You're wrong to say that this is the only place in the world where this happens. I live in a cave in the South of Spain with a ten-foot thick rock roof and metre-thick walls. There are literally tens of thousands of caves in the Granada/Jaen area of Andalucia. There are cave bars, restaurants and hotels. Also in Turkey they have entire cities underground. My cave cost me about the same as a new car would and I don't pay any air conditioning bills and hardly anything for heating.

Yes you can sell it just like any ordinary house. I have a dugout on the market now. I miss it so much, When you buy you then own the property. Check it out. Worth getting your hands on one now especially with the oil exploration going on,. Some people are also still building them. You just buy the land.

An excellent idea for abandoned mines, and not just for extreme heat. Montreal has a large underground mall to escape the cold. The surface might be left to nature.

@adeleweiss81306 жыл бұрын
Most do have windows at the front next to the entrance. I don't know what this guy is talking about. Mine had a kitchen window and a small window in the laundry by the 'back door', which was adjacent to the front door. There aren't generally any windows in the bedrooms, which takes some getting used to, but it's great for sleeping in - no light and no noise.

Where does a water supply come from?
@adeleweiss81306 жыл бұрын
A huge amount of the Outback sits on the Great Artesian Basin - the largest underground 'sea' in the world. They say much of central Australia was once covered by the ocean which gradually sank into underground caverns. Aquatic 'dinosaur' bones have been found out there and I myself have picked up fossilised seashells. They use bores to pump it to the surface and then it's purified in the local desalination plant. Water is therefore quite expensive in Coober Pedy, compared to other places in Australia.

The thing is, why would you want to bomb Coober Pedy, Australia, when you can bomb somewhere in the USA with likely 100x the population density? Just saying, if you were inclined to bomb something you'd probably be the type of person looking to get the maximum carnage, and Coober Pedy ain't it. Also, if earthquakes were a problem in that locale you'd think they'd have gone above ground decades ago.

Not very common, when they happen they're not very intense and im sure the town has emergency evacuation routes planned. Bigger risk is flooding
@DarkenedYeastExtract6 жыл бұрын
Australia is rare to have earthquakes as we're in the middle of a tectonic plate (and general historic data). Flooding isn't generally an issue in Cooper Pedy as it is an arid zone/desert though flooding is a greater issue in the temperate and tropical areas of the country/continent. The biggest risk would be fire but to my knowledge the town planning and design of the place manages all of that as it is a low population town with noteworthy tourist traffic.

Well, you do, apparantly we tend to get more than other middle-of-the-continental-shelf locations around the world, but they're so small they rarely get noticed. I remember back about 2011 or so we got a ~2 or so earthquake in SE South Australia in the early hours of the morning and people in Adelaide on social media were like 'OMG!!! EARTHQUAAAAAKE!!!!', whereas Kiwis, who had just suffered a pretty disastrous earthquake and aftershocks in Christchurch in recent months were going 'only a 2 ... wtf you wimps?' and 'this is insulting ... our place gets leveled and you're freaking out over a 2!?' The joy of living in the middle of a continental shelf with no volcanic activity, I suppose ; )
