language isn't English so sorry for the mistakes.

So..I have to meal plan and use up what I have and then go get what I need to make it to the next grocery trip. I love it so much better. I know exactly what I have and what I don't. The transition was hard and frustrating because I can't stock up during sales. However I don't have so much to dig thru trying to see what I have. Life is so much better when your organized! I love watching your journey! You have great ideas!

You kept it all the way real. Thanks for your honesty. You cleaned it up!!! I usually meal plan and shop online - this keeps me from overspending. I try to stay out of Costco because I tend to get more than I need. Usually shopping for the week all we get is produce. If we are out of rice and have pasta our meals will revolve around pasta. When that’s all used up then we purchase more. I used to have the mindset of wanting to see a full pantry and fridge but throwing out food means dollars wasted 💸💸 I don’t do that anymore.

Really wonderful video - so honest and such a great job!! All of your hard work really paid off - hoping you'll do a update for using up your pantry and freezer items! You have a gorgeous home! Your pantry is huge! You could almost fit another shelf at the top of the cupboard plus add rolling shelf or stacked baskets for items at the bottom too! Love your new snack center for the kids - Brillant idea!

Great job Gia and hubby! I need to clean my pantry out and reorganize. I don't have a big pantry, so I don't have near the amount of stuff, but it still doesn't stay organized. Need to do my spice cabinet even worse. Would love to see a video on this please!

I don’t stockpile anymore. So much expired food that was thrown away when I got tired of my clutter and tackled it. I meal plan for two weeks and just buy what is needed. In the rare instance I forget something, there’s plenty of stores near me, where I can go in and out just for one item. You did a fantastic job! Your declutter content is so inspiring.

Once a week we do a cupboard/leftover day. We make meals/snacks with what we have opened in the fridge/cupboard and we use up the leftovers.

When it comes to stockpiling food items in your pantry organization is a must. I really don’t stockpile anymore because our family has grown and left the nest for the most part, but when I did the most important thing was to make sure to put the food closest to expiring to the front. Always check your dates each time you bring new food into the pantry and insert them according to date. It also helps you know what you need to be using up or donating to a food pantry before it goes bad. Better that someone else can eat it instead of going in the garbage.

Learn to tell yourself NO to deals if you know you already have lots. Even when it's a good deal. It hurts to walk away from a steal of a deal, but if you already have 10 packages of pasta, do you really need more at 25 cents each? Consider buying some products in smaller quantities at the grocery store vs Costco. Shop your pantry. Try to make meals with things you already have & don't need to go shopping for extras. Canned goods I try to only keep a max of 4 of a kind on hand at a time. (Tomatoes are the exception since I use them in so many different dishes.) First in, first out. And periodically check the dates. If I know I've got 2 jars of spaghetti sauce with 2 months left on the best before date, I make regular spaghetti & a version of spaghetti that freezes well. If you don't expect to use an item before the date, donate it to someone who can. For the reusable bags, I store them in the car. They will never get used if I kept them in the pantry. I forget them in the car half the time, but I can always run back to the car, or if only getting 1-2 items carry them to the car to bag vs using plastic.

A few other thoughts...are the bins actually helping? Or are they hiding what you have causing you to buy extras of what you already have? I also try to keep stuff in original packaging so I can easily find the best bye date. I don't change what goes in the pantry much so everything always goes back in the same spot. I can be out & someone call me to ask where I keep the liquid smoke or spare bbq sauce & I can tell them straight away. (And I get super anal & put stuff back in its spot when I'm in the pantry if it's not in its spot.) And I do occasionally have food go past it's best bye date. Life happens & a specific meal just keeps being pushed.

Great video! Thank you for showing how this really looks in a real home. I always laugh when I see organizing videos of houses that are already organized. For me, when I started meal planning based on what I have on hand I found that I save much more money on groceries and I save time. I make my grocery list by going through my pantry, fridge and freezer first so I don't buy things I already have.

