I was astounded to come across this video! I am a 73 year old Catholic religious brother living in Nairobi and as a way of forcing my self to read a bit "actively" I recently finished going through "Fratelli Tutti", an encyclical of Pope Francis published last October, using vim to give a heading to each and every paragraph in order to force me to read attentively! It has 288 footnotes! I had finished reading it but I was planning when I got a bit of free time (I'm not quite retired) to do EXACTLY what you showed in the video! Thanks

One improvement you might not have known: the back-tick (`) moves the cursor to a mark, while a single quote (') moves the cursor to "the beginning of the line containing the mark". So you could have avoided an extra search: ``ca(\footnote{} instead of ''\()la\footnote I only discovered that recently after over a decade of using vim.

Spotted mistake at 5:25. Some footnotes contained parenthesis, so F ) would bring you to the one in the footnote, not the one you wanted to delete. You probably noticed it but decided not to redo the video cause you don't care. What a chad.

How is doing this in vim any better than doing it in python (or any other programming language)? I'm not saying there aren't any benefits, I'm truly curious if there are. It seems like if you spent the same amount of time learning the basics of any scripting language rather than learning vim you would be able to do it that way and writing the script would take about as much time as doing the macro (without the explanations - so shorter than in the video). But with a scripting language you get extra benefits. In general it is more useful to know a programming language rather than a text editor. You would be able to do even more sophisticated text editing (even though vim macros are powerful enough for almost anything). The script would also execute faster and could work in a reasonable amount of time on larger documents (compared to vim macros even if you set the lazyredraw option). You could also use your programming language knowledge to do other things, not just text editing. If you're good at both vim and a scripting language I don't see any good reason for using vim rather than a script.

I find it much better to work with raw html if I'm going to do similar things with content off the internet. I also tend to use the `:global` command instead of macros: past runs are kept in your command history, and it's much easier to edit failed attempts (especially with `q:`).