Whats with the cop flashlight in the snack cabinet lol😉 im in the middle of organizing my pantry. A coat of paint gives it a fresh look and so excited to start organizing in the morning! One thing that I've found out is to have basket where you can put things in that are about to expire or just new to be eaten and then when you go in the pantry you have it all right there instead of scattered about. Then when you find it its already expired😢 good luck with the organized pantry and 👍 to your husband for helping!!! A real man helps in the kitchen😉

You’re amazing!!! We used to throw away food too. When I quit my job it “forced” us to actually eat what we had and not waste as much. Now the pantry goes almost on “E” before I restock. (Not by choice 🤷🏾‍♀️) I think also if you got clear plastic bins (look up fridge organizers on Amazon) and take the food out of the boxes, store the dry goods in a container and it’ll last longer. You also can see what you actually have. It made my pantry life so much better!

So proud of you girl! When I looked at your pantry I felt so overwhelmed that I probably would have walked away and given up. I get like that often when I look at a big area that has a lot going on that needs to be tackled. I really have trouble with feeling overwhelmed when I look at the space and there’s too much clutter to be cleaned out and purged. I have been on the same kick you as far as wanting to purge and clean out through my entire house. I did my pantry not that long ago and had the same problem as you had when you did yours, I had a lot of things that expired that I didn’t use and had to throw away and I feel you on the need to be better with cooking what’s in your pantry. I am trying so hard to be better. Thank you for your videos they always encourage me.

one of the greatest tips I got was to make an inventory list of what's in my freezer and pantry and every time I use something, cross it off my list. I use a laminated sheet so I can just wipe off the number.

First, I love your channel! I see you working and struggling with the same things I am and you motivate me to get it done! The best thing to happen to me is moving into a 1959 house with a 1959 kitchen. There is limited space everywhere, but especially The pantry. My pantry is so small and only had about 3 shelves I could use for food. I can only keep about a week or two of dinner sides and school lunch stuff (bread, chips, juice boxes, snacks, etc) before it is too full and the shelves are sagging under the weight. It taught me to meal plan, use up what we had, and stick to my grocery list, but also stopping a lot of food waste. I think having less in your pantry will help with stress and it getting out of control. Everything will have a place because there will be space.

To relieve myself fromdesicion fatigue I do one shelf at a time. Top to bottom. The middle shelves are always the hardest. This is true throughout the house. If I completely empty and clean one shelf at a time it keeps me motivated cause I see the progress made almost instantly. Also when cleaning baseboards I just have a bowl of hot soapy water and go at it.

When you go grocery shopping first go through your pantry and snack cabinet to see what's still 'in stock' so you can make a list of what you need to buy. That works for me hope it 'll work for you too. Nice job btw👍👍

Girl I so used to be you! I would get sooooo mad at myself for food going bad but then I would go right back to buying more crap. Finally I figured out a system that works for us. I went to ikea and bought white storage containers with lids ( I can’t remember the name of them ) I labeled each one into categories and if it won’t fit I don’t buy it, that simple. I use to use the dollar store containers but they truly aren’t large enough so it was always overflowing things didn’t get rotated so I just invested in ikea storage and it truly has saved us a ton of money. The other thing I did was for my can foods that we eat a ton of like green beans and rotel I bough from Walmart pop can dispensers that way they always got rotated and it hold like 12 cans no more. The other thing I do now since everything is organized and I can see exactly what I have I make my grocery list then go to my pantry, fridge, and freezer and mark off what I don’t need bc if it doesn’t fit I don’t buy it. This has been life changing for us bc serious I think I was probably wasting $1000 a year or more on food, crazy.

This is my first video to ever watch of yours and first off you are so sweet and I definitely enjoy you! Secondly, I have a family of 5 and I used to do the same thing ALL THE TIME!! I would spend well over $1,000/month on groceries and end up throwing so much away! I've been super focused on getting better at this and not wasting ANY resources and I've learned so much and my grocery bill has been cut by 40% and we no longer throw food away. I don't say that as a prideful statement I'm just saying if I can do it SO CAN YOU!! So happy for you to see the waste and make changes, it's definitely hard to get used to shopping your own kitchen before heading to the store but you can absolutely do it!! I'm excited for you and your family and hope you find the journey as fulfilling as I have! Have a great day!

I love how the music says, "You got to let it go." PERFECT song for cleaning & decluttering! Re Paper Products: If you don't use them often, I'd put them on the top shelf of your pantry. They're lightweight, and would free up more floor space. I've always tried to keep my most-used stuff at eye-level and within easy reach, and my lesser-used stuff on a high shelf. Just my thoughts. Your pantry looks great!
